Alina is really enjoying the critique on AQWorlds and has asked that we separate the original thread into specific focus topics. Use this as an opportunity to offer honest and constructive feedback to help make the game you love even better. This thread is for critique on Story.

Thread Rules
1. The =AE= Comprehensive Forum Rules and =AQW= General Discussion Forum Rules apply.
2. Remember this is a critique thread. Any posts which are just suggesting changes without offering any feedback on the game's current status will be deleted and redirected to the AQWorlds Suggestions forum.
3. Constructive criticism is a requirement, not an option. Any trolling, flaming or rude posts will not be tolerated and consequences will happen, accordingly.

quote:

Constructive Criticism

  • What is it?
Constructive criticism is being able to process and offer your own thoughts and opinions in order to give courteous and friendly feedback. This is done by explaining what you like and dislike, while at the same time providing feedback that is useful. This is what separates constructive feedback from ranting/complaining and flaming.

  • Does it help? How?
Yes! Constructive criticism helps because not only are you giving feedback about what you don't like about a quest/event, but you're also giving feedback about what you DID like in the quest. Feedback could include on such topics as statistics, more dialogue, more explanatory cutscenes, more fights - everything that quests or events would normally include. This gives the game staff a better idea on future improvements.

  • Example of Constructive Criticism:
"I didn't partularly like this war because it felt too empty. To have made it better, I think the staff could have had a 50% cutscene to unlock rather than just a shop to progress the storyline. As it was, I personally was a little dissapointed that this war felt more rushed than previous wars, however I do understand that the staff had a lot on their plate when making this release.
That said, I greatly enjoyed the boss fight, the animations and art fit perfectly with the song that was playing in the background. So while not one of the best wars AQW have done, I still enjoyed it. Thank you, AQW staff!"

  • Example of Unconstructive Criticism:
"I didn't like this war at all. What were the staff thinking? The items in the shop were ugly, overpriced and were bugged!! No cutscene? That was never done before and it is not how it should be done ever. Seriously, doesn't the staff ever listen to us?! The boss fight was too hard and took forever to beat :( And there was no sound. I don't think the staff even care anymore. Best war ever /sarcasm I hate this game D:<!"

Thanks to Ikaros for the original thread idea and Christophisis for the divided threads idea.

PS: This post is kinda disturbing so ignore it if you want to.

"It seems like the game lacks the character development, which turns our hero into Gary/Mary Stu."
I guess I could make this statement from reading too much novels. I guess the problem for story development is the consideration of age, especially in puberty.
I know our hero has many ups and downs in life but it feels like our hero is just too monotonous.
If we take deeply into consideration, our hero is a "war hero" in a fantasy setting. We waged war against the 13 Lords of Chaos, made a temporary alliance between two opposing factions, and started a war with QoM, for the sake of peace.

If we describe what a typical fantasy war hero is, it's like this:
    spoiler:

An in-born monster in the flesh of human, a mass murderer in the field of war, and an idealist for the sake of selfish reasons because he/she has the power to do so.

If we could just drop a bomb on our hero like:
    spoiler:

A simple scene of our hero saving the people from a dragon and in the end, the hero got treated as a monster for slaying the dragon.

I know it's idiotic but that's the truth of life. It's harsh and full of misunderstandings.

I don't have anything to say for the story, it very good, character progression is just kinda bad for some reasons such as age factor.

I guess I have immersed myself too much into books... Curse my literature subject and myself for being too immersed into books and stories.

Going to repost my first quote about the story from the original thread here for reference/convenience. I will probably do the same with my other quotes, but I don't want to spam the thread with one super long post, so I'll post the other ones later.

    quote:

As a player who tends to join games because of the story, that's exactly what my main focus in AQW is: Storyline. And I used to be so enthralled with the storylines of AQW, the humor, the wit, the parodies, the fourth wall breaking, I loved every second of it. I especially enjoyed the Doomwood sagas, the AQW Zombies saga, the Xan storyline and the earlier Chaos Lord storylines, although the later ones weren't too bad either, except for the last one, in my opinion. It seemed very shoehorned and rushed, and full of inconsistencies and plot holes, and we already know that the AQW staff had to rewrite the Queen of Monsters storyline, and after around a year, they've decided to rewrite it yet again. The point is, the AQW team are very creative and have a lot of good ideas, they really do, but they aren't very flexible when it comes to the story. They can never seem to make up their mind about certain things, such as the aforementioned Queen of Monsters storyline and how it should go. Also, I'm relatively surprised us being the
    spoiler:

Eternal Dragon of Time/Champion of Balance hasn't had more of an impact on the story, either. Or when we did a bunch of crazy stuff as the 13th Lord of Chaos and don't even seem to be that remorseful about it.

