Peace

Three beats of the drum, three beats on the drum.
Play that melody when the end has come.
Do ye close my eyes, for that they’ll be numb.
Sew shut my mouth, I’ll already be dumb.
Find me when it ends.

When the fires are spent,
The battles ended;
When the war cries cease,
When all is mended,
I will then return.

When you all realize
And see your folly;
When souls are lifted
And faces jolly,
I will then return.

The bugles yet weep,
The pipes, they still groan.
The drums give lament
For all now alone.
Find me when it ends.

But when those that are gone now, reunite;
When they’re with their loved ones in the still night;
When you all find your way out of this fight;
When all is calm- then I will alight.
I will then return.

but who was left...?

When the dust was cleared
And the wreckage gone,
It still was not clear
As to who had won.

Which side's victory
Should be resounding?
From whom should the joy
Be us surrounding?

With both sides broken,
Who claims to be whole?
Can one state triumph?
Did one meet their goal?

Both armies were bombed,
Only humans died.
On both sides, only
Human beings cried.

There is one with sense
In this land, now cleft-
A single young child
Writes, "but who was left...?"

Take A Pill

If you're feeling ill,
You can take a pill.
Fear you're getting fat?
Just take some of that.

If life has no zeal,
If nothing seems real,
They can fix you up.
It may seem abrupt...

Over-medication,
Then inebriation.
Next intoxication,
Lastly expiration!

Everyone will cry,
"You took medicine,
Why'd you have to die?
Why did your life end?

"Shouldn't that have cured
Every little thing?
We were so assured,
Now we're just searching...

"For some medication
To alleviate sorrow.
Something we can borrow?
Looks like you've got a lot."

The Toy Soldiers

Line them up along the banks,
Each firing their gun.
Shoot them down by neat, clean ranks.
Murder them one-by-one.

Who is there to protest
When they're only plastic toys?
Whose morals will you test
With the generals young boys?

Teach them not idealism,
Teach them to adore war.
Tell them that it is wholesome,
Tell them to battle more.

What happens when that child
Grows up to command armies?
What if they then run wild?
How great will be the follies?

Remember Always

While he lay upon his death-bed,
Up again he raised his old head.
His milky-white eyes opened wide
As they sensed me there by his side.

He uttered, "I've lived many years,
From both pain and joy have shed tears.
So as I am this world quitting,
To give you advice seems fitting."

Kneeling by the bedside, I leaned
To see what from him would be gleaned.
I drew close to his whisp'ring lips;
His voice was cracked like old bull-whips.

He said, "Child, as you live your life,
Beware of pain, with which it's rife.
Remember simple happiness,
Remember purity's clean bliss.

"Forget all which has caused you pain,
Remember that which keeps you sane.
Ignore all those who'd do you harm,
Reminisce on summer nights warm.

"All living things someday must end.
Remember this, let not it rend
Your grieving heart in pieces two.
Evoke those who care about you."

The church bells could be heard ringing,
Somewhere outside a bird singing.
Though the only sound from the room:
Grandfather heralding his doom.

"One last important thing to know
Before I finally must go:
No matter how old you may be,
I'll forevermore stay with thee."

He laid once more on his pillow;
I could swear I saw him softly glow
As he gave into gentle Death.
A gasp- no more. His final breath.

Chessboard As Life

The Pawn- hardworking, common man.
First to die, but part of the plan.

The Knight- the valiant cavalier.
Military man without fear.

The Rook- society's standard.
Will move both far back and forward.

The Bishop- pious, pure and clean.
Until he's studied, so he seems.

The Queen- power behind the throne.
Violence she seems to condone.

The King- the bloated plutocrat.
His pockets huge, his wallet fat.

The Board- the level playing field.
Upon it shall fate be revealed.

Blank

Make me bleed with your claws,
Show me all my many flaws.
You made me walk the plank,
Still I stood there- smiling, blank.

Knock me out, stand me up.
I see how you are corrupt.
Your putrid, diseased hand
Is binding me where I stand.
Blank.

Stack the deck, load the dice.
Decry right, exalt all vice.
You crush me with your tank,
Still I endure it all, blank.

It seems you'll never tire
Of scorching me with Hellfire.
Shedding still not a tear,
I shall stay forever here.
Blank.

