Heylloes everyone! My name is Aurauris Eilrua, and it's a pleasure to welcome you to my raggedy, well-loved tome. ^ u^

For those of you who have not yet met me, I am an avid advocate of all things pastryesque and sweet (most importantly of these: muffins!), as well as a lover of languages, etymology, and linguistics. Since I have little to no experience as a digital artist and greatly enjoy the physical act of writing, most of my art manifests in the form of handwritten poems, calligraphy, and original alphabets.

This Art Gallery is dedicated to my most fleshed-out alphabet thus far, Dervish, for which I've also developed a language, h'emson. While I won't go into details on h'emson here, you'll certainly be catching glimpses of it throughout my jottings-down of passages in Dervish's varying forms. Though every script can comprehensively be read and written both horizontally (in descending rows, like English) and vertically (in right-to-left columns, like Japanese), I've included the traditional methods for each style in their descriptions, arranged in "chronological" order. Feel free to take a peek below! All comments and questions you might have are welcome here.

        Ancient Dervish
Heavily resembling the simplicity of Roman / Celtic styles of writing, Ancient Dervish stands as the mother-script, written and read horizontally.
My goal is to someday etch a h'emson phrase or two onto a small stone to make an artifact of sorts for fun. C:

        Runic Dervish
This alphabet echoes the ancient Anglo-Saxon runes, and while written horizontally, is read with equal frequency in either direction.
I've found Runic Dervish is quite visually delightful when coupled with doodled maps!

                 — Runic Base (28 April 13)

        Medieval Dervish
I was strongly inspired by the beauty of Old English calligraphy when designing this style, which is both written and read horizontally.
As of late, a project has come to mind that I'm hoping to use this script for in the near future, but for now, it's a secret. :3

                 — Candlelit (28 April 13)
                   — Full Litany (24 June 13)

        Modern Dervish
This was the first style of Dervish I ever created, and is named for its arcs and swirls, reminiscent of the "whirling dervishes" of my native Texas.
Written horizontally and read vertically, this is the everyday, handwritten script of those familiar with Dervish, which I use often when taking notes or writing in a journal.

                 — Modern Base (24 June 13)

        Elevish
A portmanteau of "electric" and "Dervish", this alphabet is adapted to technology's intrinsic presence in the twenty-first century, being typed and read horizontally.

        Brainstorming, Doodles, and Drafts
For those who might be curious about behind-the-scenes and in-betweens!

                 — Fairly Purple Thoughts (29 April 13)
                   — A Joyous Calm (Faerdin's 2014 Birthday Gift)
                     — Miyazaklloween! (15 October 14)

Aura, I can't help but feel that this thread needs to have a counterpart in the L&L section as well.

What do you think?

I have already seen a small amount of Dervish, but I cannot wait to see more. Language-building is a very complex art, and I think it is amazing that you are so eagerly tackling it.
@above: The only purpose I can see a thread in the L&L Forum serving is to explain the structure of Dervish and how it may be spoken. I do not think Aura is ready to cut the umbilical and share that much of it just yet. ;)

Huzzah! It begins! ; u;

Medieval Dervish practice by candlelight, for a bit of artsy fun.
An excerpt from the Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear.
Text reads: "I must not fear."

Aura, I saw your handiwork and I have just one suggestion.

You could've laid a bit more focus on the candle-light as well. Shown a bit more of the flame so that viewers naturally understand that your light source is natural and you don't have to write it out.

In any case, that font is beautiful and with just the right amount of emboldening. Reminds me of the writing on a chocolate cake.

What does it mean?

Just a quick doodle, to demonstrate a basic Runic Dervish text. My apologies if it's a tad blurry to anyone else's eyes as well!
An excerpt from one of my favorite songs, the title of which escapes me at the moment. ^ x^;
Text reads: "For Love is as strong as Death... The waters cannot quench Love, neither can floods drown it!..."

Aura added the translation just a little while ago: "I must not fear." ;)
Both Ancient and Runic Dervish look beautiful, though I think I may actually have a preference for Runic Dervish (Not much of a surprise for me).
It looks neat in a different way from Ancient Dervish's flowing sort of style; it looks rather angular and precise. ^_^

Friendly! Creative!

Interesting gallery, I don't think I have seen typography on here before. I like how precise your scripture is as well, it adds a sense of elegance. I like what I have seen and i hope to see more!

The little ladybug of inspiration alit upon my shoulder this afternoon at the sight of a horde of unholy purple Sharpies invading my pen jar, and I believe I've got a new project in mind! These doodles here certainly couldn't be for anyone the lover of such a color, or fond of fairies...

