Frostval (Chapter 20)

A Cold Open

Narrator: On a sleepy Winter's night, our Hero and <his/her/their> Dragon admire the stars.

Narrator: The view would look even better from a roof, but the Hero didn't have the heart to disturb <his/her/their> little buddy.

Narrator: The constellations glittered, spanning endlessly across the horizon.
Narrator: If only our Hero could trace them without going cross-eyed.

Narrator: But, <he/she/they> got lucky. Shifting <his/her/their> view a little to the left, <he/she/they>'d find—

Narrator: —<he/she/they>'d find a spectacular asterism. The star known as Maia was... it's there. It has to be there.

Narrator: This was a strange yet harmless anomaly. The stars came back.
Narrator: I said… the stars came back.

Narrator: The stars came back. There was nothing wrong.
Narrator (angry): There was nothing wrong!

Narrator: Run.

Narrator: The Hero grabbed <his/her/their> Dragon and ran!

Narrator: Take <Dragon> and get out of here!

Narrator: An entity from the beyond set his sights on Lore.
Narrator: His destiny.
Narrator: Nothing could stop him...
Narrator: Stars went dark. Planets turned to dust. A merciless frost froze the deep void.
Narrator: Our Hero miraculously escaped the impact untouched, and so did <his/her/their> Dragon.
Narrator: ...And so did <his/her/their>Dragon! Come on!

Narrator: He is here.

Narrator: The cold is climbing up <his/her/their> legs. If our Hero doesn't take <Dragon> and run, he will find them.

Narrator: I can stop his clock to buy some time, but not for long.

Narrator: ...Kezeroth.
Narrator: The end of the world.

Narrator: I know this isn't the path the Hero would usually take to get to Falconreach, but <he/she/they> needs to move quickly.

Narrator: The fog covers the Hero's escape. I can at least do that.

Narrator: Queen Victoria and her city are petrified, but they aren't dead. There's still hope.

Narrator: The Swordhaven I knew was on fire for years, and everything was fine! Really!

Narrator: The oceans are beginning to freeze over…snow blankets the deserts...
Narrator: Why… why is he here? This isn't your fight. It's supposed to be mi—

Narrator: Th-the Hero crept away quietly, careful to silence <his/her/their> footsteps.

Narrator: Kezeroth, the World Ender. A Glaceran from beyond the stars who exists for the sake of destruction.

Narrator: He already froze half of Lore with his presence alone, but now the Hero is joined by Aria and Artix.

Narrator: With the Champions of Darkness and Nature, our Hero can stand up to the—

Narrator: Wait. So neither of them… Do Champions not exist here?

Narrator: Okay. Alright. Not a big deal. We still have options. They decided to find Warlic!

Narrator: Haha... Is Tara around? No? Er, how about the Shadowscythe? They're pretty reliable.

Narrator: I'm not a worm! I mean – don't mind me! Just…trust the process.

Narrator: Yeah, I totally get it. Wow, this usually happens the other way around.
Narrator: ...No. The fire! The fire goes dark!

Narrator: The fire went out just before Kezeroth could see it, sparing the Heroes from his gaze.
Narrator: He is searching for his destiny, but he will not find it in Falconreach.
Narrator: Kezeroth will leave. He'll

Narrator: *cough* Ow?…That's not…Is that all I can do for you?

Narrator: Kezeroth's going to start ripping open the buildings soon…

Narrator: Stop! The Hero and their friends stop panicking. I can fix this! I have to fix this.

Narrator: …Kezeroth shouldn't have learned about your planet's existence. Not this early.
Narrator: This world is gentler than mine. It isn't prepared for the Glacerans. That's not fair.
Narrator: To make it fair… we have to bring him back to my turf.
Narrator: Come find me in Battleon.

Narrator: My Battleon.

Eternal Sentinel

Narrator: Our Hero forged onward, warmth pulsing in <his/her/their> veins, as <he/she/they> passed through the... Neverglades?

Narrator: Hmm, let me think… Mhmm, this is the right way.
Narrator: It might just be an empty meadow here, but that Battleon does exist in another time and space. Should be enough to work with.

Narrator: ...Yeah, you're right. You should know the full picture.
Narrator: Just please believe me, and don't tell anyone else. It might break things, or rip open a wormhole…

Narrator: Actually... Hold that thought. I think— Yes, she's here! I have a surprise for you!
Narrator: Ehem! Our Hero sees a flicker of a campfire in the distance. <He/She/They> squinted and noticed a familiar shade of red.

Narrator: To the Hero's amazement, they reunite with the Empress of the—

Narrator: Ow!

Narrator: ...Okay. Baby Gravelyn isn't what I expected, but that's fine! All good!

