Deren Asunder

Encroaching Entropy

Season of Consequences - Entropy Finale 1/3

Drakath stumbles out of his hospital bed, already geared up.

Drakath: ...Marching on the city already... How long was I out? There was the throne room... The outpost... Empty. At least my strength is coming back quickly...

Drakath straightens up.

(Offscreen) Doctor: I'll check on Radagast in a moment, I think I heard... Prince? Who gave you your gear back? You need to rest, you lost a lot of--
Drakath: Get out of my way.

In an unexpected burst of strength, Drakath hurls his bed, which blocks pursuit as he flees. Fade to black.

Karuna and the player character are talking in what seems like a more modern house.

Karuna: That's the gist of the Epsilon project. My father led a team for it. Among other things, they gathered information for the technology that birthed Epsilon. An artificial god meant to supplant Lorithia.
Karuna: His team ran into Shadow influences near the Tempest outpost, and found ways to make power sources out of it. When they realized how dangerous it was, they warned the Alpha not to tamper with it..
<<You>>: ...Which let Epsilon find out about it, and get themself recreated as the Firstborn. No wonder the Alpha couldn't catch their project, Epsilon escaped into the past.
Karuna: He always felt guilty about that. It was only after meeting my mother that he made some peace with it. The first generation of the Numbered Beasts was his next project, but something went wrong and...
Karuna: ...I don't know. He left to rein them back in, and never came back. Eventually I looked into his work. I was tired. I... You heard the 'why'. I put some of it back together, added my own work...
Karuna: That's how the Sigma process came to be. A magical equivalent, using the new beasts as living proxies to distribute the burden of a ritual on that scale.
<<You>>: If it was that private of a process, how did Entropy know exactly what you were up to? Especially when he didn't have the Orb yet?
Karuna: I don't know. I swear. Maybe he was from Alpha. Erebus might have told him. Either way, pushing me along was his backup plan. Taking over Sigma with an Uncreation artifact in hand... *shudder*
Karuna: You were supposed to be an obstacle for him. That was my gambit in cluing you in. Since the King was there to help you stop me... Well. At least you know exactly where Entropy is going, and why.
<<You>>: I still have no idea of how we'll be able to deal with that Orb, but this helps. If we could make it look like you barely won, we might be able to surprise this mysterious dragon. Make him think he'll pick you off.

The screen shakes.

(Offscreen) Lauren: Karuna, <<You>>? Not to interrupt, but Cassie summoned a demon again. I'm in the middle of a lesson here.
Karuna: ...Glad you have a clever solution, but do you suppose you can help me with that one before you go?

MINIBOSSBATTLE: Random non-NPC demon.
Full heal.

In the outer streets of Deren, insurgents of multiple species gather in a line to march on the city. Entropy stands behind them, distractedly looking down and then ahead again right before being talked to. Entropy is a humanoid figure with Drakath's appearance, save for a draconic left arm, black scales creeping around his face, and a crude mask.

Insurgent: Sir?
(Entropy, thinking) ???: I'm losing strength again. Only for moments at a time, but it feels so cold... A feedback shock? No matter. I don't need more information.
Insurgent: Sir! You spaced out again, sir. The loyalists are formed up behind the hills. There's knights trying to hold them back and take over the defense, just like you said... But enough to scare the troops.
???: I was worried about that. When I heard the rumors, I stayed hidden because I didn't want to hijack the revolution. This is your battle, I'm only here to help. But if it's needed for morale...

Entropy takes one hand to his face, removing the mask.

???: People of Deren! Take heart! The enemy is in disarray before the battle has even begun, and we know their every plan! Stay united, and victory will be yours!

(Simultaneously) Insurgents: Is that Drakath?!
(Simultaneously) Insurgents: Wasn't the prince behind all of this?!
(Simultaneously) Insurgents: Hang on, Prince Drakath was terribly sick last week...

Drakath: Yes, I am Drakath, the so-called dragon prince! Your healers released me of the Brilhado's control, and the cursed disease that was to kill me if I ever broke free! But their work isn't done!
Drakath: King Tralin is not the tyrant you believe him to have become! He sought peace with the Brilhado, but fell under the necromancers' control, just as I did! The corruption and infighting is their puppetry!
Drakath: Their control is deep, but they could never emulate his competence and kindness! Surely, you all remember the time when your king was good, and just! A leader of a united and prosperous Deren!
Drakath: But now the Brilhado have their claws on him from the East, and the Crown-Breakers from the North are sure to sense the opportunity! I've been in that court myself, people of Deren, and seen what looms.
Drakath: However! I've also seen the meetings of the Knights, and have all of their movements. Your strategy today was built on the most recent intel from that court. Fight together, and you WILL free your king!
Drakath: Don't fear your brothers, for they'll thank you when you have saved Tralin, as I was freed myself! Follow me into battle, not as your leader, but as one more blade in the revolution that saves him!
Drakath: Corruption is a closed, stagnant, broken system. It falls apart in the end, but we can't simply let our children inherit that burden. Today, you and I are the force that pulls corruption apart!
Drakath: TODAY, WE ARE ENTROPY!

(Simultaneously) Insurgents: We are Entropy!
(Simultaneously) Insurgents: WE ARE ENTROPY!
(Simultaneously) Insurgents: What's an enderpee?

Assume Entropy form, playing as him for the next segment.

FOUR BATTLES: Humanoid enemies, including generic (Non-faction) knights. Full heal every two.

Fade to black. Resume normal form.

Tralin, Peace, and the Chosen are speaking atop the Dawnstone Keep walls.

Tralin: We sent away any officers who had been in contact with the Prince, outnumbered by their peers to avoid any potential foul play. Unfortunately, that's as big of a troop movement as we can conceal right now.
Tralin: We have to assume our teleportation sites are compromised, which cuts off our best way to extract the wounded. The surviving defenders of Dawnstone Keep are still very capable warriors, mind.
Tralin: However, even with a plan to trap the rebels and force their surrender, I fear what raising arms against fellow citizens of Deren would do for morale so shortly after the breach...
Peace: ...I cannot abide by it myself. The civil war is meant to divide our attention, but I cannot tolerate a choice between the world and its people. Even if it means I may not return in time to fight Entropy...
<<You>>: Hang on. You're heading out on your own?
Peace: I will be fine. My Moglin friend has learned much from his teleporter. Entropy can't uncreate the source of his power... As that would be me. I will find a front that would disrupt reinforcements, and deal with it.
Peace: Even if this doesn't give me a chance to identify Entropy, or learn what his timing is... I can at least make sure that you can focus solely on his approach. I shall enact my name.
<<You>>: Alright. I'm sorry I interrupted, then. If you can stop an entire battle for long enough to keep Entropy from getting any help, that'll be invaluable.

Life fades in over Tralin.

Life: Don't exhaust yourself entirely, my friend. I'd like to speak to you again when this is done. And besides... You grow a little more pompous every time you slumber. It'll be a hollow victory if that keeps up.
Peace: Tsk. Court humor.

Peace fades, leaving behind Twig, who beams away.

<<You>>: That saves us one problem. There's still the matter of preparing for a foe who can wield Uncreation, and is causing enough of a disaster with it to keep the gods busy. Even if he can't remove you
Life: Removing foes from history is a fearsome power, yes. Even if those whom he depended on to find this power cannot be removed, Entropy can still use the orb destructively. Those meteors were quite an ordeal.
<<You>>: The only ways I can think of to deal with an enemy like that would be taking them down instantly, by complete surprise, or somehow interfering with their power. But I don't know if that's even possible.

Life fades into Tralin.

Tralin: I'm not an expert per se, but as a cleric of one... Perhaps I can call for help.

The scene shifts to the fields near Deren's capital. Entropy form is assumed as he is joined by insurgents.

TWO BATTLES: Generic knights. Full heal.

Insurgent: The militia has pulled back, but we can see them rallying at the borders.
Entropy: Good. Raise the pikes when the cavalry tries to flank! Second pikebearers, lift higher! Their mounts can spring over the first line! Mages, don't give yourselves away until they approach from behind!
Insurgent: ...We're just going to let them come at us from now on? I know they can't encircle us, but that'll be grueling! It'll take... I don't know!
Entropy: It'll be a long battle, yes. But you can expect them to receive few reinforcements, while yours are on the way. I'll be on my way now.
Insurgent: You're leaving us?!
Entropy: Let's say I'll cut off the reinforcements myself. Straight from the source.

TWO BATTLES: Frogzard Knights. Full heal.

Entropy is left on his own after the battles.

(Thinking) Entropy: That should leave them suitably inspired to keep the battle going. Once I find cover, they won't be able to follow me to the trail kindly left behind by the "Chessmaster".

Cerin enters from the right.

Cerin: Prince Drakath?!
Entropy: The one and... Well. So glad to see you, Sir Cerin, but I have fools to shake off and no time for the one clever tin can this side of the continent to get in my way. Send the king my royal regards... Now MOVE.
Cerin: No. This farce ends now, by word or steel. I... sense your strife, but... No, not here. Only hatred stands before me.
Entropy: ...Right. You ARE an empath after all. And here I'd hoped you'd be helpful for longer.
Cerin: I am far more than that, Entropy. And if all you are is hatred, I have no need to play fair. I will cleft you in twain.
Entropy: And with a cleft like that...

BOSS BATTLE: Sir Cerin. Script: Progress even on defeat.

After the battle, both combatants are down to a knee.

Entropy: How did a knight find such... Nevermind. Catch!

Entropy lifts his weapon and casts a small green meteor, sending Cerin flying, then stands.

(Thinking) Entropy: He'd better not have noticed it... Now to take off before he catches up. My scouts should have a report on the state of the Chessmaster's battle by now.

The player character stands by a pile of defeated bandits.

<<You>>: ...I think that's all of them. How didn't they expect me to catch them snooping about? I've heard of people falling over themselves to flee, but this is ridiculous.

Falerin enters.

Falerin: That would be my work.
<<You>>: ...You have no idea of how good it is to see you right now, Falerin. We're expecting an attack from Entropy at any time, and need help to even come up with a defense.
Falerin: I may have just the idea. I have been shielding you from Entropy's notice while helping my colleagues with the work of undoing his damage, so my power is stretched a little thin...
Falerin: But now that we're permanently rid of the shade... It's high time I help you far more directly.

Evil Unleashed

Intervention Most Divine

Season of Consequences - Entropy Finale 2/3

Entropy runs out of sight and into an alley. From this point, battles are fought in Entropy form.

