There is a lack of motivation in this war, that much is evident. As Verly has said though, there are a few reasons why the progress has been a little sluggish.

I think one of them is that the stakes are quite different. Rather than saving a town from invasion or a lovable NPC from danger, we find ourselves crawling through the interior of a being we know very little about, in exchange for answers to some questions that only a portion of the community have been discussing and pondering over the last year or so.

I will admit to being one of those not seeing what is on the line for this war (thereby my wave count is miserable). However, with the new 40% cutscene I think this war ties back to the main storyline of Book 3, effectively upping the stakes.

BluuHorseOfficial -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 9:39:08)

quote:

A couple of things I want to address-

First of all, this war was proceeding slowly for a variety of reasons from the very start. It is also intended to be a two week war, compared to a war that completes in one week that is intended to be completed in one week.

Second, we're trying something new. Obviously that doesn't always go well, but the great thing about this being an online game is that we can learn, adapt, and make changes as needed.

For example, this war has no visible unlockables. Percent unlockables are a huge incentive and mini goal for the community. However, by having them hidden in this war, it's demotivating to just see plain war waves for the rest of the war.
Obviously, given the 20% quest, there are unlockables to come, but we need to and will adjust things in the following days. I will say, the next unlock is at 50%.

Was the puzzle too hard? Perhaps. However, it was intended to have players work together to figure things out. Maybe it was too difficult to start things off with. It was something different that we tried and we learned from it.

Third, this isn't a filler event.

Finally, there's been a lot of good feedback, and we're always looking to improve. This is some old, old tech and gamestyle. Some things we change for the better, but much is still a remnant of the past. There's a lot that we would like to try, as we have here. But these changes take time, and we ask that you please be understanding when some things either don't hit the mark at first, or are just outright not good. That doesn't mean to stop giving feedback, both good and bad. Without feedback, it can be difficult to judge what works and what doesn't.

None of this should be taken as excuses- this war clearly isn't doing as well as any of us would have hoped.

But, I sincerely believe that as it progresses, it will be very satisfying for most players. There's still a lot left to uncover.
Verlyrus, please don't be discouraged by how this war is turning out. I wanted to bring it to your attention that a lot of us do think that the efforts you and Dove put into this war and the last really are paying off. The bait-and-switch from the previous war and the concept of a 300% meter as well as the milestone Lock system of the current war are innovative and creative that were never before seen in wars since the creation of DF--it was amazing to see the community come together encouraged by the Remthalas takeover and by the First Lock, coming together and pitching in ideas until it was finally figured out. This is remarkable as this has never been seen before in DragonFable. As you said, it was intended to make players come together and figure it out and it worked! Despite not knowing binary, I found that night on discord to be really fun.

I only really have one concern with the locking system; and it's moreso just a suggestion that would probably help smooth things along: the Locks preventing players from warring can be really annoying as wars are usually viewed as grindy events wherein the player kills footwaves on end to contribute to the war effort. Sadly, locking off the war behind a complex puzzle that can only be comprehended by someone with knowledge in binary can be a bit of a letdown. Sure, you can brute force it, but cycling through 24 combinations takes away a considerable amount of time from warring. I agree that it makes perfect sense--how would the player clear paths if a locked door blocks them--but it does act like a bit of a bummer and slows down the individual/community WPM. I love the concept of these locks and in my opinion, I think it would be more feasible to lock the story progression behind the locks, but not the actual war waves.

Otherwise, I would not say that this is a flop war in any way. It's an amazing war and has really brought the community together over the past week, though a lot of factors have built up against it to kinda make it look that way--such as the inaccessibility of the Leftovers quest (now fixed) and the war button saying 'To ???' as opposed to 'To War' leading people to not exactly know that this is a war unless they read the DNs. But this war is amazingly innovative in its own way and the atmosphere gives a totally different feel to this war that makes it stands out from any other war I've played over the course of my DF playthrough, dare I say even surpassing Black Winter and Mr. Nameless/Remthalas wars and I've never been this excited about just a video game event before. Please don't think of this as a flop war or a failure in any way, you guys constantly put so much effort into the game and it hurts to know that you think of it this way.