Of course, I don't think that the story shouldn't be nothing but laughs and giggles (it'd probably be out of place, actually), although I do wish more of the "old" humor from the past sagas came back in a side storyline or a couple of cutscenes or something. I know that I, and lot of players, really loved AQW and their games for their humor, and that the story was more consistent and the writers were a bit more cautious with plot holes or at least tried to address them more often, and there were more realistic character reactions, such as
    spoiler:

feeling remorse and guilt for our actions as the 13th Lord of Chaos and perhaps even have other characters reacting to us negatively due to our past actions as such and the whole Eternal Dragon of Time/Champion of Balance thing being more of a plot point.

Also, I think it'd be pretty neat if alignment had a bit more impact on the storyline, although I am not entirely sure if that's possible, but it'd give more meaning to joining an alignment instead of doing it just for something like the alignment exclusive items. And the Book of Lore's appearance in the Doomwood saga was absolutely golden. I wish we had seen the book show up again after that. The book probably could be used as a good plot point and seemed to have a lot of interesting features, to say the least.

I have more, but that's all I'll say for now. I did not mean any offense in my post, I just wanted to offer my thoughts on what I feel AQW is not doing so well at the moment.

So about the story. The story was fine, nice and funny without any glaring plot holes.

As I remember seen Northpointe was supposedly the new hub to replace Battleon....where will a coliseum be located to transfer all the releases? The trainers that arrived from Battleon to rebuild up the adventurer force...of who didn't decide to follow a faction and prefer plain weaponry over all the fancy stuff from the factions. Also who'll juggling the creation of barracks by the factions and army training?

While for the comedy...who's going to transfer that SPAM parody quest chain from DF's last valentines day event into AQW style of a different chain of quests to create the comedy, to finally mess that comes with those annoying piling up SPAM that cant be stopped and cremation can't keep up,while recycling centers can't keep up such as storage of those spam letters, placing them into the ground by digging takes a while.

Will Cysero pops up to turn all of that spam letters into stuff usable for us.....while reminding us did the Queen of Monsters decided to go classic to drown us in spam letters or evenly the Queen of Monster still also get spam letters for some reason. In that case, Queen of Monsters just told her followers to dump out her gotten spam letters and all of them gets spread by her castle's wind turbulence to getting jammed up by wealthy nobles' yards everyday in the morning. Nobles gets angry that there's too much spam and decided to put down a bounty.

We find out who's creating this area's spam letters....question or beat them up and destroy their operation center printing spam letters by a boom, sending them to community service afterwards. The next day more spam letters appears with evenly after original was forced into community service afterwards. Questioned them again and they told us, don't evenly know who's creating those annoying spam advertisement after them.

Since AQW does not have a linear storyline, which actually makes things quite interesting, I find that it's important to inform players if any events that we've previously played through are no longer canonical. This has been the case with a few events, mainly the first Chaos Realm event and how Dragonia was not completely destroyed when The Queen of Monsters was freed from the Chaos Portal.

The stories in AQW are fine. However, the long pauses in them due to things like Holidays, special event releases, and probably other things that I can't think of now do hurt them quite a bit. Let's say in week 1, we start a new storyline. Unfortunately, there's a holiday release the following week and some other event unrelated to the story the next. And maybe something else comes up before the continuation is seen. If there is a huge gap between releases pertaining to the actual main story, the interest we have in it could diminish at a very rapid rate. I see no reason why story releases can't mix with holiday ones. Perhaps not fully, but in some aspects. I think there is an attempt at this, but can't be too sure. The Queen of Monsters story is what we're coming back to after quite a long time and I'm curious to see where it goes.

AQW stories are either really good or really bad. But as individual players, it's up to us to determine which side of the spectrum a story falls. The chaos story started off really well, but after a while, I thought it got completely boring. The whole go to new area, do quests, find out about baddie, beat their pet and then fight them to get a glowing rune to show up on a giant gate was pretty lame. There was a lack of diversity. But there were attempts at making some things interesting. Certain chaos bosses had special effects which made them unique. And when they were first released, most of those fights were a challenge. Even now, Wofwing can be tough to beat and he's one of the earlier Chaos Lords.