(Thinking) Entropy: Finally out of sight. To think the rabble would still be of any use after leaving them unattended... The 'Chessmaster' was a better piece than I took her for. King Tralin is in check.
(Thinking) Entropy: Now, if it wasn't for that misbegotten, meddling, broken god-thing... The knowledge of the Alpha, DESTROYED! The Epsilon process would have been mine!
Entropy: Where technology failed me, ritual will have to do. Without the shade's meddling, and with the "Chosen" removed from the past, it's too late to uncover me. Just one more push, and I will unmake it all...
Entropy: The Monster King's folly, the "good" kings shaping MY legacy, the lies of both shadows... and death! Dying, and dying, and dying, and dying again! The all-splitting cold! It will ALL... BE... ERASED!

Fade to black. Show the close-up of a dragon eye opening, then fade again.

Falerin, Tralin, and the player character, stand on the Dawnstone Keep walls.

Tralin: We are blessed to have your knowledge at our disposal, Loremaster, but can we truly count on your unrestrained assistance? The intervention of a greater power is most welcome, but carries... implications.
Falerin: Entropy slew my avatar, in my domain. That is a direct attack on me, and I am free to retaliate with *extreme* prejudice without causing trouble for Lorithia and The'Galin. Technically, it is self-defense.
Falerin: However, it is true that putting myself in a position where this can happen repeatedly has put *me* in trouble with my Caelestian colleagues. Trouble that in turn compromises my ability to remain here long.
Falerin: To put it plainly, there are far worse candidates for the position of God of Evil in my home realm, and now they have solid proof that I am not properly focusing on it. For now, though... This takes priority.
Tralin: ... That is extremely concerning, though we must indeed focus on the current threat. I'll do my part at once by closing as many doors as I can repair the enchantments of.
<<You>>: About that, King Tralin... Falerin and I discussed the details, and the need to fool an enemy we haven't even met, without being detected until we strike. It sounds odd, but we should leave the doors open.
Falerin: Per <<You>>'s interrogation of Karuna, as arranged by your patrons, it's clear that Entropy gleaned some knowledge of the origin of Erebus, and how to replicate it. However, his trail was ruined.
Falerin: He used the civil war to tie up your forces, and Karuna's attack to expose the tenth Orb, but didn't fully sabotage her. She must have been his final contingency, as I suspect he ignores one key detail.
Falerin: The real nature of the Beasts. To anyone short of an archmage's knowledge, the links to the Orbs would be obvious, but not their precise role in making the ritual faster, and subtler.
<<You>>: Entropy has worked so hard to distract the gods so that an apotheosis might catch them unaware. If we pull it off, making it look like a ritual to ascend is progressing slowly would be the perfect bait.
Falerin: Precisely. To that end, <<You>>, could you do me a favor? Track down the strongest elemental you can find among the stragglers of Karuna's forces. I have a use for such a specimen.

FOUR BATTLES: Elemental creatures, from the pools of parts 1-3. Dawnstone Path tunnel backgrounds. Heal every two battles.

Karuna and The'Galin are speaking in the house scene from the prior quest.

The'Galin: What would you have me do, Karuna?
Karuna: I'd get the punishment over with, honestly, so I have a hard time believing changing diapers is it. ...I suppose I'd want to know their motive, not just their methods. But you already know my reasons.
The'Galin: I do. And I know them intimately, because they were my own reasons to oppose my home, as a mortal. A history that I'm surprised to know you're versed in.
Karuna: I was an inquisitive child, and had cultured parents. Children have a way of seeing to your education, when you care about theirs. As I later experienced myself. Still, if you already know my reasons...
The'Galin: I know VERY well just how much evil I've dragged in my wake. You are right to question it, as you haven't seen the consequences of leaving it be. We've seen what Lore will become without being tested.
The'Galin: But along the way... To find one who believed in us, *understood* us without knowing us... And see her looking at me the way I looked at those who preyed on my own children... Shook me, I'll admit.
The'Galin: The test has weighed on us since its inception. We *always* wonder if we've gone too far... But as more of Lore's possible futures converge, we have premonitions of both a beacon of hope...
The'Galin: ...and being consumed by such evil as could surpass anything that you might have seen in the Network. Lauren, she made such a special world... And it's not only good people who see its potential.
Karuna: ...I knew there had to be a point to the test. And it had to be something grand, something so difficult to understand as a mortal, that it'd justify extreme action. But you can't have it both ways!
Karuna: So you see that the world is headed for one of these grim futures, and you make evil run its course faster to test if people will unite to oppose it. You're preserving free will, but intervening anyways!
Karuna: Maybe intervening to guide your people would make them too dependent. Fine. You're still crossing the line as an adversary! You test the world for being CORRUPTIBLE, not for being corrupt!
Karuna: I'm guessing that the only alternatives you gods see are wiping the slate completely clean, or controlling the world so tightly that you'd become tyrants. So you go for what will make us strong without you.
The'Galin: ...I suppose that this IS you all being strong. Strong enough to tell us you've had enough of the necessary evil. But suppose I have lost touch with the mortal perspective. You nonetheless had to fail.
The'Galin: See, Karuna, you fell further into evil as a mortal than I ever did before becoming the Devourer. Would you expect us to believe that you wouldn't become even worse as a goddess?

FOUR BATTLES: Elemental creatures, from the pools of parts 1-3. Dawnstone Path tunnel backgrounds. Heal every two battles.

In the prior scene, Karuna is now speaking to Lorithia.

Karuna: ...Wait, what? You... think I'm helpful? But you've been punishing me for my methods since--
Lorithia: I have suspected, for a number of cycles, that I have lost touch with the mortal perspective. Even as I feel the pain of my children, I have always struggled to *truly* understand them.
Lorithia: I love all of you dearly, Karuna, and I cannot bear to see you endure what awaits if Lore succumbs... Or if guiding it directly invites the attention of other gods from beyond, with aims of conquest.
Lorithia: Yet the idea has taken root that perhaps I cannot bear their current pain much longer, either. This cycle has been so very different... And not merely in its newer threats. It is the people themselves.
Lorithia: Oh! Oh crud, sorry! Sometimes I get carried away! My clerics often struggle to follow unless I speak ominously and avoid contractions. Divinity is at least one quarter theater, I swear...
Karuna: Wait, really? That... explains a lot about the temples. And paladins. Alright... I... Take one positive point from that. And I think I know why you're keeping me here now.
Karuna: You're... actually open to changing. Is that why you want my perspective?
Lorithia: There's a certain importance to making examples of would-be usurpers, so that gods from beyond don't sense weakness... But it needn't be so grand or brutal, and I recognize my role in your descent.
Lorithia: Before your atonement as a mortal... I'd have you educate a goddess, as only a fellow mother can. Born or ascended, it's very difficult for a god to change their ways. To even know if they must.
Lorithia: Suppose that you could see glimpses of the many futures. And that you only saw a handful in which your children don't go through terrible suffering, or become the ones who make others suffer.
Lorithia: But someone damages time so badly to cloud your vision. You've been working towards that brighter future, but can't see if it's on the right path anymore. As a mother, not a goddess, what would you do?
Karuna: I would do my best to teach them, and be there when they need me. I'd protect them from what I could, but if I couldn't be there for them as a deity, I'd risk trusting them. It's the whole point of having children.
Karuna: Here's a question for you, too. Since you're considering the possibility of being wrong, I should do the same thing. Suppose you're right. Say your test finally ensures that bright future... How will YOU atone?
Karuna: I did this because I figured nobody would relate, or listen. But you're... I know what it's like to have someone barge into the best laid plans and just... poke holes in the whole reason you believed in them.
Lorithia: It's a fair question, my child. I'll find a good answer. But you're not doubting your conviction... Only the solitude of it. You weren't expecting someone to stand up for you... and TO you. It's <<You>>, isn't it?

Karuna looks away. Fade to the next scene.

TWO BATTLES: As before, then heal.
BOSS BATTLE: Bound Greater Elemental

The player character joins Tralin and Falerin in The Deep.

<<You>>: I've found a few pretty tough elementals. I'm almost surprised to see more than one, with how rare they are back home. If those aren't good enough, I've got the binding gems from some I had to take down.
Falerin: These will do perfectly, <<You>>, thank you. Now, as I was saying, Tralin... I will not be able to fight for you. Entropy couldn't possibly uncreate me, but if I preserve my power to surprise him...
Falerin: Well, in his place, I would simply not show up. An open, empty Dawnstone Path is an obvious trap when he knows that a god's vengeance is waiting for him at some point. Even that is not the greatest risk.
Falerin: From what I understand, my power and that of the Uncreation Orb should NOT interact directly. I fear I might accidentally decohere into my various forms, and lose one of you as my attention falters.
Falerin: What I can and will do, however, is provide the perfect act for your desired trap. You will be hidden here in the Deep, where he cannot possibly sense through the primordial power within.
Falerin: Entropy has gone to great pains to ensure that even gods can't easily detect him. He only invaded my domain while it was damaged by Erebus, and has left no traces for years of wild changes to time.
Falerin: But even without knowing what to prepare for... now that we know he will come to us, I will show him the meaning of divine intervention. He expects the armies of a nascent god. He shall see them.
Tralin: You have done much already by securing our wounded, but that would be wondrous, Loremaster. What of <<You>> and myself? I can't imagine it will boil down to brute force alone in the end.
Falerin: You had this figured out well before I arrived, Tralin, do take more credit. You know exactly what must be done, I will merely provide the means. If I could speak to the Avatar for a moment?

Life appears over Tralin.

Life: What do you have in mind, God of Evil?
Falerin: Why, evil itself. I would see Entropy consumed by futility, struggling for my delight, and I believe I'll take a side of forbidden knowledge with my tea. You created the Orb to learn how to counter an uncreator.
Falerin: Let's put it to its intended use. I would like to develop a spell for you. Though I cannot interact with the orb myself, you would be able to suppress its use -- Albeit from a risky range. And, <<You>>?
<<You>>: Yes?
Falerin: Aren't you a little tired of staring down armies of elementals and magical abominations? I should think it's high time you commanded one.

Falerin raises his staff, summoning copies of the boss. The scene shifts to a distant view the Dawnstone Keep, as an elemental army begins spilling out of it.

Season of Consequences Finale

Introduction

A shadow stretches over the right side, then the view raises as Entropy approaches Dawnstone Keep.

ENTROPY: THERE IT IS. JUST WHERE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE... AND ALREADY USURPED.
ENTROPY: THE CRADLE OF THE WORLD, SPLIT OPEN. ITS STONE IS SHAKING WITH THE IMPENDING BIRTH OF A NEW GOD... AND THE PANTHEON HASN'T STEPPED IN YET?
ENTROPY: ARE YOU STILL SO BUSY WITH THE TATTERS I'VE MADE OF YOUR PRECIOUS TIME? GOOD. YOU DESERVE CONGRATULATIONS AS WELL, 'CHESSMASTER', FOR SETTING MY STAGE.
ENTROPY: FIRST, LET'S DO AWAY WITH THE WELCOMING PARTY.

