TJByrum -> Your RPing History (12/7/2012 16:21:54)

Since 'everyone' is practically here (all the RPers coming to this place) I figure we might as well visit Yulgar's Inn, pull up a seat, sit around the fire and tell some stories.

When was the first time you RPed and what made you start RPing to begin with? What was your first RP and what did you like about it? Just discuss your beginnings of RPing. (This accounts for any and every forum you've on, not just BattleOn).

I first started roleplaying under this account on these forums back in mid 2009 if I remember correctly. At first I didn't understand the concept of RPing, was deeply confused, and asked a lot of questions. But I learned. I RPed in Cod Cod's "The Raven Tower" in the Role Playing forums, it was my first RP ever. I'll admit, I was a terrible RPer and should have spent time in the RPA before anything. I remember RPing in "Mandate to Heaven", as well as other RP's but there name escapes me. I moved to the RPA at a later date and made my home there for the next few years until I came back recently and started RPing in the RPA (again) and I flirted with the RPB, trying to see its revival but to no avail. All the while I've RPed on at least 5 other forums, including the Bethesda forums.

black knight 1234567 -> RE: Your RPing History (12/7/2012 16:43:15)

I started RPing on the third of January, 2010. And god was I horrible. I cringe when I read my old posts.

TJByrum -> RE: Your RPing History (12/7/2012 17:46:54)

@BK: No worries BK, I think you've improved quite a bit by reading your other posts. Keep up the good work and always strive to be better. I consider you an experienced and well-known RPer around these parts.

Jexorin Rast -> RE: Your RPing History (12/7/2012 19:26:34)

I started last month, but being a writer, I wasn't to bad at it. But I was confused. The first RP I was in was The Rise of Lord Frydae. Then a week or two later, I made my own. It didn't get farther than two players being accepted in the OOC until this big change happened. It hadn't even started.

Eukara Vox -> RE: Your RPing History (12/7/2012 23:44:17)

Ah, memories...

My first experience RPing was when I was able to be very active in Cysero's Defenders. My gosh, the fun I had. But I had a lot of learning to do. I was curious about RPing and had clanmates encourage me to join one that was starting soon (June 2007 OMG that was a long time ago...). It was based on the game Fable. It was run by GameGod... who taught me everything I know about forum RPing, which, the style is a bit different from in here.

My character's bio:
quote:

Name: Schuylar
Age: 11
Class: Rogue
Moral sideing: good
Bio: Schuylar was an accident. She was never meant to be born. Her siblings are far older than her and she longs for a friend. Her single mother works all say and leaves the girl alone to fend for herself. Longing for a friend, she explores Bowerstone south and finds the least likely one of all, Whisper.
She grew up to be a good street fighter, a loyal friend and an emotionally abused character run by Gamegod named Glass. The hours I spent RPing with all those guys. A few nights up until 5am... man. There were FOUR follow up RPs to that one, each one amazing to me in the stories and how things just went form place to place in the story. The last though, was cut short due to Gamegod's health. I admired the ability to entertwine so many characters and personalities together to create this ... complicated mass of roleplaying. I was mesmerised. A whole new world of writing was open before me. I was like a kid in a candy store.

I think the biggest thing I enjoyed was the interaction I had with players when we met in game.

I ran one successful RP there, called Treasure Hunter, which I actually wrote "books", "computer files", etc for on the side for character to read, assimilate and use in the RP itself. I began a sequel... but about that time, I became forum staff and slowly, my time was taken from me. I also helped run a cross clan RP, which started out well, but didn't last due to turnover and such. Such is life!

I never RPd here though. I found the method and type of RPing here very different than what I was used to on CyDef. I still find some of the methodology here very different from how I learned. I guess I am one of those who like the "way I did it when I grew up" kind of people.

I remember being a stickler for posting. As a GM, if you didn't give me everything I needed in a post... I made it up for you. And that usually ended in something very bad. One guy... who wouldn't take a hint, wouldn't do his problem solving was nearly killed repeatedly, but I made it more... extremely injured every time. Another got condemned to live with ratlike beings, who hated humans, that lived underground because of his posting behaviour. But, on the other hand, those who player correctly and with thought were rewarded.

Ahhhh, I miss this so much.