What I'd like to see as a future saga is the past of AQW and the events which lead to the slaying of the time dragon. Shouldn't we know what things were like before? Perhaps AQW can make it so that we can play as someone else because prior to the time dragon being slain, we didn't have a role in AQW, and now that I think about it, AQW didn't even exist. Maybe such a saga can be some sort of crossover release. I'd be very interested in something like that.

I don't expect a story to be perfect. Most aren't. But I would like to see stories that are enjoyable, engaging, and interesting enough to want to continue playing their sequential releases.

The storyline that many liked was the recent Throne of Darkness. Admittedly, it came out of nowhere, but in the end it was great. Every release had something for all players. Sure, a couple had things that were exclusive to members, but there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone got to play the main releases in each part of the saga. There was a good mix of seriousness and humor that I'd love to see more of in future stories. The characters in it were all unique in their own right. I suppose the same can be said about the Chaos saga, but I guess there was a bit too much purple for my liking.

    Straight to the point:
    1. Lack of plot twist. Maybe adding more twist to the story (like Drakath backstab Sepulchure in DF, that was rock!!) but don't add too much twist that make the story lame (sorry to say, like Throne of Darkness, where the Mysterious Stranger was the Hero at all). Try twist story where an evil villain betray other villain, or heroes who turned around into chaos.
    2. Stop adding too much jokes and pun into the story (seriously, please for God sake). An epic conversation in battle can be destroyed by a single pun, or jokes (like how Artix afraid of pink, or Cysero addicted to sock, or Beleen with her thing (?)). Please no please. Many players find it not funny at all.
    3. Many players think most of story are predictable, because it is too childish and make it cringe. Sorry to say, this is truth.

Sorry if my words are too strong, but those are some cause that make people quit playing AQW (10k more I think).
Actually many things make them quit (one of them is item remake (Star Sword, Naval Commander)) but we are discussing about story right?

So most of the problems with the story that I have in mind are already mentioned by other members so for now I can only add one problem to the list.
    1. Stop adding more stuff in the story (only for the convenience) and never use it again. For example ChaosWeavers - we made an alliance with them to help us fight Drakath and QoM forces, but we never saw them again, they were never shown again in any battle, we didn't see them in the final chaos war, weren't even mentioned in the attack of northpointe (/join grimattack)which needed help for defending the city, they aren't something you can just wright off, they have reasons and a strong army, they could REALLY help.
Goregrim was added out of the convenience, because at the time QoM forces needed a general to lead the attack on Northpointe, but after the attack we didn't see him again, even tho he said he will come back.
I won't say any more examples cause it is too soon to judge if other characters wont appear in the future but here's a list of currently unused good characters (Chabat, Gravefang, Xan,(I know these 3 were shown/mentioned, but it sort of seems they are a bit forgotten atm), Vaxen, army of drakel led by Twilly, Firestorm Onslaught led by Kyron, Dreadwatch led by Madra)

As @Hellsaiyan and other forumers have mentioned before, the AQW writers need to stop putting storylines on a bus. The Ravenloss storyline ended with the Chaosweavers agreeing to help us, and swearing vegenance against Drakath, if I remember correctly. But they never showed up, and we never heard from them again. Is the event even canon, did the writers forget that it even happened, what's going on here? There needs to be more consistency with the story if people are going to take it seriously.
Also, another thing that needs to be addressed is the whole
    spoiler:

becoming Death thing. Yeah, we sacrificed our powers in the Chaos Portal, but since Death is now dead, and we're not doing it, who is? Wouldn't there be problems with the dead escaping and such without anyone to manage the situation? This could be a good plot point, and really should be one, actually.

And I feel like alignment should have more impact on the story. Maybe alternate endings or something rather than the occasional different flavor text, or NPC's reacting to you differently. I do realize this might be hard to do, though it would give more meaning to choosing who you ally with and might make a few people think twice if the
    spoiler:

Drakath/Chaos and Queen of Monsters factions are released.

Speaking of alignment, another thing I always wanted to see was a neutral faction, maybe after the Chaos storyline to make things easier. It does make sense considering that we're the
    spoiler:

Champion of Balance, and that our hero probably will be rethinking their alignment after the whole chaos thing, especially if they're on the side of Good.

Anyway, that's what I've got for now. I intended to post more, but I got lazy, so that'll be for another day. Overall, I do want the AE Team to know that they do have a great fantasy world to immerse yourself in, and the storyline can be really good, but that as it is right now, it could use some work.