Entropy's right claw enters the screen, with a gauntlet that has the Uncreation Orb artifact embedded into it and energy crackles around it.

ENTROPY: GRR. NOTHING.. IT FEELS LIKE DIVINE POWER ALREADY... OR AS IF IT WOULD CAUSE A PARADOX TO UNCREATE THESE ELEMENTALS.
ENTROPY: DID YOU WORK THEIR CREATION INTO THE START OF YOUR RITUAL ONCE I TOOK THE ORB? I CANNOT UNDO THEM WITHOUT ALSO SPOILING MY PRIZE.
ENTROPY: FINE. SIMPLE DESTRUCTION IT IS. YOUR GRAND WORK WILL TAKE DAYS, OR WEEKS. I WILL BE UPON YOU IN MOMENTS.

WAR!

War Zone: Same as the intro scene. Background Changes to the entrance at 25%. At 75%, the background changes to one of the tunnels and dragon entropy is replaced with the humanoid form. The tunnel has some fallen generic knights (Meant to be Falerin's illusions)

War Scroll: Entropy has reached Dawnstone Keep! After losing his lead on a technological method to create a god, he seeks to hijack the magical ritual that Karuna created! Will the Path resist him for long?

Faux War Mechanic: 25% progress per wave. Fully heal upon returning to the scroll. Entropy's lines at the hub change based on progress.

(0% to 50%)
ENTROPY: WRANGLING ELEMENTALS WON'T SAVE YOU, KARUNA. THE ONE THING BUYING YOU MORE TIME IS THIS CRAMPED TUNNEL. EVEN IN A WEAKER FORM, I'LL REACH YOU SOON.

(Human form Entropy, at 75%)
Entropy: Ugh. Not now, you apeling. ...What? When did I make it this far? Blasted shock traps must have stunned me long enough to lose track...
Entropy: But these traps weren't in the defenders' orders... They weren't even mentioned in court, or around him. Could Tralin know?
Entropy: ... No matter. Not much further... I can't let her get any more powerful. Not if this is going to start happening NOW of all times.

25%

In the streets of Deren, a line of insurgents is set to clash with Frogzard Knights and soldiers.

Insurgent: Get the green frog puppets out of the way!
Knight: I don't want to draw steel against my own people, but...
Insurgent: FOR DEREN! CHARGE!

Twig beams down in the middle of the scene before the charge can begin

Twig: No mowe of that, pwease! Awwight, you can come out now.
Insurgent: ...Wait! Get that little guy out of the way!
Knight: Protect that moglin! Don't let him get trampled!

Peace appears, layered over Twig, looking left.

Peace: Enough.

A calming light spreads from Peace.

Insurgent: Everyone stop!
Knight: Hold! Knights, soldiers, stay your weapons!
Peace: The agitators among you hold no sway where I walk. Now that I have taken away their bile and hostility... Look around you. Your other brothers and sisters have already listened. *You* can end this war now.
Peace: You have a difficult task ahead. While I am here to quell your fury, you will have no issue finding those who brought you to war. Those that desired blood, not resolution. Cast them aside, and work together.
Peace: Entropy has fooled the people and court alike. They have been turned on each other, that he may take from both.
Peace: These people aren't rebels. They think their king has been enslaved. These knights are not tyrants. Mercenaries have posed as both of you, to paint the scene of a slave-king's bloody tyranny.
Insurgent: ...I still feel angry... But I can listen to what they have to say.
Insurgent: I KNOW that Tralin went to defend the Brilhado... But... Yeah. I've been wondering if... maybe it was their people. Not the ones that attacked us. Maybe he didn't want them to get hurt.
Knight: Precisely. Just as we don't want you to suffer because of a war founded on lies. THAT is what Entropy has done. It's why he made each of you take his name -- To make you take the fall.
Peace: Good. It seems you were among the more reasonable skirmishers.

Exclamation mark over Peace as they turn around, noticing someone offscreen.

Peace: ...Oh? Is that who I think it is...?

Fade to black.

50%

Falerin and the player character are speaking in the Deep.

<<You>>: The army is playing its part perfectly. I've sent the fastest ones out in waves while defensive formations hold each access point. They're set to look like they're trying to seal the gates.
Falerin: Excellent idea. Would that we still had the Prime Orbs to go a step further. It would certainly make the trap more effective... Though it would also add more points of failure.
<<You>>: About that. What will happen with the Prime Orbs? They disappeared with the Beasts.
Falerin: As it happened with the Wind Orb, a new one will have to coalesce at the heart of each Elemental Realm. While they are meant to be in mortal hands during times of need...
Falerin: Perhaps it's for the best that they not be a factor while Entropy lives.
<<You>>: Fair enough. If he got his hands on all of them... Deren wouldn't see another dawn, and that'd just be the start. This is someone who managed to make sure Lorithia and The'Galin wouldn't get to help us.
<<You>>: I figured out how he might have hid from them, or made sure they'd look in the wrong place and time, but I still don't fully understand how he pulled THAT off.
Falerin: A god forces certain limits upon themselves when manifesting in another world. This, and my split attention, is part of how Erebus was able to slay me. But to strain greater deities in their own world...
Falerin: Something similar must be done on a far greater scale. Strange as it may sound, it IS possible to exhaust a god, or make it difficult for us to communicate. We gods are at war with Entropy as we speak.
Falerin: Not with the creature that we are presently luring here, but with the incredible damage he has done to Lore's timeline. What he does recklessly, with entire burning futures as collateral damage...
Falerin: Lorithia and The'Galin must undo meticulously, splitting their power and attention to save as many lives as possible. Even they cannot see but a burning haze in Lore's future until the work is done.
Falerin: I myself have focused on sparing you the worst effects. Thus you live in the timeline that we repair, not the fractured and chaotic waste that could be, and you are concealed from Entropy's memory.
Falerin: Wherever and whenever my Lorian colleagues are focusing, they are split into such a myriad of efforts that I imagine they can barely spare the attention for minor manifestations right now.
<<You>>: ...I knew the situation was terrible, but this is... Overwhelming. We have to stop Entropy right here. How is that spell coming along?
Falerin: Life is studying it as we speak. Should Peace return, they will be able to help a little-- It would be ideal to have the full host of the Avatar, to better manage the Deep's power, but my aid will have to do.

Lorithia and The'Galin pull Karuna aside in the orphanage room from the prior quest.

Karuna: ...That's why you can't just hunt him down, then. And you can't just go back to the point where he met me and track him from there... Without fixing Lore's timeline, which he's messing up as we speak.
The'Galin: Precisely. I would have long since destroyed him if not for that interference. Such is the danger of the orb. It can spread enough destruction through time to disorient even a god.
Lorithia: It's worse than just raw energy. The Faceless coalesced a magical engine for the residue of uncreation. It'd cause such havoc in contact with divine power that Tralin was tasked with containing it while it decayed.
Karuna: ...I could have stopped him. If I'd been faster. It's a good thing I warned <<You>>...
Lorithia: Absolutely. It's poetic justice, really.
The'Galin: I'd wager Entropy tried to turn on Erebus over being manipulated, which makes this a delicious irony. Through <<You>>, everyone Entropy manipulated is coming together to undermine him.
Lorithia: Erebus, Tralin, Falerin, yourself... And I believe there's one more victim. This reckoning belongs to all of you.
Karuna: Are you completely sure that Falerin's intervention will stop Entropy, then? If YOU can't help because you're split into so many points of the timeline at once, what can he do?
Lorithia: Falerin has his own responsibilities, and can only spare as much power as a demigod might have... For our matters. For self-defense? For *payback*? Oh, our Chosen will have a LOT of help.
Karuna: If you're that certain... Alright. Then what happens to me?
Lorithia: Now that you've given us the information we were missing... Well, we will still need help with the children until we have cleaned up after Entropy. But I've already decided where to send you.
The'Galin: Vandar. Somewhere where you'll struggle to revolt against us, but where a revolutionary heart will find exile and purpose to be one and the same. The roles have reversed throughout its history...
Lorithia: ...Well, we don't need to give a lecture. It's enough to say that the right woman in the right place might just keep history from repeating itself. We'll help you with YOUR children, mind...
Lorithia: Who knows? Perhaps you'll see $him again. Hopefully that won't come to blows.
Karuna: *Vandar*?! I'll have to teach the kids so much about being careful there... Entropy had better be getting knocked around by my traps right now, because I need to give *someone* a concussion for this.

Entropy reaches the Deep alone, walking towards a cliff edge.

Entropy: Out of the haze at last... What. This is The Deep, it *has* to be, but where is the energy...? There's no way you can be done. It doesn't look like you even started... KARUNA! Where are you hiding?!

Entropy stops at the right edge of the scene, looking off into the mist.

Life becomes faintly visible behind a column. The player character enters.

<<You>>: Prince Drakath... And here I was seeing Tralin's point in not suspecting you. Nowhere left to run, "Entropy".
Entropy: ...You should be less than nothing. A fading memory.
Entropy: No matter. Have you killed Karuna already, then? You must have, you couldn't hide the orbs from me. No matter, no... matter... I'm already here. I'll figure something out. But you? YOU?
Entropy: If the gods are really so sentimental that they'd waste energy on bringing you back when they should focus on me...

Entropy drops off the cliff, reentering in dragon form.

ENTROPY: THEN I WILL BREAK THEIR HEARTS ONE MORE TIME BEFORE THEIR REIGN ENDS.

Entropy raises a gauntleted claw, which crackles but fails to cause an effect. Focused on the hero, he doesn't notice Life.

ENTROPY: HOW ARE YOU INTERFERING WITH THE ORB?!
<<You>>: You've been very clever. Surely you don't expect me to gloat. No, you're too much of a threat. I'm putting an end to your schemes. *Now*.
ENTROPY: YOU'VE COST ME *ONE* ADVANTAGE. CONGRATULATIONS. YOU CAN NOW SETTLE FOR DEATH.

BOSS BATTLE: ENTROPY
Full heal

Life: Those threads of uncreation mana are getting harder to keep up with...! If Entropy gets the upper hand...
<<You>>: He'll uncreate me again, I know! Here I go again!
ENTROPY: THERE YOU ARE. I SUSPECTED IT HAD TO BE YOU, FACELESS. BUT ONLY ONE OF YOU? JUST WAIT UNTIL I'M RID OF THIS HUMAN... NO WINGED APE WILL SAVE YOU, NO... COLD...

