EpicDuel Omega: Coming January 2013


A new game phase begins next month and tons of previews have already gone out. The purpose of this topic is to compile all those sneak peeks and for you to see what you can expect when the phase is released. Previews are generally posted here on the forums, or in the Design Notes and social media websites. We'll do our best to update this thread regularly and at a speedy manner as previews are made available to the public. Feel free to discuss, speculate and share your thoughts!

The Future of Weapons: Upgrading, Equippable Item Abilities and Requirements + Stats and Damage Model

Another major change coming to items in Omega is the ability to upgrade any item. As you level up, you will gain the ability to put more stats, damage, and defense/resistance onto your items, up to their maximum potential for your level. This effectively means that any item can be used at any level and will not be stronger or weaker than any other item at that level.

Strategy will not be removed in any way by this change, and now that items are more customizable than before, it should increase the number of strategies available. In the new system, the stats an item has are dependent on your level, and you can distribute them as you want.
Then as you level, the number of stats your gear can have increases, so you can upgrade them instead of having to throw them away and buy new gear.

* At level 10 I might be allowed to put 10 stats on a new gun I buy. I put 4 in Strength, 4 in Dex, 2 in Support.
* I keep fighting and end up at level 13. I now am allowed to put 12 stats on my gun.
* I can either buy a new gun and put 12 stats on it, or I can upgrade my old gun and put the extra 2 stats wherever I want.
* I can also redistribute the stats on my gun at any time, just like when I retrain my character's stats.

We have no plans to have any limitations such as this. The idea is that you can use any weapon for any build that you want.

Since the look of an item currently "tells" you what type it is (energy weapons tend to have energy-looking blades to them) this will be pre-determined on the item and cannot be changed. We want you to be able to know the type of damage just from looking at the weapon in most cases.

When you buy a weapon you will have the choice to buy it without any stats for a cheaper cost and upgrade them later, but most of the time you will just buy the gear with all the stats available for your level.

The current damage system goes away completely. The max damage a weapon can have is now tied to YOUR level, since gear will no longer have a specific "level" to it any more. Hard to wrap your mind around at first, but this just means that every Auxiliary will have the same maximum damage for a level X player. Doesn't matter what level it is right now on live.

Ooh, no sorry, I worded that poorly.

Primaries, Guns, and Auxiliaries will have different maximum damage at each level. Auxes are still planned to have higher damage than other gear types.
Hopefully I'm understanding what you mean. :P

There are already borderline too many stats flying around on items as it is.

Also:
Bots serve to give you a more tactical choice in what you bring to battle with their special ability.
Bikes deliberately don't do anything for you in battle.

We don't really want to push either of these into giving you more power than someone without them. :)

The Varium and Non-Varium Gap

One goal of Omega *is* to diminish the power gap between F2P and Varium players. We want to shift the gains given by Varium from granting overt power to giving new options and convenience. It can also grant things like cosmetic options, etc that we haven't explored as much in the past. We also don't want Varium players to feel a constant obligation to upgrade just to keep up. Instead, we want you to be excited about the loads of new options that you can play around with.

What this means is that Varium should get you what you want faster, and should grant additional awesome options, strategies, and builds that otherwise might not be available, while still providing awesome stuff to F2P players that you might have to work a little for. In the end, everyone should be better off with these changes.



NPCs

Today we wanted to go over some changes to how NPC fights will work in Omega. We want NPCs to fill the purposes of:
    1) training or testing builds

    2) gaining credits

    3) furthering missions and the storyline
They currently fill some other purposes that we want to move away from, including padding battle records, faction farming, and leveling.

Some of the changes are as follows:
  • NPC fights no longer count towards your battle record. We want the Leaderboards and your battle record to clearly reflect your PvP accomplishments instead of forcing players to farm NPCs to pad their win rates.
  • You can now fight NPCs an unlimited number of times.
  • NPCs will not give experience after level 5. This will allow new players to be eased into the battle system, but afterwards we want the focus to be on PvP. This also allows leveling players to get credits without continuing to level if they feel like they are falling behind.
  • NPCs will no longer give Battle Tokens or Influence. Since you can fight them without limit, we don’t want factions or players to farm them for Tokens or Influence. Again, we want the focus here to be on PvP.
  • NPCs will not give rewards if you lose. We don’t want people to purposely lose to NPCs over and over, so you will need to win to get Credits or other rewards.
  • Brainwashing is removed since it is no longer necessary.

Right now, if you mess up and fall behind on Credits, you can never catch back up until you hit the level cap.

If Omega comes, I want more cool and creative animations with equal and diverse balance in all classes. If that promise isn't delivered, I might give up buying varium... :/

Yeah, we also need new guns and auxiliaries, atleast f2p versions i am lvl 33 with a lvl 30 bazooka

As long as they implement more physical weapons. The game is over run with energy weapons.... Just look at Charbringer's blade, they sold out so fast!

Looking forward to this. I'd love to use the Azrael and other V-Day Weapons while remaining on par with current capped items. I'm sure people like JZaanu would be happy as well, being able to use something like Morning Star. :)

Xenii, that's why they are making stats and damage model. There will probably be cap for stats for x Level so you cannot just abuse stats by upgrading item; so it'll probably work like items are now, for example Dex and Tech lean, and some odd Str perhaps -> upgrading will focus on Dex and Tech but it may give you Str once in a while.
In case of weapons like Caden's Wrath, they may penalise the damage by a lot or do the opposite and lower the Tech boost for sake of higher damage so it won't be abused.

Also this probably means that weapon requirements WILL be gone. Why? Unless you make them scaled for every item, there's no point in keeping them since balance will be improved, enhancements will not make such a wide gap between players and Titan mentioned that Omega will bring more customization and less restrictions. Agility may also leave or at least be level scaled.

Looks like weapons may just become skins and I am completely fine with that Founder Armor for my peeps and Seraph armor for myself all you have to care about is abilities which most of them I couldn't be bothered with. Also I will get to bring Caden's Wraith back out of retirement

Why would Beta Weapons be a problem? If they remove requirements completely, it'll be as good as any other Rare Varium weapon, nothing else. :S

lets say you want platinum pride lvl 35 to upgrate it to lvl 36 (When it get released) I guess cuz is just 1 lvl diference you will pay less (100 varium for example) and for the lvl 25 you will need to pay 1100 varium for lvl 36, Things like that.