I also feel that there are many things left unexplained in the storyline of AQW.

    spoiler:

I felt like Scarletta's part of the Throne of Darkness Arc had some things left unexplained. There was this big reveal that her tower was in the MIRROR REALM! And then it never came up again. If Scarletta's Tower of Mirrors was in the mirror realm, what happened to the mirror realm version of Scarletta? Shouldn't her tower/underground cavern/whatever the opposite of a giant tower is be in our world?

Our hero is the Eternal Dragon of time. Why don't they use their time pausing powers to pause time more? I don't think it was ever explained why they don't use it more. Maybe it could be mentioned in one release or another that they can't use their powers too much or they'll overload themselves or the fabric of reality will break or something.

There are also many releases that can only be accessed by checking the wiki for past releases or going through the giant archive of design notes. There is the "Quests" tab in the Book of Lore, but there's so many of them it's hard to navigate, and some of them are rare and uncompletable, too. I think that the "Quests" tab should be changed so that instead of a list, it can have a series of small icons representing each adventure, and when an icon is clicked, it turns to a new page in the Book of Lore where it says more about the adventure.

While the last war wasn't as bad a decision as the turkey war, if there's going to be a two-sided war with one outcome, the least that can be done is making it convincing.
Defeat most of Kezeroth's minions, Karok wins, he binds Kezeroth. This was the intended outcome. However, there needs to be better plans for what if Kezeroth won:
Defeat most of Karok's minions, Kezeroth wins, but Karok still binds Kezeroth.
There should be a "why" and a "how" here.

Oh hey, what if Karok's minions were actually carrying the frost like a virus, and killing all of them just made it spread faster and make it possible to weaken Kezeroth?

What happened yesterday and today was fairly dissatisfying, someone in the release thread discusses how there's not really a payoff, etc.

Blah blah blah, axe to grind about how offering players the option to join the Queen's faction is moronic and even if evil is just good but red, being edgy should have stopped at the option to join Drakath, pretty sure neither Lovecraft, Giger nor Martin advocated for joining the eldritch evil for anything.

Maybe sometimes the hero has to ally with a bad guy, but joining with the big bad guy? That makes no sense, is a doubling of effort for the writers on what's already a storyline on very thin ice, especially when the idea of betraying the QoM wouldn't work given how Karok straight up said how he tried that exact thing and that worked out great for him. Also, the QoM is supposed to be omnipotent or something. How can the hero scheme against someone who can tap into your head?

About the result of the last war, all we can do is speculate as to why things happened as they did. I'll stick to my theory of Karok needing time to prepare his power and he needed to distract Kezeroth long enough for that. And that Karok also required sacrifices which the war provided. But this is just a guess. Because of the ending, I still feel the war was not needed and was just wasting time in an attempt to actually give more time for a continuation to happen. So, it was a waste of time which bought time? Sure, I'll go with that. Not the worst thing to happen in terms of story, but still disappointing. The ending would have been okay if there was a plausible reason behind it. There was lack of that which I found almost insulting. I've asked this before, but why taunt us with the illusion that our choice matters?

    quote:

Pretty much what I think. The thing I'm getting at is that this war did not have to happen. At most, it deserved one cutscene and maybe a quest or two. It could have been a 1 v 1 battle between Karok and Kezeroth shown in a cutscene, followed by some random quests we do and then in the end we could get another cutscene that was the one shown at the end of the war. I don't see anything wrong with having that. The war didn't do anything to help progress the story. Regardless of who won or lost, the result would have been the same.

If there's a future scenario like this, I hope things turn out better. Now, I have to consider the positives of what happened. This allows for a good transition back into the Queen of Monsters storyline, and after ignoring it for some time, it's nice to get back to that. I'm both curious and excited to see where things go from here.

Well, i was disappointed with this war the outcome, not only it makes no difference wich side you choose but also we spare Karok and Kezeroth? The 2 who killed who knows how many people in their invasions, hope atleast that the story gets darker(which I don't think will happen) and Drakath-senpai gets back with his chaotic army as seen last frostval, unite with my waifu Gravelyn with her undead army and together we stomp the Queen's anal cavity(if you know what I mean)

Also I'd like for AE to focus on Qom's story without unnecessary holidays(having them in real life is enough already) and when the story is finished it could be the endgame for me, i'd be satisfied

As for the outcome of this war...so any history tidbits of the two death knight contingents from Syrrus ever going appear? Since most likely our tidbits besides from the reputation shops...would question how did Syrrus get these items in the first place. Found them in a opened cache or straight from the astromancer's head's treasury that got books of the contingent? Also who'll probably get known as blacksmiths of these death knight contingent...who happens to observed our wares from Glacial, and Frozentower. Do they evenly talk or just high praised their wares compared to ours?

