 I've never been a big fan of the saying "show, don't tell" in writing because it doesn't really tell you anything. However, I found this. The former quote sounds like some it was calculatedly made as a bulletpoint, whereas this is from an actual writer and makes it sound much more genuine:

As little as I think Emerson would agree with me in copying down what he had said word for word, far too many forget nowadays that to doubt one's self is to shoulder the burden of a life dependent on others.
