Rafiq von den Vielen -> Mage questions. (12/11/2024 5:57:22)

Some of these questions may be dumb but I'll be honest: I hardly ever played mages in my life [:D]

So I decided to start raising up another character of mine who has a bunch of older frostval items (used to just use him as a giftbox mule). I've decided to try an INT/CHA/LUK spellcaster lean... caster. Now I do have a few questions though and those are as follows:

.) What's the easiest element to skip on a spell boosting staff for? I will probably have to skip one unless there's an omniboosting weapon I can't think of right now (Sila's is probably way outclassed these days).
.) Is there something as a preferred inventory split between guests and damaging/utility spells? (Siphon for example which this character has. He also has double poelala ofc.)
.) Onto guests and pets some more... which are the easiest elements to skip there? I know Necromancer does a whole lotta things in that regard but... I never really used that either so I'm not sure what elements all those summons can be.

Thanks for any insight.

  • Correct; Sila's Staff is outclassed these days. Regarding an element to skip, I'd go with the elemental opposite of whatever is encountered least e.g., Water, since Energy monsters are relatively rare. Even if you can find one, other elements can cover you (NB: With Water, you may want to consider Healing Branch given its Healing/Water compression).
  • Not really? Beastmages definitely have a case of 8 slot syndrome given Guests and Spells typically use the same slots. Necromancer is a good option given that it compresses 6 Guests into an armour slot. You can also consider compression spells like Destruction Burst/Fires of Desolation (though admittedly a number of these are $35 Package items...).
  • Same basic idea; If you're going to forego an element, make sure it applies to the one you encounter least.

    Hmm... I see. (I actually have two of those package spells: The Earth/Light one and the Ice/Wind one (which I probably won't be using because of Big Dictionary and the Ice Necro cavalry I bought with a spare UR).

    So if I compress some more spells into caster armors (such as the Spring Dryad when that returns or Dark Caster) and staves such as Branch, would this work:

    Poelala
    Pridelord
    Gandolphin
    Siphon
    AMR/Void Dragon Ambush (or whatever the INT version is)
    D-Burst
    C-Burst
    and another guest I'll figure out after I get Necro?

    Thanks for the input though. Appreciate that as mages just aren't my territory yet.

    CH4OT1C! -> RE: Mage questions. (12/11/2024 14:25:51)

    Yes; most of those choices would work fine. I wouldn't worry about harm (AMR/Void Dragon Ambush), as it's rarely the most useful element. Moreover, due to the stat revamp, Mages gained the 'wallbreaker' ability with their spells to deal additional damage. Gandolphin isn't strictly necessary if you plan on using Insightful Armour of Awe, which has an inbuilt mana shield (though Gandolphin does have other advantages...).

    Rafiq von den Vielen -> RE: Mage questions. (12/11/2024 16:49:54)

    I just like having a source of Harm damage available. Furthermore I didn't realize that the stat revamp gave that to mages so maybe it's actually not that necessary. I'll play some more and figure out if I really want AMR (and if I don't need it I can store it too so nothing really lost).

    As for Gandolphin: I like the Shield. And with multiple ways to easily regen mana (pixel ether + essence orb above everything else. Could even try to fit Infinita Staff in somehow.) it should be easy to put up and maintain.

    CH4OT1C! -> RE: Mage questions. (12/11/2024 17:54:49)

    Regarding Gandolphin: Absolutely, it's not difficult to maintain. I only raised it because there's an easy alternative compressed into a no-drop slot in Insightful AoA. If you're suffering from 8-slot syndrome, then it's something to consider.