Triangle Trade

Darkness permeates the air,
Small children huddle in fear.
The smell of Death pervades the nest.
No sympathy to be found here.

Clink, clank.
Dark, dank.
Whip crack,
Break back.

The silence now is roaring,
Chains whispering of horror.
What's coming now cannot be stopped;
All the adults smell the terror.

Drip, drop.
Hearts stop.
Ship sway
All day.

Load them off, send them away
To the grinning auctioneer.
Hear the clinking of all the gold,
That which shall our lives commandeer.

Call out,
Yell, shout.
Then sell
All to Hell.

The Pirates of eBay
After the first sung verse, to the tune of "The Ballad of Gilligan's Island"

(Spoken)

"Hey, what are you doing?"
"I be takin' movies off of YouTube, puttin' 'em on DVDs, and sellin' them on eBay! Arr!"
"Oh, you're a pirate?"
"Aye. Be ye wishin' to join me crew?"
"What's it like?"

(Sung)
Fifteen men on a movie case,
Yo, ho, ho and a blank DVD.
Do ye have any Chevy Chase?
Yo, ho, ho and a blank DVD...

Sailing along the World Wide Web
To find something to steal.
It's as easy as shoplifting
Without shrink-wrap to seal.

We could download that Catwoman.
But wait, that was a bomb.
Perhaps Mission Impossible?
No, I do not like Tom.

Come join the Pirates of eBay!
We're a bunch of dumb kids
Who only log on to YouTube
To sell illegal vids.

Our galleons are all laptops
With an excess of RAM.
If you value the industry,
We suggest that you scram.

The FCC hates all of us,
They've sued us for a lot.
I have to pay two million bucks,
Or I can just get shot.

Come join the Pirates of eBay!
You'll see all you can see.
Please visit us in this prison,
We're all rather lonely.

(Listen now you children: just disregard this song.
Don't be a Pirate of eBay,
'Tis really, really wrong. 'Tis really, really wrong...)

Evermore

Ever waiting,
Ever searching,
Ever fighting,
Evermore.

Never ending,
Never winning,
Never fleeing,
Nevermore.

He doesn't think that he can change the world,
Despairing of all of his solutions.
Ever waiting, watching for someone else
To instigate the revolution.

Ever destined to fail, for he won't try.
After all, he's just another number.
Just another miserable person,
Sure someone else will end the slumber.

Nothing will shift if no-one will change things,
Neglect the sprout and it will go to seed.
Open your eyes and win back your freedom-
It's not a want, it's a primal need.

Never failing,
Never losing,
Never dying,
Nevermore.

Ever fighting,
Ever battling,
Ever winning,
Evermore.

Inarticulacy

My steps are fumbling,
I am still stumbling.
Need to find some new way
For me to at last say,
"I do care."

Why is it I'm failing,
My mind is derailing?
Can you see the brief gleams
Of my hopes and my dreams?
I must share.

This internal torture,
Leaving me so unsure,
I simply must stop it.
Why can I not drop it?
I will tear.

Inarticulacy,
It's been consuming me.
I have so much to say,
But the thoughts never stay.
I do care.

The Difference
Could be read by two people, alternating verses.

Never ceasing to work,
Our striated backs run crimson.
Though the fields are lush green,
It seems more like a warm prison.

Laughter fills perfumed air,
'Tis a display of opulence:
A great masquerade ball
Which ignores the toiling peasants.

Quick, hush up the children,
Dost thou wish the masters to wake?
Remember the last time,
How many lashes we did take?

Ah, the feel of satin-
Is it not so soothing and soft?
'Tis so very wondrous,
The comforter's quality loft.

Time to begin our chores,
As the rooster has been crowing.
Do ye tend to the stock,
To quiet down their deep lowing.

Best watch them carefully,
If thou dost not, then they will shirk
Away from their labors;
Heaven has destined them to work.

O God, he has the pox!
Does this mean one of us is next?
We must pray the surgeon
Has a cure in one of his texts.

Now, stop with thy moaning,
Thy despairing cries of horror.
From the noise, one would think
Someone had brought back the Terror!

Please, master, please spare him,
I am sure he will be well soon.
Leave his day of judgment
To the inevitable Doom.

