The issue for me was more that you needed to use 2 Energizes to get Chain Lightning working, so you need 5 cards in total to pull it off (2 Energizes, 2 attack cards, and Chain Lightning.) This isn't necessarily overly difficult (especially if you opt not to CC as was done to pretty good effect in the fire tournament), but if your Chain Lightning shows up too early or the Energizes too late then it can get pretty messy and you have more dead cards than you need. The Arcs usually aren't particularly helpful either since you can only use 1 if you plan on still using Chain Lightning and they're generally much too slow anyway since requiring Energize prevents you from using them early when they'd already have trouble running their course due to MG's lack of defence. Personally because of all the dead cards I'd rather just stick to a pure Fire character, and now that Void Rebirth is a thing it reigns supreme.
That's just my opinion though, a lot of good players really like Mana Guardian.
