Book 1 Revisited: Pre-Hatching!
Hey there heroes!

This week, we're heading back to Book 1 Revisited with some Timeline adjustments and quest updates!

Sepulchure's Flying Fortress and the Temple of the Four Winds have been moved to before Arachnattack! Arachnattack has also been quest-ified, and the Book 1 Timeline has been adjusted and reorganized!

You'll also notice a couple other updates and changes as well with regards to quest flow and the pre-Orb Saga Timeline, although only Sepulchure's Flying Fortress, The Temple of the Four Winds, and Arachnattack are the quests that have been updated this week.

Summary of changes:
  • BGM and text has been updated for the revisited quests
  • Soaring Theemis and Spidermancer now have minor boss mechanics.
  • The Wind Temple reward shop is now directly sells the weapons, instead of requiring Wind Seal Fragments. (The quest still drops the Fragments for use in Blacksmithing)
  • Spider Slayer weapons have returned with level 13 versions of each. These are not upgradable.
  • Though not Revisited yet, Spirits in the Inn has been added to the main timeline, taking the place of Haunted House. (Ash's other suggested advnetures, Willowshire and Sir Ano, have also not yet been revisited)
  • Haunted House has been moved before Vampire Tower on the Timeline (and on the same branch)
  • Ash and Twilly have had a number of different dialogue states added to help direct players where to go next. If you run into any issues with these, please let me know! (they were a headache to sort out)
  • The Bk1 Timeline and Timeline tracker have also been updated and should not have any issues (this was also a headache to sort out), please let me know if you run into any issues with these!
Also, please note that if you already completed Sepulchure's Flying Fortress and the Temple of the Four Winds, Twilly may not direct you to them, since they still use their same old tracker. You can still replay them from Ash, though!

So head on over to Book 1 Falconreach to check out the updated quests and Arachnattack!

Also this week, we have a new cosmetic item available for purchase!

The ArchMage's Hood is color custom to your character's base, trim, and element, and can be purchased for 400 Dragon Coins from the DC Cosmetics shop!

Also, a HeroMart update!

The 2025 Calendar is now available from HeroMart! Purchase it to earn rewards in your favorite Artix Entertainment games, including the Voicecatcher Artifact for DragonFable's Epoch class!

And that's all for this week! I'm back and relatively refreshed!

Current weirdness that players may encounter would be the Book 1 Timeline tracker indicating that Spirits of the Inn needs to be done. Current fix found would be to redo the quests of the Dragon Egg saga from the Temple of the Four Winds onwards before doing Spirits. Haven't really figured if shortcutting via accessing the relevant quests via the Timeline feature (e.g. Arachnattack) would have an effect as I did them from their intended quest givers. This will likely result in having to redo also every bossfight of the mainline wars afterwards up until the Pirates vs Ninjas war (up to you if you want to do the Extreme modes of those bosses) for the tracker to revert to fully cleared Book 1 (if you have already cleared the said Book).

And for all that is sane, before the executing the redo above, please clear your cache if necessary.

Helpful!

Great release, these Book 1 revisits are my favorites! Thoughts:

+The lore clarification in Wind Temple is obviously a big improvement; the words Order and Chaos are obviously much more loaded now than they were in 2007.
+The specification that some of the prophecies about Draco and Fluffy came true in the past or might come true in the future is interesting, but tmk doesn't affect any lore or story beats that are already in the game. But it has to be important if they went out of their way to add it, right? Loading on the Draco lore early in the game instead of towards the end of Book 3 in an unrelated questline makes more sense.
+Wind Temple weapons no longer being an obnoxious grind right at the start of the game is obviously also a big improvement. Especially with the modern exp curve, which would prevent players from actually being able to use these weapons before just outleveling them again.
+Arachnattack being condensed into a single quest instead of spamming wars at the start of the game is obviously a big improvement for clarity.
+vaal mentioned. cinema.
+An alternative version of Spider Slayer now means that the BiS anti-Bug special is no longer a 20 year old rare!
+Spirits in the Inn is finally on the timeline, which is good as this is both the first mention of Doom and the oldest portion of the innkeeper 'saga' that wasn't removed from the game 20 years ago. I wonder how much of this will continue to be filled out in the future?