I said stop with thy tears,
I simply do what must be done.
Thy sobbing entreaties-
Thou acts as though he were human.

What is the difference
Between the servants and lords?
Only that the masters
Are in command of all the swords.

One-Hundred

When one-hundred people finally scoffed,
One-hundred televisions were shoved off.
The screens which had transmitted "altered truth"
Now were subject to those hundred aloof.

One-hundred people marched on the crushed glass;
A grand revolution was soon to pass.
One-hundred bright faces turned to the sky,
One-hundred voices emitted a cry.

"We're sick!" called the voices, shouting as one.
"Sick of that which needs to be over, done!
"Sick of the ways we have been mistreated,
"Sick of the ways that we have been misled!"

When the shouting was heard, many doors closed.
They're just malcontents, those others supposed.
At the same time, more TVs were thrown out,
Two-hundred more people to join the bout.

They marched to the station and requested
That all of the lies should be sequestered.
Three-hundred were met with blank refusal,
Three-hundred were met without approval.

The three-hundred hearts began to sink low,
Those three-hundred hearts had been struck a blow.
But three-hundred more joined in the rally,
Six-hundred more eyes could finally see.

Six-hundred movements refused to despair,
Six-hundred fists were thrust into the air.
They marched onto the middle of the town,
Eventually four-hundred more came down.

One-thousand souls demanded their justice,
One-thousand souls were all speaking their piece.
To some of the onlookers, it seemed strange:
One-thousand souls were roaring to have change.

The Golden Eagle

A long, long time ago,
There was a Little World.
Hidden from the corrupt Big World,
Here happy people's lives unfurled.

Within the Little World,
There was a little town;
The people there together forged
A pair of precious golden crowns.

On the first golden crown,
The people wrote, "Freedom."
Meaning that for which they had fought,
All the battles which they had won.

The second, they called "Hope,"
This one was well-adorned.
In the future, when they lost it,
It became the most widely mourned.

The people all joined hands,
Dancing their cares away.
They cared not for the outside World,
That which was to lead them astray.

All songs were sung of joy,
Peace and security.
All dances were of ignorance,
Innocence's naivety.

Outside, in the Big World,
Everything was chaos.
The people lacked stability,
An absolute lack of pathos.

Then the Big found the Small,
Discovered their concord.
The Big sent out missionaries,
Broke down the Smalls' protecting ward.

The Small welcomed the Big,
To them they showed their lives.
The Big quietly recorded,
Relayed reports back to their hives.

The Small People displayed
A simple happiness;
The Big People never had this,
They knew not of what they had missed.

The hivelords of the Big
Watched all of the reports.
Quietly, they feared the public-
How would the Big People retort?

"They must never see these,"
Warned the ruling hivelord.
For then, the people might demand
The ignorance the lords abhorred.

They took action swiftly,
Subduing the Small folk.
To the lords, it was nothing more
Than a wonderful, divine joke.

As a final insult,
They melted the gold crowns.
Both were reshaped as an eagle,
All the people had to bow down.

Someday, they will revolt.
Someday, they will receive
Their liberty, sadly stolen;
They must recall how to believe.

POM: Prisoner of Mind

One more day slips away
As sand grains between my fingers,
How many have passed now?
Seems I still must pay.

My striped back bleeds
With the shame of my ancestors,
With my imprisonment,
With my endless needs.

I long to taste the air
Symbolizing my lost freedom,
Every battle I have fought,
Escape from this lair.

My captors long have fled,
Yet still must I remain in here;
They left me here to rot,
A concrete death-bed.

No amount of great wealth
Could bail me from this prison cell.
What a desolate existence,
To be a pris'ner of one's self.

Letters To Josephine

Year of 1844.
My Beloved Josephine,
How are things faring with you?
Still keeping the house clean?

My service now is over,
I'm returning back home.
I hope to find a house soon,
That I may cease to roam.

When I've enough capital,
I hope to press my suit.
I shall return to my job
To aid in my pursuit.

They shall be glad to have me,
Of this, I am quite sure.
I was their most skilled worker;
I shall not be long poor.

Keep your door open for me,
I shall try to come soon,
To arrive near by your side
Beneath the watching moon.