Twig enters, moving up to Life, and Drakath arrives next to the Chosen.

Twig: Hiyas! We found Pwince!

Twig is replaced by Peace.

<<You>>: Wait, Drakath?! Entropy looked just like you...
ENTROPY: YOU! HOW CAN YOU EVEN STAND... AH... *YOU* ARE THE REASON MY STRENGTH FADES.
<<You>>: What's going on here?
Drakath: Long story! Only just realized it myself. Diviara used the Cold to make me let go of my hatred... And Erebus interfered. I thought I'd given in and released that hatred... But it refused to release *me*!
ENTROPY: YOU'VE DISCOVERED OUR CONNECTION FAR TOO LATE. I'VE PLUMBED YOUR MIND OF EVERYTHING I NEED. WHAT YOU WERE TOO SOFT TO RECLAIM, I WILL AVENGE.
Drakath: I thought I was sick, or cursed. It was you all along. Spying on Tralin through me. <<You>>, let me help. If I can get one good hit in, I could use our connection to weaken him as he did me!
<<You>>: Prince, you look like you can barely stand...
Drakath: I'm stealing back enough strength to fight! Let me finish this.
ENTROPY: POOR, DESPERATE VESTIGE. I DON'T EVEN NEED TO UNCREATE YOU. *DIE*.

Checkpoint with gear locker. Fleeing returns the player here, with the option to retreat from the quest. Options:

Fight Beside Drakath: Drakath has fainted whenever Entropy raged, and grown stronger when the dragon rested! He can exploit that connection to weaken this dangerous enemy for you! (Normal fight. WARNING: Dismissing Drakath increases difficulty!)
This option adds the Drakath guest. Fleeing, dying, or winning the fight, removes him.
Fight Alone: Drakath looks wounded and tired. Entropy must have been draining more than the power they unknowingly shared. Buy him time to build up strength and strike when it counts! (CHALLENGE MODE)

BOSS BATTLE: ENTROPY
(Final version)
Full heal

After the battle, the player character leaves Entropy staggered.

<<You>>: Drakath, NOW!

Drakath runs in to stab at Entropy. Entropy tries to raise a glowing right claw, instinctively protecting himself with the orb. The strike goes through Entropy's claw, sending the Orb flying off the cliff.

Life: I can't reach it!

The orb touches the green energy in the background and is violently consumed. As the reservoir of energy is annihilated, a green flash covers the shaking screen.

ENTROPY: NO!

Cut to a view of Lore from space, with auroras spreading all over it.

The player character and Drakath are left alone in The Deep, in front of Entropy's unconscious body. Falerin enters behind them.

Falerin: Is everyone alright?
<<You>>: I think so. What just happened?!
Falerin: ...I believe that the Orb was hurled into The Deep while Entropy was trying to summon all of the energy he hadn't unleashed yet. Creation and Uncreation mana don't cancel each other out. The reaction is...
Falerin: Violent. Very violent. The Orb is gone, and the Deep was almost destroyed in the blast. I barely managed to protect you all... but I couldn't contain the Creation mana as well. It burst out into the world.
Falerin: The best case scenario... If it somehow reached the ley lines despite this place being cut off from them... I don't know.
Falerin: I understand the phenomenon, mind, but it's unpredictable. Creation mana driven out of control, flowing into the world like this... It could cause intense magical events for years to come. As to what exactly...
Falerin: It depends on how well each ley line filters the magic. Wild, irreversible changes throughout the world could just as easily lead to beneficial effects as they could unleash terrible dangers across Lore.

Entropy's eyes open.

Falerin: Ah. You're conscious. Good. As I recall, you killed my avatar. Entropy, do me a favor. Imagine what a God of Evil's retribution must be like, when they have to make it quick. How terribly painful it must be.

Falerin moves over to Entropy.

Falerin: Do you have a mental image? Good. Don't bother screaming. I won't give you the satisfaction of final words. Instead, let me show you how your imagination really cannot do my wrath justice...

Entropy stiffens, then carbonizes and disintegrates. Tralin and Twig enter from the right.

Tralin: That was... grisly. Definitive, though?
Falerin: A thousand times over. Though in truth, he deserved worse. Entropy had hurt and killed those dear to me like few others. He also put me in a position that the Caelestian pantheon will not tolerate further.
Falerin: My apologies if anybody present was eager to do the honors, but I could not wait any longer... Killing him had become a diplomatic obligation of sorts. ...Ah, but that's a matter for later. How are you two holding up?
Drakath: I... I don't know. A burden is lifted, but I don't know what to do without it. I can still feel hate; I hated Entropy. But that all-consuming hatred that Entropy was? I didn't let go of it willingly. I was made to do it.
Drakath: I know that emotion was manipulated as well, but... It started with my choices. I *know* I've done wrong. Then I was enslaved, and killed, and freed, and bound again... Over and over again, and I...!
Drakath: I need time. Now that I'm finally alone in my own head... I need time to figure out what to feel responsible for. How to handle gratitude for one I vividly remember killing me. I'll... manage. How about you? Falling over yet?
<<You>>: I'm alive for now. Glad you're on the road to feeling like yourself again. It'll be difficult, but we'll be there for you. I feel like the future isn't hanging from a thread anymore. But I don't know what kind of life awaits us now...

Splash screen with the words THE END, with a nearly invisible IS JUST BEGINNING showing up for a moment before cutting to the shop.

Hub Dialogue

Greeting

Standard:

Robina: You'll be able to hit bullseyes with your eyes closed, I can tell. In the meantime, are you here to practice or hang out?

Level 105 and class mastered:

Robina: Well then, look who came to see me practice! Come on in, let's get some arrows and memories flying.

Class Quests

If Class level = 0

Robina: Hello! Welcome to my range. I heard you were looking into taking up archery for your adventures. Did my invitation pique that interest?
<<You>>: You shot your invitation into the notice for the Guardians' archery course. From inside their tower. While I was reading it. If nothing else, I know you're bold and a really good shot.
<<You>>: Is that how you invite all students?
Robina: Only the ones named <<You>>.
<<You>>: Well, that's flattering. I think.
Robina: Don't get me wrong, I think the Guardians have great tutors. But you're not just looking to learn to hold a line, shoot from a wall, or take up war archery. Fighting out in the wild takes very different skills.
Robina: I wanted to make sure you'd learn what works out there. I can teach you to shoot, sure, but I can also teach you what to do when things go wrong while you're nocking an arrow, loading a bolt, and so on.
Robina: Because things WILL go wrong sometimes. Spells, elementals, enchanted armor, great beasts, they can mess up your shots. You won't find much better than a Ranger to prepare you to deal with that chaos.
Robina: So, are you interested?
<<You>>: You bet.

If class level is 1 through 4:

Robina: There's the star pupil! That's enough practice for now. Let's get out there and put you through something educational.

Class level 5:

Robina: Looking to reminisce over old training stories? Sure thing.

Class Gear

(After closing the shop)
Robina: I've found and fixed up a good amount of beginner gear over time. Hopefully you can make some of it work for you.

Master Archer Gear

(Requires level 105 and maximum level in this class)

Robina: It's nice to see you at the range, <<You>>. I'm glad you made time to visit.
<<You>>: Hey there, Robina. I'm surprised these targets do anything for you, with all the crazy things we've been dealing with. I guess you wouldn't be the archery master if you didn't practice all the time, though.
Robina: Exactly. There's always something you won't have time to practice while adventuring. You can't let your body forget hard-earned lessons. I'm glad you still get it. Speaking of which, I'm not *the* master.
<<You>>: What do you mean?
Robina: You're practicing all the time too, in your own way. And you're way above the simple tricks I taught you back when you were just starting out. You always use the basics, but you've made your own style.
Robina: You're a master Archer now. And since I thought you should look the part, I had something commissioned for you. Here, take a look.

Text box next to the last bubble and the shop button:

quote:

Master Class armors are high level armors with a unique style. They're not a replacement for higher tier classes, but elite standalone armors with upgraded copies of a few skills from the original class. A Master armor isn't a class, but a powerful reward for mastering the original class and reaching a high level-- Revisiting the style and the strongest skills at your current power. The basic tricks of your original training are beneath an expert adventurer, but a hero like you can make the best skills shine again as proof of their mastery.

Master Archer features the Special Arrows and Per My Last Arrow skills, with no title requirement.

After closing the shop:
Robina: I hope that serves you well. Remember that you're always welcome to hang out here.

If requirements aren't met:
Robina: I've been thinking about putting some better gear together for a while, but I haven't had time to figure it out. Stop by my shop if you need other gear for now, but we can talk about this later.
Popup: The Master Class shop requires a fully leveled base class and a level 105 character

Become an Archer/Restore Archer Title

Robina: I'm guessing you're tired of throwing swords around and want to practice being an actual Archer again? Let's do this, we'll make a master of you yet.
(Become an Archer/Back)
Robina: Alright! You're ready to be an Archer now!

Reset Levels

Robina: So you want to go through the whole training course again? Sure, I've got time for you. We'll find any bad habits or rust and shake them right off. There's no backing out of starting over, though. Ready?
  • Let's start over / Not right now.

    Archer Explanation

Robina: There's a lot more to being an archer than trying to rain projectiles on the enemy. Archery as an adventurer is a whole other world. If you thought leading moving targets and figuring out the wind was tricky...
Robina: Even though experienced adventurers wind up adding magic weapons to their tricks, you still need to have a whole new set of skills.
Robina: Archers out there have to learn to be constantly aware of how their shots will be affected. You need to learn to shoot all manner of different foes, a lot of which are too tough for different projectiles.
Robina: You have to keep it together and line up shots when you need cover, when you lose sight of your target, when your allies run into your line, and when dealing with different wild or magical enemies.
Robina: All while knowing that something WILL get too close to shoot sometimes, and it's up to you to figure out what to do when it happens. I favor knuckles, myself, but I digress. All of that starts with one skill:
Robina: Staying calm and paying attention. No matter how chaotic it gets. Master that, and you might just have the makings of a full blown Ranger.

Text box next to the last bubble: Text box next to the last bubble: Archer is a beginner class with an introduction to defensive mechanics. Low level Archers should strictly use Ranged weapons and focus stat points on DEX. Master Archers use a Fully Defensive lean, and should ideally use bows.