Narrator: The young Empress of the Shadowscythe—

Narrator: !!!

Narrator: ...
Narrator: ......

Narrator: .........
Narrator: I... no, <he's/she's/they're> right. And I'm sorry. I thought they could help.
Narrator: "The Glaceran's arrival prompted Empress Gravelyn and her father to return to Greenguard."
Narrator: That's how I made them come back to you. I think my impression of Gravelyn affected her too.

Narrator: I can fix that! Glacerans are from a planet that's practically a block of ice!

Narrator: In that unforgiving world of snow and blood, Warlords are born to fight until one remains.
Narrator: That's their meaning of life – the only reason to exist.
Narrator: Kezeroth and his brother were their greatest and deadliest. He took to the sky, seeking to make destruction the destiny of all life—

Narrator: I sure hope not. Karok isn't as powerful as his big bro, but he's just as bloodthirsty.

Narrator: Karok was here? No way! Who defeated him?

Narrator: Yes, and I'd offer my neck in apology if I could.

Narrator: A page from a journal? This could only have been taken from 'Battleon.'

Narrator: It isn't anything like that! It's... different! But… It's nice to see you two together.

Narrator: Aria? NO! "Our Heroes came across Aria. She was frozen and buried neck deep in snow."

Narrator: Artix... "...was frozen, but alive. Kezeroth must have left them here to scare our Heroes."

Narrator: After a long and arduous journey, our Heroes come across...the corpse of Kezeroth's younger brother.
Narrator: Karok arrived far earlier than he did. What could have killed him?

Narrator: ... <Character>, I'm a little jealous of you. Something like this could only happen here.
Narrator: "Hope lived in the lost Glaceran's chest. Gravelyn bravely reached into—"

Narrator: Wait…
Narrator: "Sepulchure sensed the impending danger and reacted just in time!"

A Final Peace

Narrator: Ahem! Where was I?

Narrator: Ah, that's right.
Narrator: "Sepulchure sensed the impending danger and reacted just in time!"

Narrator: I'm more than happy to!

Narrator: Our Hero dispatches the riffraff with ease!

Narrator: One slash shatters bone, and a mean punch sends guts flying! Oh… I don't think I can get away with that.

Narrator: My Battleon, the Gravelyn I know, her father, Kezeroth, Karok… with enough of these elements here…

Narrator: Not gonna lie… I want to see how Kezeroth vs Sepulchure shakes out, but you gotta help him!

Narrator: Kezeroth's cold literally freezes the Hero down to the marrow in their bones, but they persist! They have to!

Narrator: The cold from Karok's body is freezing her, but it fades! She—

Narrator: Gravelyn...
Narrator: This is... Hope.

Narrator: This is my Battleon.
Narrator: An old foe, Kezeroth.
Narrator: His brother, once again in opposition.
Narrator: A legend I only know from stories.
Narrator: One of my dearest friends.
Narrator: A familiar blade, and—

Narrator (merged): Me. Us. The Heroes of this story.
Narrator (merged): Long time no see, Kezeroth. Or actually, nice to meet you.
Narrator (merged): Put your money where your mouth is, and take on someone your own size.

Narrator (merged): Just kidding. You would've liked that, huh?
Narrator (merged): But it isn't what you deserve.

Narrator (merged): In my time and space, we needed limitless might and power to fight monsters like you.
Narrator (merged): This world has no need for that.
Narrator (merged): It healed your brother's soul, and allowed Gravelyn to be Lynn.
Narrator (merged): We're not needed here, so let's end this story on a softer note.

Narrator (merged): With a touch as soft as a sigh, the monster known as Kezeroth is no more.

Narrator: Dot Dot Dot. Haha! Awkward. I thought I'd be dragged home by now.

Narrator: That would've been you one day, but there was a little temporal mishap that sped up the schedule.
Narrator: You're the real deal. I know you would have defeated him without my help.
Narrator: It's just that it would have taken a chunk out of your life, and a lot of sacrifice.
Narrator: After all you've been through, and what you'll have to go through later… I wanted to be a little selfish.
Narrator: I hijacked the narrative to close the chapter early. Wish I could have done it smoother.

Narrator: Well, tell me? Who am I?

Narrator: That's your answer, and it is the truth.

Narrator: Guess that's my cue.
Narrator: Where I'm from, the story's several centuries ahead of yours.
Narrator: Whatever your story throws at you, I know you'll always make it in the end.
Narrator: Take care, and happy Frostval!

Narrator: How about something more flashy?

Narrator: And as the hour approached midnight, the Hero gazed up into the sky.
Narrator: In that moment, an aurora connected two skies. The Hero managed to catch a glimpse of—
