PD -> RE: Is Ancient Mother Staff's Art Really Appropriate for AQ? (5/11/2021 0:55:59)

A more moderate opinion if I may.

As Cray notes there's a reasonable debate on classifying what has artistic/social value and the obscene. Courts, judges, policemen and the like regularly have to make that kind of judgement call and it usually does come with significant consequences. There are reasons that obscenity laws exist so far as to protect the public from things that may cause legitimate harm and/or negatively affect life. Now as far as the statue artwork goes as you can tell most people here have not taken it to be obscene because most of us seem to at least understand that the art is reference to a historical/cultural piece rather than there to oogle a (Most researchers theorize these things represent a variety of things). That being said if one didn't have a background and reacted badly it is of course to be expected. Yet however minor the concern is we probably should at least take the time to hear them out fairly.

Intent and context is important when having these kinds of debates. The description at least says it's meant to represent motherly love (which is actually a theory of what these figures represent) and not to be an attractive piece. Overall I would say given the original intent of the staff and the community reaction, whom this art was deemed not obscene in this case.

Just as a segway on thinking about general accessibility and appropriateness, I do think the community should overall think about other elements of the game more critically. Certainly art isn't the only thing that's worthy of being thought of in the same lense. Like Cray has alluded to, quests, dialogue, animations, and everything in-between should really be looked at under a big microscrope especially if we want to make the game more open and playable.

^Like many other posters say, there are a bunch of other controversial subjects and suggestive art AQ have in their games. To me, its more like a question of "why are you complaining now? the game(s) always been like this". If other stuff (and similar stuff, like the already-mentioned Ragnarok and the Paxia statues) get a pass without complaint, then why can't this?
Nobody complained about quests about genocide, xenophobia, suicide, and so on. But when it's about a real life statue celebrating motherhood, some people get up in all arms. Somehow, nudity (and its not even explicit/pornography) is worse than those subjects because...? While ignoring every other cases of nudity also because...?

Also, AQ, if we put it under the ESRB rating, would be rated T because it lets you know you need to be over 13 and older on making accounts. Even back in 2002. It's not for kids and teens by that age know what anatomy, intent, and context is.

Everybody has anatomy of all shapes and sizes, the item is based off a real life statue celebrating motherhood and even shows up in school books, the context of the description even points to motherhood, its a very niche item, changing it will defeat the purpose of art itself, and "think of the children" does not work since the game isn't aimed for children anyway.

EDT: forgot to mention:
1. The poster also went "that people should reevaluate the appropriateness of past items instead of using them as justification for new items"; its not fair to change the past-as in the history of the game- just because of one single fictional item that someone complained about. It may help a few people, but hurts many more. It's a selfish line of thinking.
2. Comparing a fully-body statue to a male genitalia is not the same. Motherhood and Fatherhood traits are vastly different. Like I said in a previous post, fertility is not just about child-bearing.
3. "I do not want to see naked statues/people" while ignoring that public museum naked statues also exists, Michelangelo's David and the various Venus statues that show Aphrodite as somewhat plump and with revealing breasts/without clothes are the biggest popular examples and all over the world.

Interesting discussion, I really appreciate everyone that remained civil.

I made some slight adjustments to the chest area of the Ancient Mother's Staff so it isn't quite so defined.