Robina: It looks like you're a good shot, but the only good place to develop the skills and attention you need is right where you'll need them most. So, it's time to do what you do best, but my way.
<<You>>: What are we going after, then?
Robina: We'll focus on problems making life harder for the smaller, poorer communities. There are three main threats that keep them from building up and fending for themselves, and they need our attention.
Robina: The first is bigger creatures. Monsters have been migrating east for many years, threatening people and forest creatures alike. Marauders cast out by giantkind and others make just as much noise.
Robina: If you thought troll barbarians sounded like trouble, we've got a few dozen bandits of our own for every one of them. That's the second problem, and it's a fast growing one..
Robina: Bandits used to be very organized around these parts, until the Guardians scattered them. They've been forming big clans again, which makes them bolder... But also gives us figureheads to take down.
Robina: The third... Well, we'll get to that one. For now, have a look at these bounties. Let's consider them your exams. It'll be fun! And dangerous. And dirty. But mostly fun.

From the Rich to the Poo (Level 5 quest)

Robina: I'm running out of tricks to teach you, <<You>>. You're figuring some things out before I have a chance to explain them. We've got to test your timing and draw speed against multiple threats, though.
Robina: I've got just the occasion in mind for you to learn to track your targets for consecutive shots. It's time to get to work on that third menace I'd mentioned.
Robina: There was a great tragedy before you came to Battleon. Many people lost their homes - Lost everything. They made their way here to start over. A lot of people became heroes back then. Sacrificed...
Robina: ...Sorry. Those were dark times, but there were always those helping. Unfortunately, there were also people who had every chance to help and did worse than nothing. People like "Baroness" Odeille.
<<You>>: I've never even heard of a barony around these parts.
Robina: Right. She's an old noble. Milked her grieving widow reputation for everything it was worth to get people to think her donations to the Guardians made her better than her late husband. Then trouble came.
Robina: When calamity was at her doorstep, she had the resources to transport enough people and food to keep a village afloat. But no. She saved her GOLD, and posted guards at her home.
Robina: Didn't want anyone to squat there for safety before she came back. And now she's throwing that gold around to try and buy farmland around Battleon, after driving farmers out of business herself.
Robina: Bandits are going to have their eyes on that trade, and they've already been hitting farmers so badly that they can't get their manure to the fields. I say we solve three problems with one shot. Or a lot of 'em.
<<You>>: Bandits, manure, and robber barons? Oh, I have GOT to see what you've got in mind.
Robina: Fair warning, I did tell you that this was going to be dirty work. Let's go.

From the Rich to the Poo

    Archer Level 5 Quest

A caravan with a fancy central wagon is stopped at a forest-side trail that has been blocked by a stuck, overly stacked dung cart.

(From the curtained window) Baroness Odeille: And the ones responsible for this miserable stench aren't anywhere in sight?
Guard Captain: No, ma'am. It looks like a wheel got stuck and the iron coupling broke when they pulled at it, so they must've gone to get some tools.
(From the curtained window) Baroness Odeille: There will have to be some proper transports as soon as these people are out of my hair. Well, if you're sure this isn't some fit of mischief from the farmhands, get it out of the way.
Guard Captain: This looks like a real accident. I wouldn't put it past actual bandits to take advantage, though. Ugh, let's move it before my nose scrunches up into my brain.

Robina and the player character are tracking through the woods.

Robina: This doesn't seem right... There are too many tracks for the farmers, and it doesn't look like the horses were taken back where they came from.
<<You>>: Ah nuts, they're about to get going, too. Whoa, I hear a lot of movement.

The farmer falls from the tree.

(offscreen) Bandits: I told you! When bait falls on your lap, go fishing. Get in there!

Robina: Ah crud. Stick to the plan! Hit the bandits and then work on the distraction! I'll help the farmers, deal with the others, and then help you.
<<You>>: Wait, I'm alone for the distraction? Oh boy, I'll have to be fast.

Back to the initial scene. Bandits enter from all directions.

Guard: Gah, I knew it. Had to get a stench strong enough to mask your own, eh? To arms!

FOUR BATTLES: Outlaws. Heal every two.

Only the main guard remains standing. The player character enters.

<<You>>: Whew, that's the last of them. Hey, can you still move?
Guard Captain: Lords, I'm going to hurl again... Alright, I'm done being nice. One last bandit left. Let's get this over with before I remember my dinner.
    <<You>>: Hold up, I'm not a bandit!
Guard Captain: You're in the thick of an ambush, and you sure stink like a bandit!
<<You>>: Everything stinks here, you dilwod! I've been trying to help-
Guard Captain: Stop talking and fall over!

    BATTLE: Guard (2)

    Full heal.

    BOSS BATTLE: Guard Captain

The captain is now knocked over as well.

<<You>>: *sigh* That saves me work, at least. Aaand she's still dealing with the other bandits. Alright... here but for the grace of the gods go I.

    Fade to black.

    Guard: Oh sweet mercy!
    Bandit: Run away!
    Bandit: IT'S IN MY EYES.

After some time passes, the wagons are now thoroughly soiled with manure. A voice can be heard from the formerly-fancy lead wagon.

Baroness Odeille: How disgraceful. I'll be taking my gold somewhere where the commoners don't leave brigand-riddled roads blocked.

The farmers enter from the right.

Farmer: I want to say good riddance, but people are going to be mad at that deal not going through. Oh, you there! Thank you so much for helping!

Robina and the player character enter from the left.

<<You>>: Don't mention it. Is everyone okay?
Farmer: We'll be fine now. We've still got to get this to the fields, though... Not that we're going to make it in time for the day's work now.
Robina: I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. The roads are clearly not safe today; you should go back while we go alert the guardians that bandits were hiding near the outermost farms.
Robina: Make sure nobody got roughed up too badly, then check your cart. Wouldn't put it past those bandits to break it for a laugh.
Farmer: Oh, that'd be mean. Alright... I don't like being a day behind, but you've got the right idea. See you around!

The farmers leave with their cart.

Robina: The switch went well, right?
<<You>>: Everything went as you asked. Except the part about you helping me.
Robina: Yeah... Heh... Sorry about that... You passed with flying colors, though!
    <<You>>: What held you up?
Robina: Someone had to keep the farmers' eyes away from you so they wouldn't notice the surprise...
<<You>>: You were back there, keeping the farmers hidden for that long?
Robina: Well, I had to evaluate your aim, too! ...Alright, alright, I was dying laughing! You got me!
    <<You>>: Not yet I didn't!
Robina: Oh, you're not throwing anything at me.

    Robina leaves.

<<You>>: Get back here, you! I'll need to bathe for a DAY!

The player character follows. Fade to black.

Many adventurers start and end their careers by meeting Blackhawke. The gruff, unkempt mentor turns down a lot of would-be adventurers, often just from hearing the reason they want to learn to do battle. Pupils are perpetually exhausted and confused by his... unconventional methods, but those that don't flunk out go on to become some of the best fighters out there. Hearing about this, you have to know what it's all about.

You're handy with a weapon, but it's a tough world out there. Whether you're just getting started, or adding melee combat to your existing repertoire, your career of professionally getting into trouble would look a lot brighter... If you can get Blackhawke to make time for you.

<<You>>: Well, I do want to get better at fighting people too, but... Fair, it's not like we've got a member of every species to practice with.
Blackhawke: Exactly! But wouldn't THAT be something? An all-species fighting club. If you can use your head, you're invited to bash ours. Eh, not good at pitches. I'll figure it out some day. Anyways, it's simple.
Blackhawke: I know you've got talent, and if you already know I'm the guy to get a new head basher's adventuring life started. I'll show you what it's all about, and If my method works for you, keep coming along.
<<You>>: Is your method going out and picking fights?
Blackhawke: Basically. ...What? It's not like there's a shortage of things that need a pummeling. You need to experience *why* different gear works for different fights, not just hear about it. Let's go.

If class level is 1 through 4:

Blackhawke: I'm a businessman, <<You>>, and the Blackhawke family venture is whipping adventurers into fighting shape like nobody else can. So. Let's get down to business.

    Class level 5:

Blackhawke: We've had some good times. I'm not much for weepy reminiscing, but the stuff we got up to? Solid gold. Here, have a hot mug and let's share some memories.

    Class Gear

Blackhawke: I'll cover survival gear for lessons, but if you want some tools of the trade that you can take with you, I've got some stuff for sale. You find a lot of fixer-upper gear out there.

    Exiting the shop:

Blackhawke: You'll put together a better kit over time, but feel free to come back while this is still useful. I'll always keep some stock handy for you.

    Master Fighter Gear

(Requires level 105 and maximum level in this class)
Blackhawke: Hey there, kiddo. Long time no see. Don't suppose you hit your head really hard and need to take the basic lessons all over again.
<<You>>: You taught me a little better than that.
Blackhawke: So I did. Can't take much credit, though. I've been keeping up with all the crazy stuff you get up to, when I'm not around to see it myself. You took my lessons and ran with 'em. Just kept getting better.
<<You>>: I've learned a lot, sure, but there isn't a single trick out there that comes up more than the basics. Sure, there's some magical weapons that need their own technique to wield, but outside of that?
<<You>>: It's practice that keeps me alive a lot of the time. Whenever something new pops up and nothing I've been doing works, having something to fall back on lets me think on my feet and come out ahead.
Blackhawke: That's exactly right. I'm even more glad you're visiting now. Saves me a trip. See, there's a bit of a family tradition my pops passed down, for when your kid's all grown up and turned into a master.
Blackhawke: Me, I'm not much for kids of my own these days. Wouldn't ask them to take up the family business anyways. But I don't think pops would mind one bit if I gave this to you instead. Here, take a look.

Text box next to the last bubble and the shop button:

They're not a replacement for higher tier classes, but elite standalone armors with upgraded copies of a few skills from the original class. A Master armor isn't a class, but a powerful reward for mastering the original class and reaching a high level-- Revisiting the style and the strongest skills at your current power. The basic tricks of your original training are beneath an expert adventurer, but a hero like you can make the best skills shine again as proof of their mastery.

Master Fighter features the Second Wind and Overwhelm skills, with no title requirement.

    After closing the shop:
Blackhawke: Don't worry if this gets too torn up out there, I can fix up a new one for you if you can get me some materials and gold to cover the artisans' fees.

    If requirements aren't met:
Blackhawke: You're not as green as other apprentices I've had, kiddo, so you could handle some better gear. But before we look into the really special stuff, we'll need to get some experience in your ledger.
Popup: The Master Class shop requires a fully leveled base class and a level 105 character
    Become a Fighter/Restore Fighter Class

Blackhawke: So you want to focus on training with me again? Sure thing. I'll spread the word that you're my student, that'll get you in so much trouble that you'll have plenty of practice material to get caught up.

