Okay, so I read through a lot of stuff and there are a bunch of creative people over there going through the RPA.

Lots of characters with lots of different backgrounds, races, cities and places.

And so I had this idea: we could make a world to start an RP in. Created by the members of the RP Forums, working together for a common goal.

And so, this thread was born.

Here's what I think we need, but I'm open to many other suggestions:
Maps (cities, kingdoms, provinces, governments, castles, forests, mountains, etc. etc.)
Races (who inhabits this world)
Histories (where do these people come from)
Magic System (how is it handled)

Join in the fun, creative engine and let's build this world together!

To start us off, what about a planet that is one big forest, with cities interspersed within the trees and vines?

I'd be interested in doing something like this. To be honest, I'd be interested in creating a 'BattleOn RP World', that is a culmination of all of our creations merged into one that people can freely use in any of their roleplays. We could collaborate to form history (such as two nations that got into a war).

I think a large planet with an 'x' amount of landmasses would be a great starting point. Perhaps one region of this world is like what you described: a big forest, with cities interspersed within the trees and vines. But I could come in and say "there's another landmass located to the north called Asgeir'. Then someone else could come in and say "there's a land of elves connected to Asgeir. etc, etc.

I'd like to make this a non-AE construction, since AE already has several rich stories and lots of information available about it. And having a large forest is not as awesome as an entire planet covered with forests... just saying. :P

I'm a fan of a forest covered world ... or perhaps a world covered less specifically by "growth". Which leaves room for a lot more than trees, potentially. Though an endless forest does have its charm.

Well, that's not what I meant. I'm not good at wording things or describing things, or explaining, etc...

I just meant... a blank world. Someone comes in and adds to it, such as a new race, continent, region, etc. Others can come in and add to it as well. And the thread would be one big 'encyclopedia' of our custom world. People could come here, read up on it, and then create a RP that takes place within the world. It's like on big blank world that eventually becomes a culmination of all of our ideas and creations.

The name, 'BattleOn RP World' didn't suggest it took place within the AE universe... let's just say the forums were called 'Ferikar Forums', I would have said 'Ferikar RP World'... if that makes sense... it's a customized world that is exclusive to the members of the Ferikar Forums.

Kashyyk!

Nah, just kidding.

I made my own world in the past. It was quite enjoyable, though I think it required much time to make what was just a sketch of history, the landscape and the people living there.

I love the sound of an endless ocean world. With species adapted to live either underwater, or air-breathing creatures who managed to find a way to live on the surface.

Ooh! I love drawing maps and making worlds!

Let's see. A world should not be the same thing all over. To make a realistic world, we need several different cultures and terrains. Mountains, deserts, oceans, those kind of things are good for dividing cultures. Anything hard to cross. It could even be that this world is oddly shaped. Let's say a square. The edges of the square would naturally be hard to cross.

Or, we could go with a world split in two. Two halves of a plate or a sphere. That would also be a good way to make a divide, and introduce story.

Let's take this cut sphere idea. The two halves are at war with each other. Whatever. Then, there's the divide; the cut part. It would likely work like a cliff. Now let's say no one has ever made it far down that cliff before. There could be someone living there, a secret race that hides the secrets of the world.

Anyway, just an idea.

The first steps are always the outlining of what kind of place the world is. Then you can get in to races, histories, and the reason this world would be good to RP in.

What we should do now is think up what kind of world it looks like. Then we try finding out how things like weather and seasons affect places. Then the races, animals, and botany that is abnormal. Then we add cities along with culture. And last, history.

How about a random world? there is some sort of living...''source'', that depending on how it feels, the environment changes, from sprawling urban environment, to a forest in fall, to icebergs, etc.

Map of Orvestraal

Here's a map I drew for a collaboration story that I was doing with Dwelling Dragonlord.

It was my first try at a map.

How about a world made completely of water with landmasses that float in the skies?
Some on higher levels, some on lower, and still others which are set on the water?

There could even be continents floating up, or even towering mountains.

well, if it is a highly forested world, the "evil" or the "humans" depending on how cut and dried we are going, should be destroying the environment. So there are like, giant, polluted spots in the mass of the forest.

^This

And then we each create continents, regions, landmasses, races, cultures, etc. You can collaborate and let your creations interact. I might create a race of men, and Legendium might create a race of elves. We could get together and write about a war that occurred between the two. Or I would ask if I can connect my humans land to Legendium's elf homeland, divided by a mountain range.