Year of 1844.
My Darling Josephine,
I'm a victim of the times,
My wallet has grown lean.

A dollar in my pocket,
I'm trying to survive.
Fired from the factory,
My funds, they have been gyved.

They say that times are changing,
None with skills can remain.
Those damned factory bosses-
Oh, how can I explain?

Why have they forsaken me?
I'd worked for twenty years.
Have I become a burden?
I've done more than my peers.

How I long to be with you,
To smell your sweet perfume.
Ah, don't worry, Josephine,
Things will be better soon.

Year of 1845.
My Dearest Josephine,
I am living on the streets;
I feel dirty, unclean.

Is this the result of Fate,
That most fickle mistress?
Perhaps the Heaven above
Is causing my distress?

No, it is the factory.
It seems that they have turned
To some metal contraptions,
Not a few workers learned.

I always reach for the stars,
But the ceiling falls down.
Hits me hard on the head,
Sending me to the ground.

I know I must keep up faith,
But my dear, it's so hard!
It feels as if my spirit
Has been clawed by the pard.

Year of 1846.
Oh, my Josephine sweet,
If your hand could touch my chest,
Would you feel a heart beat?

I now hate this existence,
The constant unknowing,
The everlasting torture,
The unyielding paining.

Has been too long since I wrote.
Do you yet look the same?
Your appearance escapes me,
The thought fills me with shame.

Must I constantly obey
The commands of my fate?
If I were not to give in,
Would my sorrow abate?

I want to learn how to dance
To my very own beat.
Want to live life as a man,
Not some thief on the street.

Year 1847.
Heaven's Angel On Earth,
How I have missed your caress,
I suffer from its dearth.

My stomach yet is empty,
I know not for how long
I may retain consciousness...
I shall recall thy song-
----------
Here he stopped his last letter.
Looking up through the gloom,
He took one glance at the place
Which would denote his doom.

Cursing once more his sad fate,
He collapsed to the ground.
As his face hit gentle snow,
There was hardly a sound.

Perhaps by some twist of fate,
Perhaps by some instinct,
The owner of the building
Looked out on her precinct.

Laid out on the snow's blanket
Was Thomas, her suitor.
She went to his heaving side,
Looked upon his pallor.

His eyes slowly cracked open,
Lips curved into a smile.
He asked, "My dear Josephine,
"Could I stay for a while?"

The Jester

Hello, I am the Jester.
Feel free to laugh at me,
To mock my many sorrows,
My pain and misery.

Feel free to call me a fool,
Doubt my intelligence.
You, sure in your own wisdom,
All of your false brilliance.

Now you clerics and you priests,
All claiming to know God-
Why is it I whom you scorn,
On I, why do you trod?

Now you monarchs and rulers,
All claiming to know all-
Why is it I you ignore?
Can I not cause your fall?

Now you peasants and commons,
All claiming servitude-
Why do you put up with this,
These offences so lewd?

Written Battle

Cleaning out the pus
From my bleeding trust,
Killed by my enemies:
All these tyrant kings
Clipping soldiers' wings,
Sending them overseas.

The wound now festers,
My pride it bestirs;
I must rise to action.
The flames in my chest
Now do me behest
To act on my passion.

The words, they flow out,
Take place of a bout-
This is how I battle.
I try to inspire
Other peoples' fires.
It's they whom I nettle.

Well, I may be jaded,
But if I'm hated,
At least I know I'm right.
If you still can't think,
Then you're on the brink
Of losing all your fights.

[A collaboration between 2k2ewyn and myself, hooray! He will write in this color, and I shall write in this color.]

The Final Battle

The flag breaks,
The bugle calls
As we march off to war
Across the field lies our enemy.
Waiting for their chance to strike

It is time to attack,
Shall we strike at their back?
Will we wipe out their race,
Cause them all great disgrace?

A hot tear runs down my face
Never again will I see the sunset
Or the country I so loved
How can I go on with this?

Oh my God, I can't wait!
Must this battle come so late?
My leaders insisted-
Now I'm glad I enlisted!

A few more steps
Until I'm in position
Then, something in the grass stirs
Oh God! I went too far!
I have to get away from the enemy,
Before it's too late!