    Reset Levels

Blackhawke: Now that's what I like to hear! There's no shame in having a good ol' review. It's great for your skills. My best students have all taken it from the top at least once. Got rusty, or had an injury to adapt to.
Blackhawke: Besides, I've gotten a lot better myself since my last generation of students. Ready to start over? There's no shortcuts if you go for it, we're going back to the start and doing the whole lesson again.
  • Let's start over / Not right now.

    Fighter Explanation

Blackhawke: I don't have to explain what a fighter is; it's in the name. But, yeah, you've got a point. I do things pretty differently, it's worth breaking that down before I just drag you along.
Blackhawke: I'll teach you forms, exercise, all that and the usual routine. That's VERY important, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise, kiddo. If you want to be good, you'll NEVER stop doing those.
Blackhawke: But I'm going to get you some practical experience while we do it, to make sure you don't build an ironclad habit and THEN start running into critters and conditions that it doesn't work out for.
Blackhawke: So a fighter from MY style learns how to work with the exceptions before they're too set in their ways. Different people already have different moves. Different monsters? A whole other world, kiddo.
Blackhawke: We've also got to get you used to long battles in awkward places. Caves, swamps, heights, if you try to move the same way everywhere, you'll pass out before you even get in a fight.
Blackhawke: Learn that and you'll be able to steadily turn almost any fight around. So we're going to get out there and get in all sorts of trouble. Then you'll take notes. I'm no scholar, but it's good for your memory.

Text box next to the last bubble: Fighter is a beginner class with an introduction to warrior mechanics. Low level fighters should strictly use melee weapons and focus their stat points on STR. Master Fighters use the riskier Full Offensive lean.

If Class level = 0, play this dialogue when clicking on Fighter Training. Otherwise, skip to the scroll.

Blackhawke: Alright, are you done packing? Yes, no, it doesn't matter, we're going out now. I've got to teach you to fight when you're unprepared too.
    <<You>>: Wait, what?
Blackhawke: What, do you think real enemies are going to politely wait while you take half an hour to doff plate armor and even more time to change into something else?
Blackhawke: ... Don't answer that. Anyways, here's a present for you. I've got a notebook for you to keep a journal of our lessons. Wizards use this real resistant paper, Warlic goes through CARTS of the stuff.
Blackhawke: It's the one crutch I'm giving you, kiddo. Take notes of what we're up against, and we'll go over what you learned afterwards.

An Axe to Grind (Level 5 Quest)

Blackhawke: I'll be honest, kiddo, you've just about outgrown my lessons. Especially with all that you get up to between lessons, you're racking up the kind of experience others take years to achieve.
Blackhawke: For now, though, there's one more lesson I'd like to see you handle. Just had a convenient opportunity for it land on my lap, too; I got a message through Yulgar just now that you might be interested in.
Blackhawke: There's an old friend of mine stopping by, name of Zhilo. Calls himself the Axemaster. We used to roam together a long while ago. Fighting monsters, taking bandit bounties, getting into brawls...
Blackhawke: You know, the usual light weekend stuff. Haven't heard from him since we had to stop.
<<You>>: You sound like you had a lot of fun with him. Though, I've never heard of him, and neither of us have run into him... Did he have to take a break or something?
Blackhawke: Heh. Nah. It's a little more complicated than that. You're more of the helpful type of adventurer. I was a little more specialized: Find trouble, beat up said trouble. No socialization involved.
Blackhawke: More time to work on my skills. Zhilo was even more single-minded. Never cared for variety. He designed an axe for tough hide and focused on becoming the best warrior he could be with it.
Blackhawke: We were best buds, along with Galanoth, but he was all about the frontier life... And I had to stay here. My pops had passed away. I took charge of his apprentices, then just sort of kept finding more.
<<You>>: I'm sorry to hear that.
Blackhawke: Don't be. He went out the way he'd have wanted to. Pa and I weren't much for words, and weren't on the best of terms, but we knew we cared.
Blackhawke: Anyways. Zhilo's stirring up the local fighters, and that'll help me set up a test about chaotic fights. Facing groups, long bouts... It'll help to have it all in one place. Let's go see what he's up to.

An Axe to Grind (Fighter Class Quest)

Sif-Hu, a partially armored Drakel, awaits at the now crowded combat practice area of the training camp. Blackhawke and the player character enter.

???: Blackhawke! Long time no see. Brought your newest pupil to Zhilo's "party"? Or are you two here to mop it up?
Blackhawke: Jeeze, Sif-Hu, you look tougher every time I see you. You're making me look like a slacker here. A little bit of both, probably. <<You>>, you know Sif-Hu already, right?
<<You>>: ...Not by name. Or by voice. Nice to properly meet you -- I don't think I eever heard you say a single word in all that combat practice.
Sif-Hu: Hah! Well, they don't pay me enough to talk. I'm there to help the lot of you practice. If they want me to put on a show, they'll need to shell out a lot more gold. Or Uldor's going to have to call in another favor.
<<You>>: Just what kind of favor gets a guy like you to move to Battleon to get wailed on by adventurers all morning?
Sif-Hu: Ah, that's a long story. The gist of it is that I'm from a place in Vandar where people have some violent ideas about this place. My family bought into that nastiness. Couldn't get through to them. I had to go.
Sif-Hu: Turns out my daughter had a change of heart. Uldor had a vision about her trying to leave, and helped me get her out through Rhubarb. She's an adventurer now. Right mean with a sword! Or a lot of 'em.
Sif-Hu: Anyways... Care to handle this Zhilo business? I don't mind sticking around to make sure these kids keep it clean, but this party's way behind schedule, and I have to have lunch some day.
Blackhawke: Yeah, we got it. Don't got all day myself... When did Zhilo start acting like some celebrity, anyways? Alright, <<You>>, there's one reliable way to make an overcrowded fighting ring disperse.
<<You>>: I get the impression I'm about to break a lot of fight club etiquette.
Blackhawke: You just did! Might as well go all the way now. I'll keep the others off of you. I want you to find the four toughest looking hopefuls and take on them one after the other, don't stop to rest.
    <<You>>: Wait, what?
Blackhawke: You won't always get to stop and catch your breath every couple of fights. This is your chance to show me what you've learned: Don't go all out and get winded, try to save some strength. Go on!

FOUR BATTLES: Warrior-themed enemies, excluding male Umazen. 0.5 power, heal after the fourth. Enemies have penalized initiative and are renamed "Pit Fighter", with the description: "A rowdy fighter from an impromptu ring run by Zhilo that is definitely overstaying its welcome! You've fast tracked it to the semifinals, and the four top fighters are lined up to beat you up for it!"

With Sif-Hu gone, Zhilo greets Blackhawke and the player character.

Zhilo: Wow. Way to make an entrance, junior. Fashionably late, and sending your student to show everyone up. I'm impressed.
Zhilo: It's been a while! We have a little bit before the next fight, we have GOT to catch up. You still getting pulled around by the arm by that southern belle from the mountains, eh 'Blackheart'?
Blackhawke: Er... No, that went farther south after our trip to Thunder Mountain. Seeing what it's like nowadays left her a little... Off.
Zhilo: I'm sure you were the tact master and didn't mess that up one bit. Sorry, that came out mean. And it's not like I get to say anything. People only want me for my skills. Anyways! This is the new warrior? Hello!
    <<You>>: Hello. I'm <<You>>.
Zhilo: Nice to meet you! I'm sure Blackhawke told you all about me. It's all true, except the 'accidentally stealing an outhouse' story.
<<You>>: ...He didn't tell me that one, but now I'm curious.
Blackhawke: Don't be. Trust me on that one. You won't be able to do your business in town for a month if you hear it. Zhilo, we can hang out later, but what's all this? You didn't say there'd be this much of a mess.
Zhilo: I may have spread the word that the best warrior on this side of the river was stopping by and looking for talent. Didn't mean to inconvenience old Sif-Hu all morning, but this town has a lot of adventurers!
Zhilo: I was just looking for a good exercise and some interesting fights. I admit, I *could* get used to the attention... But then I wouldn't be focused. Anyways, I'm intrigued by the fruits of your labor here.
Blackhawke: Kiddo's got a heck of a future, yeah. I was hoping to use this little event of yours for something of an exam, but this was way too much of a mess.
Zhilo: ...Heheheh... My bad. Well, you scared off a lot of people by taking down the meanest looking lot, but you can help yourself to the rest. You could set up a class.
Blackhawke: Eh. No offense, Zhilo, I like a good scrap as much as the old days, but I respect my student's time a little more than that. From what I've seen, there isn't a single fighter left that could challenge...
<<You>>: You sound like you have another idea that I'm going to catch all the heat for.
Blackhawke: Absolutely. We can give all of them what they want and test your performance against groups in one go. Remember, wear down one target at a time, make them bump into each other. OI! OVER HERE!

TWO BATTLES: Pack of two enemies from the prior pool, heal, then pack of 3 enemies, heal.

Blackhawke: Whew, I almost broke a sweat sending the others packing.
<<You>>: ...Weren't you supposed to be watching me?
Blackhawke: I was. I said I ALMOST broke a sweat. And honestly, you--
Zhilo: That was really cool! Well done! ...And I'm sorry to interrupt, but it looks like we're about to have some crowd problems again.
<<You>>: Zhilo. We JUST dispersed them.
Blackhawke: ...What did you do, *buddy*?
Zhilo: I maaay have promised to fight whoever came out on top of the fighting pit. You know, show them the ropes before I left. You did go and round everyone up just now, though.
Zhilo: Which is really on me for getting carried away, but you were doing so well! You'd make a great adventurer!
Blackhawke: ...<<You>> IS an adventurer, Zhilo, and a really good one. This sudden famous warrior thing is so silly... I'd call it here, but this is the kind of thing that gets you ambushed by a bunch of glory hounds.
Blackhawke: It's really awkward to pit my pupil against an experienced specialist just for show, though.
Zhilo: Not to worry! I'll get my own star pupil to face yours, and we'll have ourselves a pleased crowd with no awkwardness!

    Zhilo exits stage right.

Blackhawke: ...Huh. Zhilo's taken to teaching adventurers? Maybe I've been a bit of a jerk. I wonder how--

Zhilo reenters, wearing a fake black-and-white moustache that matches his hair.

Zhilo's "Pupil": Hello! I am Milo the Axestudent! Pleased to beat you!

    Ellipsis animates over Blackhawke.

    Blackhawke: Beat him up.
    <<You>>: Yeah.

    BOSS BATTLE: "Milo the Axestudent"
Description: Violence is rarely the answer, but this time, it's the question. And the answer, on principle, is yes. Keep an eye out for when he prepares a big attack, and try to stop it!

