In a mildly embarrassing display of geekiness, I think I can remember my whole RP history on these boards…

Pre-wipe...

2004 Alone in the Dark. A mage meets other adventurers in a tavern. The group get attacked by undead, and then journey with the mage to banish a demon that is hunting him. RP concludes with demon being banished.

2004 The Demons Within (this is the one RP whose title I’m struggling to remember for certain) A group of adventurers meet in a tavern, a brawl ensues, and the RP sadly dies before it gets going.

2004 The Darkstone As the agents of darkness rampage through the lands, a group of adventurers piece together keystones to unleash an ancient weapon against the horde. Unfortunately, it turns out that the ancient weapon is an even greater evil. Gods die, cities crumble, and eventually evil is vanquished at the RP’s conclusion.

2005 The War of the Angels An angel leads a band of warriors into a realm of demons, where they encounter a group of humans who have been exiled in that realm. The warrior journey to the demon king’s lair and the RP sadly dies before a conclusion.

2005 Justifying a Rampage, Excusing a Massacre Lizard hordes rampage the lands, destroying various cities that try to stand before them. Sadly, the RP dies.

2005 Against Time A mage journeys back in time to prevent an apocalypse, by seizing a book that’s buried in an ancient city (which was destroyed in the Darkstone RP) before his younger self can grab it. Sadly, the RP dies.

I started a long time ago. I don't remember exactly how long, it must have been 2004 or 2005. My parents thought it was a bizarre activity. I was in one RP with Dark Lancelot before my parents decided I shouldn't be allowed to do it.
I took another crack at it by running my own RP but I just didn't have what it took to keep things interesting and integrate everyone's characters into the story cohesively.
After I turned 18 and could do whatever I wanted I came back and really gave it a good try in 2010 in a storyline RP and a Elemental tournament RP. I lost the first round of the tournament and other players quit the storyline RP.
I don't know how many people are doing this any more.
I find myself with a lot of free time since I couldn't get enough money to stay in college so I want to give it another go around. I'm a competent writer.

@Sate: Your parents thought it was a bizarre activity? I guess it's no different from when people use to think that D&D players 'became' their characters and it was 'Satanic' and other such nonsense.

Roleplaying is really no different from childhood games. When I was little we played 'Teenagers' and 'Club'. We acted like teens in the game Teenagers, so in essence we just roleplayed. In 'Club', we made little shack-like buildings in the woods, and used fake money to buy and sell things from each 'office' (or store); like a little economy. Only difference is we type it up on the forums.

I'd say we might have a decent enough community once things get smooth (we pass the Academy). I think I've seen a lot of new faces/names over at the Bios and OOC Interaction threads, which is a good thing.

And I'm sorry about your financial problems. I too have similar problems. I also have all the time in the world. Anyway, glad to have you with us Sate.

This board was the first place I ever RP'ed.

Here's some boring stuff you don't care about. I used to go to the local library and I occasionally saw a man with a white beard play a cartoon game on their internet computers. After seeing this a few times and being too shy to ask him about it I snooped the browser history after he was gone and started playing Adventure Quest. I remember fighting so many monsters so I could get the coveted Ice Katana because it was so powerful during the fire war. Not long after that I found myself on the message boards and then the RP board.
For years prior, I might have watched a movie or television show and pointed at a character, "That's Jess" or "That's Curtis". I was relating the characters to the people I knew. My firends and I took it a step further and said, "I am Nash and you are Alex," and we would sit around and play out how these fictional characters might interact in a make-believe situation. We reached the conclusion that Nash's full name was Nash W Griswold Jr. and that he got magical powers from his cow-licked hair by having a magical cow literally lick his hair. I did not know what role playing was until my sister told me that I was doing it and that because I was deciding what Nash would do Nash was considered to be my "Char". I remember this vividly, that she explained how all of her friends would watch japanese cartoons and decide which character would be whose "Char'.
Anyway, back to the Battleon RP board. I had spent too much time in school doodling superheroes like I saw in after-school cartoons and so I already had a bullpen of imaginary characters to pull from and adventure with. I only remember the RP I joined called Biting The Hand That Feeds You ran by Dark Lancelot and remember I really didn't know what I was doing. I hadn't thought out my character's history (in the AQ setting) and I was not descriptive enough in my writing so anywhere that my character was not bland, it was cliche. Dark Lancelot left during that RP and we never finished it. I had saved the RP content in a document on the computer where my parents found it.
Although my sister carried on RPs on many sites, mostly in Neopets Chatroom, I didn't really move on anywhere else. The Neopets chatroom went far too fast for me, I thought there was no way anyone could possibly type any worthwhile post because they came in so fast, a dozen in as many minutes. I was correct. So for the most part I only ever returned to AQ boards occasionally if I felt the need to RP. My sister moved on to pen-and-paper role-playing and then to Live Action Role Play. A couple of years ago my friends started playing paper roleplay and I played with them for a year or two and it was very fun. But we grew apart, maybe we grew up, and there's not a lot of interest in it anymore. I tried Live Action myself twice, I thought it was very entertaining because it was so elaborate. I rode with my sister's roommate for 3-4 hours to a swamp where it was organized. My last experience was with my sister and her roommate in a paper RP. I thought of how difficult it is to get everyone together in the same place at the same time for a couple of hours then I remembered the ol' AQ boards where I can post my character's action and just go about my day while others write their posts. This is probably my favorite form of RP.