I look ahead, I see one!
I fire a round from my gun,
Sending him to his death;
He breathes his last, dying breath.

Beside me, behind me
I hear the dying breaths
Or fathers, mothers,
Daughters and Sons
There's blood everywhere
I'm going to die

Wait, what did I just do?
Blood now does the field bestrew!
How can my saneness stay?
I've taken a life away.

A streak comes at me
I dodge it just in time
As I lie on the ground
I realize that it's over
The chaos is done
I'm alone

What's that sound that I hear?
It penetrates through my fear.
It's the sound of absence...
Suddenly, there is silence.

But wait!
As the smoke clears,
I see a figure in front of me
By instinct, we aim our guns
I'm ready to fire

Shall I take life again?
If I do, then do I win?
But this is not a game,
It is only a great shame.

What do I do?
I could kill him,
And walk away the victor
I prepare myself. I'm ready
I fire

Ah, an end to the wait,
A release valve for all hate.
I pull, I fire, I die.
Thud.

The bullet hits
But then why do I feel pain?
I look at myself
I'm bleeding.
I'm dying
I'm dead

What was this war's purpose?
Was it, as it seems, causeless?
Must they yet continue?
When will we be through...?

Music

I close my eyes to everything,
All the pain that I feel.
Nothing can break my barricade,
It blocks out all that's real.

The kind melody is flowing,
Silencing all outside.
It closes out and bandages
All the thorns in my side.

No matter what the words have said,
I embrace it the same.
It is nice to have simple bliss,
A break from the Life game.

I close my ears to everything,
All that has made me sick.
In fact, the only time I'm deaf
Is when I hear music.

Soul Rubble
For an indescribably excellent friend.

Would you help me get out of this grim place?
I can't recall your face...

The innards burned out, the building fell.
In that house, my soul dwelled.
Through all of the rubble I must climb.
Help me fast, there’s no time.

I soon gave in, caved in to despair;
My shouts were lost in air.
Talons of fear clutching at my throat
Choked away any hope.

At last, you finally came along.
My soul weak, your words strong,
You pulled me out and you pulled me up,
With mead sweet filled my cup.

I emerged from the debris alive,
Even though my soul dived.
My eyes are open, I now can see:
You remain there for me.

You assisted me when times were tough,
I can’t thank you enough.

I Exist

I am
Alive;
I can
Survive.

I hear,
I see.
This year,
I'm me.

I still
Am sane,
I feel
Human.

And by
The way,
I cried
Today.

I must
Resist,
I must
Exist.

Level One Lament

I grabbed my sword and I grabbed my shield
And seven Sneevils I promptly killed.
I drank a health potion and I healed
Back the damage the goblins had dealed.

I thought that I was lookin' mighty fine
With a longsword in these hands of mine,
So I went to Aeris where I could find
Someone to battle who was of my kind.

But it seemed the wrong group I had chose',
For as the platform slowly rose
I saw I came up just to the toes
Of a level forty sporting two bows.

I thought for sure I would soon be dead
When I saw the arrow comin' at my head.
But a phrase echoed within my head
"Don't worry, noob, you won't be dead."

I found out later that what he meant
Was that only about one-percent
Find that their sleep is permanent.
Yet I still sing a Level One Lament.

Circus Freak

"Come take a look, come take a peek,
If it's entertainment you seek.
See the man who lies in disgrace,
Come look at his bestial face!"

So called the barker near the tent,
Jeering at the Beast-Man's lament.
All of the people gathered near,
Suppressing their unneeded fear.

They all had come to see the show,
Many with their children in tow.
What would he be like? they wondered.
Will he be ugly, just absurd?

Sweat danced down their crimson faces.
Their anticipation now blazes:
They cannot wait to get a glimpse
Of the Beast-Man, the King of Imps.

Finally, the curtain drew back.
All the ceiling lights dimmed to black
As the great Beast-Man was revealed.
Inside of a large cage, he kneeled.

What they had expected was wrong.
He glanced at the people side-long,
And though they viewed him as mere chaff,
He stared at the people and laughed.

The "beast-man" which they all now saw
Was not really a beast at all.
"Just look in the mirror," said he,
"It is then beasts that you will see!"