After the battle, Zhilo is back to his regular form.

Zhilo: Well then, I almost broke a sweat myself! Unfortunately, I'm going to have to stop you there with a bit of a lesson of my own. You know how you're not supposed to fight on an empty stomach?
Zhilo: ...Don't get carried away eating either. Oh Lords, please tell me they don't remember me around the outhouses...

    Zhilo flees.

    Blackhawke: ...Serves him right.
    <<You>>: You have interesting friends.
Blackhawke: You could put it that way. I'm sorry that this went south every step of the way. I'll talk to Zhilo when he's done taking his bruised ego and funnybone to the loo. We can catch up then. For now...
Blackhawke: Even if the day got derailed, I think I've seen everything I needed to. Look, ki- Hm. Nope.
Blackhawke: <<You>>? I'm proud of what I see. By my reckoning, you're no student anymore. You sure don't need my lessons. I'd tell you to keep practicing, but I don't think you need the reminder.
Blackhawke: I'm going to keep an eye on your progress. I'm sure Zhilo will, too. In his own, newly weird way. If you keep going the way you are, you'll be an amazing warrior. In the meantime, it's my treat at Yulgar's.

    Introduction Splash

    quote:

Magic is a vast expanse of knowledge, the exploration of which consumes many ambitious minds in the pursuit of great feats. Most of its specialists have the luxury of years of scholarly preparation before being truly put to the test, but you -- Whether you had this benefit or not -- can't settle for one specialization.

To practice the many different spells that make an adventurer's life easier, you need a solid grasp on the ones that keep that life from being cut short. Plainly put, the spells that make other people and monsters fall down.

In Battleon, everyone recommends turning to Warlic to buy such spells. You can think of no better person to point you to a better education as an adventurer and...

    Mage!

    Hub Dialogue

    Greeting

    Standard:

Warlic: Sorry if I'm a bit frazzled, it's a busy time. Let's see what we have prepared for the next lesson, shall we?

    Master Class requirements met:

Warlic: Ah, hello there. Let me finish this quickly... You know what? No. It's not important. To be honest, traditional alchemy is mostly just my way of getting away from everything. I'm happy to make time for you.

    Class Quests

    If Class level = 0

Warlic: Good day, <<You>>. How can I help you?
<<You>>: Hello, Warlic. I've got a bit of a different request: Do you know where I could go to get some practical lessons as a battle mage?
Warlic: That's a little broad, but I can think of several places that suit your interests. Ideally, I'd say you should spend some time in Deren, but if you're not looking for a formal education... Hm. That narrows it down.
Warlic: There aren't many wizards who will offer you an informal education on destructive magic or adventuring utilities without a strict apprenticeship. Even with my recommendation.
<<You>>: Yeah, I understand. Not everyone would be interested in slowing down their own work for years to take on a random student for a dangerous field.
Warlic: Well, yes. It's rather difficult to keep up with your peers and projects while also keeping an overeager pupil from combusting. Those peers will also frown on one of them being an irresponsible teacher.
Warlic: That makes more informal arrangements a little tricky. But in your case... Hm. I could make a few lessons for you to practice. While not a full-blown mentorship, it'd set you in the right direction.
<<You>>: Wait, what? Yes, that would be great! It's just a surprise that you'd take the time for me. You must have so many things that you're busy with. How often do beginners get to learn from an Archmage?
Warlic: That's a tricky question in my case. My magical system works very differently to yours, with its own advantages and risks, so the usual definitions don't apply to me. The details are a matter for another day.
Warlic: However, I recognize another keen learner when I meet one. From what I've learned of you so far, you have a very good instinctive grasp of basic mana dynamics. We can work with that.
Warlic: Not everyone can buy a set of spell equations and try them out in the field with minimal study. With that edge, I can give you theoretical lessons and help you find expeditions to practice what you learn.
<<You>>: This sounds great to me, thank you. I can start whenever you want.

    Class level 1 through 4:

Warlic: Welcome back, <<You>>. How are your studies going? Do you need to review any arcane theory?

    Class level 5:

Warlic: You're too advanced for our old arrangement; I'll need to refer you to someone else for further arcane studies. However, I can make time if you'd like to reminisce for a bit. We might make a breakthrough.

    Class Gear

Warlic: You'll eventually be practiced enough to get away with some greater risks in combat, with enchantments designed to aid your spellcasting. For a beginner, though, survival and versatility come first.
Warlic: If you can provide the funds, I can prepare you a specialized outfit, enchanted to facilitate your practice. It won't be the fanciest of robes, but it's better to look like a street mage and survive than to die posh.

    Master Mage Gear

(Requires level 105 and maximum level in this class)
Warlic: It's good to see you, <<You>>. I know you might be here on business, but could you spare a moment?
<<You>>: For you? Of course, Warlic.
Warlic: I've been going through enchantment supplies for a while, and I found a spare outfit I had prepared for you back during your lessons. It got me thinking... It's like you just came back from that tower.
Warlic: And yet your understanding of magic has evolved so much. You're certainly a much more fearsome combatant with it, enough that I'd be wary Sila might regain an interest in your potential.
Warlic: But I'm proud to have been part of how you became such an accomplished scholar. If life ever gives you enough of a break that you can set up your own workshop, and you want to take that step...
Warlic: I'm sure that you have everything it takes to become one of the defining minds of your generation. Arcane talent may not seem rare to us, but mastery like yours is a sign of greater feats to come.
Warlic: ...Which is something I'm sure you're absolutely sick of hearing. You might instead treasure the chances for simpler times. But skill creates demand, and it's hard to pass for a simpler mage.
Warlic: So I spent some time improving the defensive enchantments on that outfit. It doesn't have the somatic acceleration or metamagical assistance of more intense spellcaster gear, but it will protect you well.
    <<You>>: Thank you, Warlic.

Warlic: Oh? Are you ready to focus on your studies? Believe me, I understand that an adventurer's life involves *many* lengthy interruptions, so it's no offense when you suddenly need to take a break.

    Become a Wizard

(Requires meeting the Wizard requirements and completion of the Mage class quest)

Warlic: You've overcome the challenges that limit most modern battle mages. Your understanding of the arcane is evolving enough that I'd like to refer you to a colleague for a much more specialized practice.
Warlic: I've been corresponding with Jackel Sano about your magical talent and the case of the Silver Tower. He's an expert in planar magic who maintains an outpost in the Ethereal Realm.
Warlic: He can confirm my theory that what you witnessed at the Silver Tower was the result of dangerous overlap with that dimension -- The kind we'd see if someone tried to force an access point open.
Warlic: Sano is interested in tracking down Varnak, while I try to find Xarymandias before any sinister influence does. He's also very interested in taking you on as a Wizard apprentice, if you'd like.
  • To the Ethereal Realm!
  • I'm not ready.

If the class requirement is met, but player level is too low:

Warlic: I'm still reaching out to colleagues to find leads on the case of the Silver Tower. A number of mages have had to fight Sila, bargain with her, or both. She's a frustrating one to be sure.
Warlic: It'll take more time to find any accounts that match her possessed behavior. What's even more frustrating than Sila's behavior is that nobody I know seems familiar with the name 'Varnak'.
Warlic: I'm also trying to get a hold of an expert in planar magic or the Ethereal Realm, but I'll need you to further your studies before I can bring you into that. Keep in touch, I'm always glad to see your improvement.

    If no requirements are met:

Warlic: How would you become a wizard? Through years of study, research, and practice, normally. Wizards are often solitary by necessity, since it's difficult to trust others with your life's work.
Warlic: There *are* academies out there if you're willing to spend your youth toiling away under watchful eyes, but apprenticeship under an expert matching your specialties is generally faster.
Warlic: You in particular are an exceptionally fast learner. Your field experience has helped you adapt where others get stuck. I have no doubt that you can become an exceptional wizard in the future.
Warlic: Once you're advanced enough, I'll help you find a mentor to begin your path as a wizard.

    Reset Levels

Warlic: If you'd like to reminisce about your training, I can set aside some time to revisit those days. Or do you mean that you'd like to review some basic lessons?
Warlic: That could be a good idea as well. The most experienced wizards frequently revisit their simplest spells. If not for refinement, to avoid dragging an error from early lessons to more advanced formulas.
  • Let's start over / Not right now.

    Mage Explanation

Warlic: 'Mage' is a very broad term. People commonly use it to mean any magic user. But then most people also think magic boils down to throwing "elemental energy" forward like a bucket of water.
Warlic: Formally, "Mage" means an arcane magic user at the beginning stage of their practice. Someone studying the basics of mana dynamics and spell construction, as well as the simplest applications.
Warlic: A spell is, in essence, a mental equation. Instructions for mana manipulation that you memorize, then go through in your mind while directing that mana.
Warlic: That's where guiding gestures and mnemonic incantations are useful; you don't need to remember every last detail and calculate everything mentally.
Warlic: A Mage, in this sense, is a beginner caster who strictly works with formulas for what their personal mana reserves can handle.
Warlic: A *battle* mage applies this to the most direct elemental spells, because they're the simplest to memorize and then use under pressure. You can unload a lot of power at the start of a battle that way.
Warlic: Be careful, though, because that comes with its own disadvantages. Forcibly rushing through your reserves will numb your magical system, and you'll have to fall back to other tactics until you recover.
Warlic: There are magical weapons for arcane specialists with no martial training, but those are typically not as potent as a skilled hand. If you're not trained with melee or ranged weaponry, mind that recovery period.
Warlic: Most arcane users stay at this depth of understanding, as learning through memorization makes it difficult to step back and understand WHY what you're doing works. I expect you'll do better than that.
Warlic: Once you're comfortable with what I have to teach you and get some experience under your belt, I can refer you to a peer with more time for a specialized education. Wizardry would suit you well.

Text box next to the last bubble: Mage is a beginner class with an introduction to defensive casting. Low level Mages should use spells, then strictly magic weapons when their MP runs out. Beginner mages should focus their stat points on INT. Master Mages sacrifice some active defenses to use the Fully Defensive lean.

Warlic I get a lot of correspondence about magical incidents. It feels bad, but I don't have time to deal with the majority of it, so I pass the less extreme or complex messages to my peers or the Guardians.
Warlic: Most of the time, an incident like this is actually a magical creature's threat or damage caused by magic users, and not actually a complicated magical phenomenon. These might be of use to you, though.
Warlic: I can set aside some incidents for you to test your skills against. Don't be afraid to fall back to other methods if your lessons alone don't bring you victory, but do take notes on how theory meets practice.
Warlic: Every time you've progressed enough in your studies to use another battle formula quickly enough for live combat, I'll find you a case to 'give it a spin'. A lot of it may seem simple, but who knows?
Warlic: You might just discover something I overlooked.