So many comments already! I can't thank you guys enough, this is super encouraging and I can't wait to keep up the influx of doodles. C:

A quick update list for those stopping by to chat for the first time:

Candlelit (28 April)
Runic Base (28 April)
Fairly Purple Thoughts (29 April)

Arthur:
Y'know, I really do like the idea of having a thread in the L&L Forum once I have enough tidbits of h'emson written out (or perhaps spoken / sung) to display, especially since I've sketched a bit on a few different dialects (etymology, eep! ; u; ). You'll be the first I let know once I get it off the ground! :3
As for "Candlelit", I really wish I had been able to capture the flame as well, but unfortunately, I'm an amateur photographer and this was the only way I could get the lighting soft and not too dark. Maybe next time, thuu!
Thank you oodles again for your support, Arthur; it's a thrill to know that there's someone just as enthusiastic about self-created languages as I am in the Forums. ^ u^

Faerdin:
Not too surprised here either to find you favor the Runic, love, aha. Which reminds me! — Have you ever given thought to what form the Sigil of the Avatars holds? I may have another doodling project in mind, and would love to hear your thoughts. And as ever, endless gratitude for your equally endless support, Rune Knight Eilrua. <3

.Joerte:
*Curtsies warmly* It's an honor to be visited by one of The Gallery's most prolific artists, sir! Thank you very much for taking a peek at my works, and I'll be happy to add more as often as I can. ^ _^

Intriguing works, there is a great replay value in your art. I see something different every time I read the translation and look back. It reminds me of the large puzzles without the image on the box you may not know how it comes together but at an early stage you can appreciate the beauty. Continue to push forward can't wait for more.

Thank you, Jecht, not only for your incredibly generous words but also for a new way of reflecting on and evaluating art I've already penned; "Replay value" isn't something I would have ever associated with art before, but what a wonderfully fresh-eyed perspective it brings to mind! A major encouragement to not get caught up in any tiny details that displease and focus instead on a unique facet every time. C:

Oh wow! I remember my childhood. I used to study calligraphy writings using a book that my friend gave me. Ended up writing like a pharmacist >.>

Well back to your work. I really admired your skills in making calligraphic writings. I only know a very selected people in my neighborliness that knows how to write dervish writings. You are truly gifted.

Do you use pens or brush?

Men I remember spending too many papers practicing one style >.> .

I have given the Sigil some thought, though I would also appreciate your own input.
Until then... *Bows low* M'lady. <3

Also, by the Lords, what has Mel done your latest addition looks splendid. I wonder at what it means!
spoiler:

Perhaps something about ending the purpul? :D

Bruextian:
Your words are endlessly appreciated. It's truly an honor and incredible boost when people are so generous as to send encouraging thoughts my way, and from the bottom of my heart I thank you. *Smiles warmly*
As for your question, so far I've only played with ballpoint ink pens and sharpies (my latest work a chisel-tip, which was oodles of fun to work with :3). Soon, I'm hoping to graduate to a calligraphy pen, or ideally a quill-tip, but that might be a little ways off, still.
My many thanks again, Bruextian, for taking the time to peek at my work! ^ u^

Faerdin:
*Curtsies low with a blossoming smile* I would absolutely love to collaborate with you on a Sigil design, and, if the thought pleases, perhaps weave a few hints of Dervish in there as well. I eagerly await your response, dearest Rune Knight. <3
spoiler:

Shh! Don't give away the surprise just yet! Ish shall be a peace treaty between both the Great Purpul and Bloo Movements. :3

Look like you created a TTF and printed it. Or did you draw all that ?

Your words are too kind, Monsieur-of-the-Epic-Photography! I'll be working diligently to continue delighting and entertaining with my art. Hope to see you around!

Thylek Shran:
Ah, I'm not quite sure what a TTF is; I did indeed draw all of my pieces thus far with but simple paper and Sharpie, thuu! One day, I'd love to branch into varying mediums — perhaps calligraphy brushes and ink — but for now I'm on a bit of a budget and must make do with what's been hibernating in my desk drawer. C:

TTF = True Type Font. As example Arial and Courier in Windows.

With a TTF creator (or just a font creator) you just could print out your language signs
and they will always have the same look but you could easily change their size.
Could safe you alot work and time.

A quickly-doodled snippet of a poem as example of basic Modern Dervish. C:
Text reads: "We met where the Moon, he can't reach / We built a bridge out of fortifying speech and life lessons lent / And when the morning mist cleared, we crossed it at a sprint."

Medieval Dervish again, a full version of Candlelit's text.
This piece is actually from quite a long while back; I lost the file somewhere in my computer, but it's now been found, whee! ^ o^
(My Dervish-scripting's gotten a bit tidier since then, I promise!)