-The dialogue for Sepulchure's Flying Fortress wasn't changed that much, and still has the protag already knowing who Sepulchure is:
quote:

<Character>: Sepulchure has that much dark power? Unbelievable! He's a far greater threat than I ever thought.
In the original context of the quest this made sense, as the protag's introduction to Sepulchure was in Frostval 2006. However, Frostval 2006 is obviously Super Non-Canon now due to how the rewrites/retcons have handled King Alteon's introduction and inserted AQW's Alteon/Valen/Lynaria backstory (which inserts a number of plotholes into both Books 1 and 3 but that's a separate can of worms). It doesn't make sense that the Hero already knows who Sepulchure is at this point in the story, nor does any extant content properly introduce him. Maybe the plan is to substantially rewrite War at See / The Irismancer, and then insert it before Flying Fortress on the timeline?
-The music that plays when the Flying Fortress first appears still doesn't loop :(
-Soaring Theemis is a pointlessly obnoxious monster; anything that makes you wait several turns before you can actually interact with it (which is absolutely the case here; you aren't resolving 200 Bonus at level 13!) is super unfun and time-wastey. Maybe it would have made more sense for this to be 80 All or something, instead of 200 MPM?
-The Judgement Wheel music being 'wasted' on an early-game trash monster like the Spidermancer is a bit of a weird choice
-Spider Slayer not being upgradeable anymore is a bit of a weird choice, as it's a BiS special (Spider Slayer outclasses the Spider's Kiss/ Embrace/ Trap weapons from much later in the game, as well as the Special Offer items Grove Tender and Neo Grove Tender) and the upgraded versions are still in the DM merge shop - as they have been for nearly 20 years. Thought maybe a better solution would just be making Spider Slayer (early game) the weaker version of the special, and Spider's Kiss/Embrace/Trap (later game) the stronger version of the special.
-Also, since Ash's dialogue is getting tweaked, it would make sense to re-introduce his removed WoX dialogue at some point - this is pretty important to both his character and his story, as well as AE's and DragonFable history.

Loved this release overall! These continue to be my favorites.

EDIT: Also, I'm not sure this line in Flying Fortress ended up being accurate to what actually ends up being the case over the course of the game:
quote:

Twilly: HE must have had his army of necromancers animate the skeleton. It's HIS flying fortress!
Sepulchure only actually has 6 necromancers in employ over the course of Book 1 (Noxus, Necromantress/Vayle, and the 4 clowns from Archknight) - there's no other allusion to him having any necromancers besides these six specific characters, and they even lampshade this by complaining about how overworked they are at the end of Book 1.
Noxus tries to train an army of necromancers for Sepulchure, but when he's defeated it's Sally who takes over the Necropolis, and she isn't shown or implied to be affiliated with Sepulchure in any way.

I think it makes sense for a Wind monster to be Evasive rather than tanky. Maybe it could be switched to BPD so you can still land glancing blows, but I think it's fine?

This is extra weird to me because the quest the upgrade materials ( Bag of Spider Cents) dropped from back in the day is still in the game, and just drops nothing. I think it would've made more sense to drop the base version (alter the level and stats to fit this new progression if needed) and then allow DA players to upgrade it further if they so wish.
This would be relevant for two reasons, one being the BiS special for Bugs, and it having free banking as a DA-only item. (They're not tagged as DA-only, but given that you need a DA to get Spider Cents, they should be) The upgrade requirements could also be lowered appropriately, of course.

Arachnomancer was balanced very well, I think. While my character continues to be below the intended curve (Which at this point I should fix since that shouldn't happen anymore), as a Warrior at least, landing the 50% stun still didn't let me safely beat Arachnomancer without potions, which are of course a part of the mechanics of the fight. Probably more optimization might've done it, but still.
This should hopefully teach players that potion use is NOT cringe, and that it's okay to use them.

I think turning this from yet another war into a quest was mostly a good idea too. (It would make it harder to reintroduce the DA-only quest in a place that isn't the Time Travel Fairy statue, which is bad and awful)