The Spinner's Shadow (Level 5 Quest)

Warlic: There's very little left for me to teach you as part of our arrangement, <<You>>. I must say, were I able to take a full-blown apprentice, I would be proud to have one as talented as yourself.
<<You>>: I'm very flattered. Your lessons have been a great help.
Warlic: On that note, there is one last incident I'd like you to investigate. It's a personal matter, but this situation calls for very specific conditions to approach it.
Warlic: It needs the hand of a very talented and observant mage, but most importantly -- an inexperienced one. A beginner with the keen eyes of an expert. The dangers are too great otherwise.
<<You>>: Those are some weirdly specific conditions, but I can see how they'd be the perfect test for me. What's the situation?
Warlic: I haven't been an ideal example of this, but a wizard's personal workshop is a very important place. A domain with very intricate defenses, prepared over a very long time, to let them research in peace.
Warlic: When one becomes unoccupied, or worse, falls... Other wizards tend to monitor it for incidents. I've suddenly become unable to do that with the Silver Tower of Xarymandias. A place you may not know of.
Warlic: Xarymandias was a mentor of sorts to me. He's a teacher who guides wizards in need, usually under the pseudonym of Brump. He helped me refine my method of spellcraft to make it much safer.
Warlic: The tower of such a knowledgeable mage is VERY secure. And yet, it was once raided by a Naga sorceress known as Sila. She supposedly wished to 'steal his power', and worked to invade his mind.
Warlic: This... doesn't add up. A wizard's power can't be 'stolen' or consumed. It's the product of understanding, not a bauble. But Xarymandias was still in grave danger. He collapsed his own tower upon her.
Warlic: Only the simplest spells give me a glimpse of the area, but those are also the most limited, and struggle with interference. Much like how my mentor mentioned only simple, modern magics deterred Sila.
<<You>>: That part doesn't make sense to me. How does someone who can get through a wizard tower's defensive enchantments and overcome their advanced spells have a hard time dealing with simple magic?
Warlic: It doesn't make sense as a matter of power. And by all indications, Sila should have had no problems with simple magic, but been foiled by the tower. If she's somehow back, I'd like you to investigate.
Warlic: You would be well-suited to stop her, at which point we can work together with other experts to find answers. Nonetheless, be very careful. If it gets too dangerous, flee the ruins and get in touch with me.
  • I'm ready!
  • I should prepare first.

Magic and the Meridians of the Mind
    By Xarymandias

(Skimming through this book on the fundamentals of spellcasting, you find most of it too simple to be of use. It's a breakdown of conventional theory and common knowledge for mages. However, you find a few passages of the basics where the author snuck some interesting notes for advanced readers.)

[...]The vast majority of magic users employ mana through what we call their magical system. This is not a physical or indeed visible structure, and requires specialized magic to visualize. Experienced readers will begin to find parallels to cultural concepts such as the Root and the Flow from Interregnum texts, as several cultures had remarkably close models to what modern divination magic can analyze. The parts common to all systems are:

    The Reserve
An internal well of mana with a capacity that varies greatly between individuals. The vast majority of magic feats are fueled from this internal reserve, as directly controlling external mana 'on the fly' is extremely difficult. A person's Reserve typically becomes more efficient through years of understanding and practice, as their grasp of mana and their own limits allows them to find their ideal rhythm.

Because of this, it is often associated with the lungs by cultures with a tradition of natural sorcery. A fascinating aspect of the Reserve is that it seems to contradict mana's accepted fundamental properties: If unused for long enough, the mana in a subject's Reserve becomes almost imperceptibly still until expended again. And yet, we understand mana to require far greater (Typically disastrous) events to stagnate.

    The Filter
At once the simplest and most delicate part of a person's magical balance, the Filter is what connects the system's other components to each other, as well as the Reserve to the world. This connective element acts as a dam of sorts: It allows ambient mana into the reserve during rest periods, and regulates how much flows into the Core during spellcasting. Those intent on becoming wizards, particularly those with a mind for dangerous field work, should make it second nature to be well in tune with their magical filters and know when to rest.

During ages in which the magical system was believed to be part of a being's physical organs, there was a curiously universal tendency towards associating it with the stem of the brain -- Save for the curious exceptions of ancient Darkovian vellums and Far North relics that depict an association with the heart instead.

    The Core
While understood to be the controlling aspect of the magical system, the sheer variety makes it the most difficult to visually analyze. Without the most detailed divination magic, we struggle to unpick the sheer density of this orb-like element. When a traditional magic user casts a spell, mana courses from the Reserve, through the filter, and into the Core, where its user converts the energy into the desired effect through the mental construct of their spell.

This is far from the only way to perform magic. There are many beings with innate magic powers, be it people whose cores develop such on their own, or those for whom magic has no such structure. However, as the most common, it has allowed us to observe a promising phenomenon: Studying casters with a lifelong specialty and those with exposure to certain magical disasters has revealed strongly defined patterns that parallel the position of certain leylines in the world during their lifetime. Perhaps we finally approach the understanding through which draconic works of pre-Elemental War times referred to magic as one's 'inner world'.

    And Pun-isher

    The Spinner's Shadow

    A Skies-Spanning Web

The player character cuts through hills to discover the pieces of a shattered tower have floated back into position and now hover in place. Light leaks through the cracks, and the sky beyond the tower has taken on a fabric-like texture with a lavender color.

<<You>>: ...That tower isn't silver or fallen anymore. The area's mana doesn't feel normal either... its elemental alignment is so weak. It might be best to study this from just a little closer and report back to Warlic.

    Beat

    <<You>>: ...Are those voices?.

FOUR BATTLES, heal every two: Energy elemental creatures, excluding Umazen.

At the tower's entrance, the player character advances through echoing words. The words rush through every time they speak, reading: "Aargh!" "Where is it?!" "Let go of me!" "Let me wake..." "Blasted webs!"

<<You>>: There it is again! The wind is getting strong, is that...?

    <<You>>: ...Screaming. From above.

<<You>>: And from the creatures, all around...

<<You>>: It's definitely loudest from above. ...I can't just back out anymore. It sounds like someone's in a lot of pain. Here's to hoping those traps are still disabled...

FOUR BATTLES. Heal every two, with the same pool as above.

In the tower's interior, Sila is initially alone, face downcast and staring through a spectral blindfold.

Sila?: He's not here... There is decay. Time. Too much time has passed in the material world. How long did you delay me?!
Sila: Long enough to start shaking you off, you fake... Aargh!

    A crackle animates over Sila.

Sila: Tighten... your webs... All you like... I know you're a failure now.
Sila?: I will find him again. If not through you, then through the next pact.

    The player character enters.

<<You>>: Here's where it's coming from... Wait. Are you Sila?

    (Simultaneously) Sila: Who goes there?!
(Simultaneously) Sila?: Who goes there? A wretch beneath notice... Or a keen illusionist?

<<You>>: You seem to be tied up in something nasty.

(Simultaneously) Sila: I don't see you, but you had better find a way to get this off of me or I'll make sure you go down with me.
(Simultaneously) Sila?: I see you. You had better prove more remarkable than you appear, bold one.
    Sila?: Test <<his/her>> worth.
Sila: No. You don't command me.
Sila?: I command enough of your magic. LEAD THEM.

FOUR BATTLES: Spider type monsters mixed with the above pool. Full heal every two.

(Simultaneously) Sila: You... might be useful after all.
(Simultaneously) Sila?: You're of no use.
Sila: Prepare yourself. You had better fight well, or I'll kill you before he can.
Sila?: Not directly. But you're discerning... You'd be a good pair of eyes.

<<You>>: Sorry, creepy voice, but you're not the only one who's been paying attention. The interference focuses when you make her cast. You're activating something in her mana reserves.
<<You>>: I wonder what would happen if they were exhausted?

(Simultaneously) Sila: Yes! Force him to spend it!
(Simultaneously) Sila?: ...There's enough power to strangle you before that happens.

    BOSS BATTLE: Sila, Possessed Sorceress
Description: Sila the Sorceress, a Naga of great magical talent, is struggling to break free from an entity that possessed her to attack Xarymandias! Your Mage spells should be able to confound its strange understanding of magic, forcing it to rely on her magic until she breaks free!

Outside the tower, Sila and the player character watch the sky slowly return to normal.

<<You>>: I'm sure that you need to recover, but if you'll pardon my bluntness... What in the world just happened?
Sila: Oh? You seemed to understand it quite well just now.
<<You>>: Er... Lucky guess? It's hard not to start noticing weird things when someone is speaking in two voices.
Sila: Hmhm... Putting up a wall now, I see. Well, I can tell you the story. But first, you have me at a disadvantage... How is that, and who are you?
<<You>>: I'm <<You>>. I was sent to investigate the tower's ruins so that the wizards could figure out a solution to whatever happened, but I heard the screaming and had to intervene..
Sila: Normally you would have been quite in over your head, <<You>>, but as it turns out... You were just what I needed. Xarymandias had something I very much wanted, but it would have taken ages to get in here.
Sila: In my search of a way to slip past his defenses, it seems I met my own match. A long-time ally... Or so I thought... also wanted something from Xarymandias. He managed to hide a binding pact from *me*.
Sila: When I arrived at the tower, he suddenly had command of my magic. I could understand -- Or feel him understand -- anything the wizard tried. I could counter ancient, advanced spells in moments.
Sila: ...Yet I was not in control, and couldn't do anything about much simpler spells from my own time. When the tower fell, I was pulled into the Ethereal Plane to recover. I regained some control when returning..
<<You>>: I'm not about to approve of stealing from Xarymandias, but it seems like we have a common enemy. Who is this entity that you used to be allies with?
Sila: ...Now that I'm myself again, I don't remember when I met him. I remember common interests, but not many conversations. You would do well to beware him. This creature's name is Varnak. And... <<You>>?
    <<You>>: I'll remember that... Yes?
Sila: Research matters more than petty moralizing, dear. I'm sure you'll learn this in time. So I take what I want, no matter who 'approves'. Because you're intriguing, and you helped me finish breaking free...
Sila: All I will take from you now is my leave. We'll say I owe you a favor, and leave it at that for now. However, Xarymandias is my enemy, and if you work for his allies... Then you will be as well, before long.
Sila: So you had best stay out of my way, my intriguing little wizard, or I'll tear down that wall of yours and lay you bare to such secrets as you won't forgive your friends for hoarding. Are we clear? Goodbye, then.