I now RP in IRC mostly. It's easier to do when I have to do 100 other things. Not to mention, a very here and now type RPing where you have to think on your feet all the time and there is no delete or backspace key. You live with the decision you made for the rest of the RP. Certain people bug me about GMing. Not sure I want to at this point in time.

nield -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 1:34:48)

Me? Oh boy. I started Rping a loooooong time ago... 'twas the 10th of June in 2006, if memory my aide be- but it might have been July- on a forums called Snafu-Comics. And whilst paying a visit to their Spam Forum out of curiosity, one thread took my fancy. 'twas a thread called The Fight Club. as you can imagine, many antics ensued, I came to mature somewhat (I think...) Throughout the RP, and my skills went from nothing to halfway respectable. All in all, the RP lasted 6 months, and ran for 1094 pages. Those were the days, that I look on with dread. By Olympus was I an immature little brat back then... Most that forum still hates me when I pop by every so often to check up on things.

Legendium -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 3:30:07)

I'm also relatively new. My first RP was Lord Coake's, even though when I first arrived I tried to join Welcome to the Clubs, and ended up breaking about every RP specific rule there is to break. Luckily, Arthur managed to help me sort that problem out before the mods tried to eat me. Ever since, I've been RPing, and find it great fun.

vulkan -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 5:21:07)

oooh...i started out on the old HS char discussion forums. Happy days. I still dont understand why they deleted it. Everyone was having so much fun.

One of the members made an HS RP. It went ok, but died before it got to its fifth page.
After that i didnt RP at all, until i saw rise of lord frydae and thought i would give it a shot.

And here i am now.

TJByrum -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 10:25:42)

@Eukara: Wow, makes me feel new. You RP IRC? Never thought of doing something such as that, really makes you think before doing something major in that type of RP, but it sounds interesting.

@Nield: 2006? Wow, that's about 3 years earlier than myself, but I'm still young in age-terms, so bleh. And what was Fight Club about? Fist fighters?

@Legendium: Everyone has to learn, but it's great to see newcomers learning so well. Sometimes you'll get those people who are to ignorant of proud to work on their skills.

@Vulkan: Perhaps they closed the HS RP down because there's already a RP section. I'm guessing the mods thought you guys were 'out of place' and needed to move on. Your old buddies should have came here - like yourself - and entered the whole of roleplaying.

nield -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 10:38:21)

No, just general fighting... though as you could tell from the name of the section it was in, (Spam forum) you can tell stuff got really weird at points. Like, really freaking weird.

Marcus Twain -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 13:44:04)

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... I began my first forum role play right here on the Battleon Forums. It was 2004 or 2005, I don't specifically recall. This was before the RPA existed and OOC was done in the IC post. If you had something to say OOC you just put it in parenthesis (OCC: like this) before your actual post. So anyone, even someone who had never RPed before, such as myself, could join any RP already in progress. I remember my very first post. I remember this mostly because I made a complete idiot of myself. Back then to apply to join the RP all you had to do was do one IC-OOC post. Your post would look something like (OOC: Hey, this looks pretty cool. Can I join?). Then someone would tell you yes or no. Well, I skipped that portion of the process and just posted an intro where my character met up with their party. In this first post my character called each of their characters by their names. I was too inexperienced to realize what I had done, so in the next post they proceeded to treat my character with suspicion and thought he was a spy or some such. To make the long story short, I learned a lot from that RP and I actually ended up having some pretty good ideas. I have no idea how my writing was. It seemed good to me at the time, but I have looked back on some more recent posts of mine that I thought were good at the time and they turned out to be pretty horrible. As that RP began to die, I began to lose interest altogether. I left the RP forums for about two years and then I returned for a short time. I believe this was 2007. I know I was involved in a few RPs with Gallenfell if anyone remembers him. I created a bunch of characters; my interest in RPing was rekindled for a time. I played in Bloodstone, there was one about zombies in medieval times, a few other ones that I can't rightly remember. Then again, my interest ebbed and I disappeared for a while. I returned in 2010 and took part in the Spring Tournament 2010, The Clubs, a few others as well. I believe this is what is commonly referred to as the "Golden Age" of the RP forums. This was when I really believe I matured as an RPer. My posts were longer, they contained more details, and they described my characters actions better. I also was able to really put detail into a personality. But alas, it did not last. This time I became quite busy with RL and once I became so far behind on the RPs I was apart of, I just quit. Now it is 2012 (almost 2013) and I am back again with renewed spirit. I feel that I am a capable RPer and I do enjoy it here. Previous to all of this and mixed in with that timeline I did play other RP games. I found a wonderful thing called a MUD and that was partly to blame when I lost interest here. There was one in particular that was called Harshlands. It was RP enforced and really played on realism, which I enjoyed quite a bit. That is the history of Marcus Twain.

TJByrum -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 15:02:37)

The old RP Forums sounds interesting... in all honesty, I wouldn't mind going back to that! I know it's bad in practice and in idea, but I like it!

black knight 1234567 -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 15:45:20)

How could you like something yet call it bad? o.o
Well, to be fair, I do like The Room even tho it's horrible...