The possibilities are endless!

Anyone remember DWeird's roleplay "The Island"?

I like this idea.
I once had an idea for a trilogy which took place in a place quite similar. Only there were only the floating islands, no base. Just an atmosphere with rocks.

@Ghost

I likes the idea you have.

I think we should all right now decide on what kind of planet it should be.
Then we all make our own countries with races and histories, and connect them all, making a map and a setting at the same time.

It's all up to Superjars. He created this project, and as such I believe we should listen to him.

If we do create roleplays that exist in our own custom worlds, people could refer to this thread for information on that world.

I had something in mind like this:

quote:

Landmasses
Asgeir

Races
Worthians
Elves
Trolls

Civilizations
Eastworth
Northlands

Events
War of the Black Tower
Darkron's War

But they'd have links to the different pieces throughout the thread.

Superjars, I'm wondering if you've got a genre in mind for this world. It always helps to have some background to keep the world at least in character with it's current time and setting.

quote:

Kashyyk!

Or Endor! ^w^

We could add variety in the fact that this forest world is populated by many different kinds of forests. For example we could have a tropical palm forest in the warmer hemisphere and a pine forest in one of the colder hemispheres.

Hmm. Everyone seems to be set on a forested planet. Better go with the flow.

I like Dai's idea, it's a good one. Temperate forests would also be a good idea. High elevations like forest covered mountains would also be nice. Lakes and small water masses would be necessary throughout the landscape for civilization to survive, seeing as water is super important.

That arises the idea of kelp forests. Would those count?

A world flooded with a light, breathable liquid that is viscous enough not to be floating around in the air.
A world torn by massive earthquakes until it was no longer even spherical.
A world where the entire planet has been colonized, refined, and automated to the point of utopia, but all living things have been replaced by robots.

The possibilities really are quite endless. Perhaps we should create an RP Boards RP in which we all play "ourselves" ^_^ we can travel around the galaxy and explore.

Civilizations who live in the canopy? Civilizations who live on the ground? Civilizations who live in underwater kelp forests (credit to Legend)?

And a large three-way war between them all. Flyers vs Walkers VS Swimmers.

@kkutwar: I think we're focusing on what the world looks like at first. But I mean sure, suggest away!

I'm dating a geology major. If we can get some rudimentary maps I can get legit continental drift and mountains and whatnot. :D

On the other hand, square world. Awesome. I also like the idea of two hemispheres divided by a huge crack going down the middle, creating this chasm that is basically impossible to cross (for now). The one side is fantasy, with magic and whatnot, and the other side is high-tech science. Or whatever other division you choose to have. Maybe the one side is not humanoid. At all. And the other side has very few animals. I have no idea. Go crazy.

And then... at some point... we finally build a bridge to cross the gap. And we discover each other. :D

Snakes of Gray. It never actually started, but Frenetic Raptor suggested it :P

I am not tied to any one idea. I like this idea jen has of the square, split world, where one side is fantasy and the other sci fi. But let's get more ideas running!

So, maybe a conglomeration of these different ideas is good? Can we create a believable world out of some of these things, or at least one people are willing to believe in. Which are your favorite components of the ideas we've had so far and what other ideas do you have?

@DaiGris, I have no genre in mind. I threw out a random idea to spark conversation. I like jen's idea of mixing genres. Also, as worlds age and evolve, they'll likely encapsulate several different genre's. Genre is more an RP concept than a world-making one.

@Legendium, I disagree. I think a world where everything is the same can be as different as one where everything is split. That being said, variety is the spice of life, so I'm fine with splitting things up and trying different things. I'm intrigued by this floating continents idea as well... Lots of good stuff everyone!

I think it would be pretty cool if we had the floating idea, but maybe with land colonies? like the skies are the original territories, and the ground is an adventure, with unknown races lurking in the forest. Where the plants are all magical. Like, shoe trees and stuff, mixed in with predatory plants. But the over-world would be highly steam-punk and out of touch with nature, making a crazy adventure.

Nah, Skyward Sword already did that. Let's be uneducated savages who finally found the ability to make their way up to the floating rocks, forcing the enlightened ones up above to painfully acknowledge that the heathens managed to get farther than they did.

Also: fire space ponys pls

wait, really? haven't played skyward sword yet but.... that is the opposite. Though, i see your point. I still like the magic threatening wilderness thing, and the steampunk.