I'm really interested for what this event has to unfold as I've practically been in love with Lock and Key ever since Leftovers and I've always wanted to see more additions to their storyline.

anime_rpg -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 9:41:08)

Hmm, two strange things. I am not seeing anything for 40%, also Veryly said the next lock was at 50%?

Edit: BluuHorseOfficial makes a very good point, I forgot about the last war, that bait and switch was brilliant! Though I do disagree (I think, maybe not fully decided) about the point on the locks, I think not being able to progress with the war count is part of the point but just that they should take the slow down in wpm into account when working out the total number of waves. More on that and other parise for Verly and Tomix/Dove in my last post.

kuanwu -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 9:54:36)

Same here. I just logged in after seeing your post but didn't see anything. I think the next one is at 50%.

Also, I think the new puzzle aspect is great. It will draw in a whole bunch of guys who like puzzles, and it is not too overwhelming, the main warring aspect is still there, and even you fail at puzzles you can solve it by trial and error. Personally I prefer harder puzzles, even obscure ones, because given a large enough community someone is going to have the knowledge or IQ to solve it, so it forces us to work together, and that one way to maintain the liveliness of a community.

And it is definitely good to try new things, and see if it is something the community would like. Now that the virus is going around, im sure those people staying at home and suddenly remembering this dragonfable game is going to be a fresh group of test subjects =)

Alpha Centipede -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 9:57:38)

@anime_rpg and @kuanwu: When we just hit 40%, there was a lock which played the Sinnocence war intro scene for some reason, and the lock refused to go away until the cache was cleared. The (actual) next one is at 50%.

anime_rpg -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 10:03:28)

Yeah, just checked the AE Discord and someone thought maybe they originally planed 4 puzzles but due to some negative feedback (I say some as there is some positive as well) they might have changed it to only 3 puzzles. If that is the case I hope they release the 4th puzzle as an additional optional one or something, maybe even putting it at 100% (that will motivate people to solve it [;)]).

yjjoel26 -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 13:17:50)

I kinda of enjoying this speed, like I get to grind at my own pace and not feeling rushed. I ended up doing more waves then I normally would (though still not as much as the war mongers does) =X

FYI I spilt my screen into 3, so I can do my grinding on one of them (usually I open 2 screen, so it a hassle to go to DF screen and farm waves after waves)

scifijimmy -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 13:25:19)

yjjoel26, while I can't argue that its nice to get more wave for this war. Usually by this point we are done because of some timer that if we don't beat bad things happen. Serenity in our hearts.[;)]

Dray -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 13:57:22)

Ooh, we have milestones now! Far more than I thought there would be, too. Six? I was expecting two more, maximum. I think that was a very smart addition. Props to the devs, and their flexibility. Looking forward to seeing how this pans out! Maybe because it's taking a bit longer than expected, I'll have time to get to 10001 again...?

anime_rpg -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 14:02:06)

Ooh Dray, nice. Though I think you are right that it is 2, maybe 3 more locks, but then the other 2 are cutscenes or something special (hover over if you didn't realise. I think this will help people speed up as we approach some of them.

anime_rpg -> RE: =DF= To War! Archive E-189-L (3/28/2020 21:05:34)

Hmm, not sure. I would say to clear your cache, but you probably wouldn't be able to see the 50% one then as well. I can see icons like the marker for where we are at 50%, 60%, 75%, 85% and 100%. Interesting there are now also two buttons above Explore (which I don't think were there earlier when the icons appeared), which may relate to 60% and 85% as they have descriptions and don't mention locks, or they may be something else, currently just say <Data Corrupted>.

I'm off to bed now, especially with the time just jumping to 2am (I am Doom Epoch at the moment ...). But was the next lock supposed to be 40%, I thought that was just what was predicted? Although, to be fair people did have a caching problem at 40% with a Sinnocence cutscene, so I guess we could take it from that that it was supposed to be 40%v and then re-jigged?

What's so different with this war compared to the past ones? I personally see a maze which you walk in and see on your map the progress, and some puzzle with no reward, the rest it's just like in a regular war.
It could be a good idea to actually make some challenges across the way, and reward with some items, or some pieces of something that can be used at the end to turn in for a powerful item (sword, armor, necklace, etc).