Exodus -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 16:22:50)

Ahh. My first RP. Cod Cod's Raven Tower RP and the sequel that followed. Good times. Good times. (Sucks on a pipe as he contemplates his age)

TJByrum -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 16:56:41)

@BK: It's one of those things that I know for sure is a bad idea, but it's something I want to experience and be in, so I like it.

@Exodus: I suppose you don't remember me, I RPed in the Raven Tower's sequel as Kranua (I think that was his name). The guy who froze the guards of the Tower we were at and I busted through and stuff; terrible RPer I was! But I remember DSM, Sorahg Angel, Cod Cod, etc.

Riffus Maximus -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 16:58:42)

It depends on what kind of RPing we are talking about. I recall having been introduced to RP by a friend I met in highschool, who was a friend of a friend since primary school. Either way, this new friend introduce me to Dungeons and Dragons. I believe the first time I ever RPed was in 2002 or 2003. Since then, I always have an interest in RPing, be it playing D&D or forums, though I must say, forum RPing came much later.

I began playing AdventureQuest in 2005 I believe. After playing the game, I came to know of the AE's universe. After AQ, I began playing DragonFable, then MechQuest. Curious about how to build my characters on AQ and DF, I visited the AEFs on 2007, and that's here I was initiated to forums RPing when I discovered the forums board. I recall having PMed Cyrus with a character bio and his history as proof I was able to RP on the main RP Boards. Mind that by that time, I haven't discovered the RPA, so I got accepted straight into the RP Boards instead of going through graduation.

I had a good experience from those times. I recall the RP Boards were very active during that period, and my initiation in RPing on forums was a most pleasant one due to the number of interesting RPs and interesting RPers with whom I RPed with. I believe the RP that contributed most to the RPer I've become is Cod Cod's "The Raven Tower" first RP, the only story I ever witnessed a end to it. The RPers there were impressive and experienced fellows, it was most enjoyable RPing with them.

I also recall havbing participated in a RP called "The Legend of Kaethos", on the Paxian Private Forums. Due to inactivity on Paxia, the RP died near its ending, but it was a rather interesting RP and also is perhaps one of those that contributed most to my RPing experience.

TJByrum -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 17:04:22)

@Riffus Maximus: Who was your character in Raven Tower? And have you since changed forum names? Also, how does D&D roleplaying work exactly?

Riffus Maximus -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 17:19:35)

In fact, I had three characters in that RP. They were introduced as some of us began introducing more characters half-way in the RP. Example, Soran Angel was playing Renton, a air-element Death Knight, then introduced Jed'ra and the physical manifestation of Renton's sword, who was a air demon. My character was a Raven Tower's captain, Aaron Blacklight, a Death Knight. Afterwards, in the middle of the RP, I introduced his brother and sister, Adrian and Arianna. They eventually die in the first RP in order for Aaron to become some sort of hybrid Death Knight/Paladin with a touch of Shadowmancer (a mage using shadows).

Previously, in my beginning on the forums, I was known as Necrodan. Then, I change my name to Dread_Shadow_Max, a name that would be most fitting for my own name and my occupation in Nocturu (the Darkness clan in Paxia). Afterwards, I realized that name was no longer fitting me, as my personality changed quite a lot over the time, so I've decided to change my name to Rifffus Maximus, something that was really fitting for my personality and myself.

Hmm... how could I describe D&D's gameplay? Well, I could say there's some sort of freedom during your character creation as to what kind of person you want to be (your physical traits, your personality, your alignement, etc.). But there's a more... statistical(?) gameplay to this. You see, in RP boards, we play while being reasonable in our abilities and the rules set here (godmodding, metagaming). In D&D, you have statistics, numbers that determines if you are successful in combat or performing challenging tasks.
The roleplay basically remains the same, you can interact with people, but the way we play the game is more like video games. Also, since it is a game you play when you are meeting with others, the role-playing aspect is more spontaneous, less likely to have a lot of thought put into the plot between two character. Basically, when you are making character development, it is rather slow-paced, much like the way you would develop yourself in real-life.

Zephyrial -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 18:01:24)

I made my very first post in these here forums right at the beginning of 2008. It was the first time that I had ever done anything of the sort; Role Playing just wasn't something that was done where I grew up. It took the internet to start me down that path. Anyway, I began under the name of Knifeblade39, and had some damn good times: it really was a great time for the RP boards. Eventually RL caught up with me, and I took a break for some months before coming back as Zephyrial. Had some more damn good times, and made some good friends - some of which are still around, others which have disappeared. That's just the way things go!

I have a special bond with this place, and I'm happy to see it still growing and evolving.

TJByrum -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 18:04:41)

I should slap myself silly! Sorry, I didn;t know you was DSM Riffus! Here I was thinking you were from a long ago past.

And the D&D does sound interesting (like all things to me, always want to learn). Like The Elder Scrolls in a way.

EDIT: A link to the site you do D&D would be appreciated DSM.

Riffus Maximus -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 18:23:12)

Hahaha, I'm surprised you didn't know it was me.

Ah, but I play table-top D&D. It's not roleplaying on the net, it's done IRL. I meet up with my friends and we start playing after preparing our books, dices and sheets. Hence why I say it's sponteaneous roleplaying with statistics.

Eukara Vox -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 19:40:23)

I've never D&D RP. I think it would be fun, but just don't have the time to. Not to mention I would have to seek out a group, since my friend circle... isn't exactly RP prone, in any fashion.

I have had my students in my fantasy writing class LARP. When I have the class, they must build/fashion/create their main character's weapon, then we go over how to use it, then I let them loose to LARP fight scenes to get a feel for what it is like to have someone actually swinging something at you. And also, what dialogue, if any, occur at the time. Better writers seek experiences to supplement and improve their writing.

I participate to, which is fun. Wish the class was longer. I wonder if I could do a RP type class... that would rock.

Starstruck -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 20:05:54)

I hopped in a few years ago, late to the party; 2007 I believe, though I could be ridiculously wrong. My first RP is/was Welcome to the Clubs (SINCE IT GO ARCHIVED IT TECHNICALLY IS UNDEAD), which was a fun little free-roam affair that ended up as me and Kooroo with a little help from one or two other people who popped in from time to time. Just like Paxia was. :P Sensed a pattern there.

Surprisingly enough, I still "have" my first character, a tactical genius with dragoney crystal arms and glowing green eyes. I'm still struggling to characterize him completely, but when I get the chance I will. 2013 EC perhaps? I have relatively few characters I like enough to actually reuse where I see fit (Corona, Kainoiay, Yuxe, and Tiure). So far, it seems to be a different character for each AQ element, with Tiure in a state of quantum indecision between Water and Wind (It made sense in my head for him to be Water, but when I entered him into the EC, Super was like "why is he water? he should be wind" and I was like "HE'S WATER BECAUSE HE'S WATER OK?" and now I regret it a lot [:(])

Over time, my characters change and develop to suit my whims and their environment. That's just how I roll.

ON A RELATED NOTE I remember about when superjars started to get big on the RP boards. I remember reading his posts in Nightmare Chess, seeing him apply to the main RP boards (!), and watching him steadily progress through the ranks - AK, Mod, Admin, Supreme Overlord Of All Things Literary. I also joined his RP tournament, in which I attacked my opponent a lot because he didn't respond for 6 weeks. (Superjars told me to be patient a lot, but I wasn't very patient ._.) The tournament didn't make it to the second round, iirc, but it was a lot of fun anyway and I had a ton of fun playing as a Grammar Nazi. :3

TJByrum -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 20:11:40)

@Riffus: Oh. I think you can still D&D RP on the net though.

@Eukara Vox: I'm with you Vox, none of my friends would RP either, they'd think it was stupid. So you're a teacher? Or some form of a teacher? I don't know... RPing in real life would feel... strange to me. I'd feel ridiculous. The only real roleplaying I did with my friends was 'Army' when we were little, as well as 'Teenagers', just two of the many pretend games we played.

@Starstruck: 2007 isn't considered 'late' to me, heh. You guys make me feel new, considering I wasn't around until 2009. I don't have that 'lasting appeal' you guys have. Some of you, like Superjars, Starstruck, Vox, DSM, etc... you guys just have that 'old and reknowned' status about you that wish I had. You're like the 'originals', the people who's been around and everyone knows you. :(

Riffus Maximus -> RE: Your RPing History (12/8/2012 20:46:45)

Right you are. There is D&D concentrated RP websites, like Gemmaline, which is a french website focused on the Forgotten Realms. Some are RPing like the way we do, letting our imagination loose in the world of D&D. However, there's some sites that applies every rules, and that means they RP with dice rolls and turn-by-turn combat situations. I've played the latter on Gemmaline, and I must say it is REALLY slow-paced, and you often grow bored of waiting for others making their decisions and rolling dices before acting on your own. That's why I don't do D&D online.

I have to say, I'm quite lucky to have a really open-minde circle of friend. Not all of friend RP, but I have some who enjoy playing D&D, and I have one of my friend who also RP on forums.