Why so many dislike AE jokes/puns ? This is pretty much a trademark for them.
You start by falling off the edge of a cliff. You relive this multiple times in the story, something i find hilarious actually. (or was it just once?)
In AQ3D tutorial, Zorbak and Grandpa's conversation is probably the best part.
I played Leeroy Jenkins AQ interpretation like 6 years ago and i still remember it ...
Maybe my humor is just this bad but they actually make me smile. I'd never like that changing.
If i want a hardcore/badass character i'd probably look everywhere else but here because it's exactly what 90% of mmo industry does.

What i don't like and probably what makes the game a total mess. AQw is 8 years old, its huge! Sadly, we have no way in keeping track of what we did, what we need to do and where i'm going. How am I supposed to get 100% completion?

Take this for example, when i've returned in the game i did Xan return but i don't even know what happen with him in the first place...ruined the whole story for me.
I made some quest lines for npcs i've never met before but my character pretty much knew everything about them.
Linear progression is actually better than this mess.

Story is not even half the problem why i can't enjoy it. Its how i've got there and how i'm spending more time on the wiki understanding how i'm going to get there and do that.

I'm at the point of begging for book of lore / map redesign.
Maybe a snake like map starting from tutorial up until today event (including every side story/quest) .

I'd wait another year after the server rewrite just for this !

    Please?

I've re-did this post around 10 times already and handling this at 5 in the morning is exhausting. I apologize about all my non-english speaker grammar errors. Battle off! I guess

I like this idea very much! And I agree that, for new players or players that don't play regularly, a massive pile of releases can confuse them. AQW is in a desperate need for an update to Quest/Story tracking. With a snake like map, it will be much easier for players to see where to start and where to head to next.

Changing the topic, this Glaceran war is my most disappointed war/release ever because the war has no significance at all. Kezeroth won but as the story demanded, he lost. This makes me feel like wars in AQW are becoming more like just another random stuff to do, not a serious, huge scale battle as they were meant to be (With this description we have to exclude joke wars like Chickencows and Turkeys, of course.) I personally believe wars shouldn't be treated as just a way to end a chain of releases, but rather an enormous and decisive climax with considerable consequences.

I wonder if it would be possible for the staff team to go back to older story-lines (specifically the main saga) and redo them with newer, modern features to make them interesting for new players that are just beginning the main story-line?

I.E, upgrading old artwork, adding rewrite special features to old bosses, implementing more connections to make the story-line more linear. I'm mostly writing about the Lords of Chaos saga, which got better as it progressed but our Hero had no direction or initiative to go from one Chaos Lord to the other. (Also it's possible to just skip the first half of the story-line, please try to do something to prevent players skipping it).

As the above users stated, I would love if the staff team decided to implement an easy way to navigate through all the releases and separate filler, event, holiday and main releases from each-other.

I have one small suggestion myself, slightly related to this, that I hope is possible. The ability to set your spawn location, similar to DragonFable, where the next time you log in to the game your character spawns in the last set home, the difference would be you can only set your spawn location in certain town/cities which are relevant to the storyline, i.e Northpointe, Dreadlock Citadel or SkyTower Aegis.

Finally, I disliked how a lot of the storyline is still focused within Dragonia, can we see more expansion in the Drakonus continent, I feel like you guys gave up on it, it had so much potential, exploring a new world and having new Good/Evil bases to set up in.

Few other players I've communicate with them about this recent war, they were happy about it and felt exactly the same feel but well, i do understand this is your "opinion" honestly, your the first player to see you being disappointed about the Kezeroth vrs Karok.. what were you expecting, if you don't mind asking.

I was expecting the outcome of the war to be as the war progressed. Kezeroth's side won, but the story made him lost, which defeated the point of having a war to decide which side is to win in the first place.

I don't understand the point of even having a war if the result was/is predetermined? The Kezeroth vs Karok war was just like the Dage vs Nulgath one in which Nulgath won, but was banished to a new dimension anyway. Why even have a war if the result doesn't even reflect what happens in its ending cutscenes? There should have been a better job explaining the need for the war even happening. It did next to nothing to progress the story and was probably a waste of a release.

In the end, I suppose things turned out best, but I can't help but feel disappointed in the actual war. There were many flaws with it and I hope other wars are improved. What should have been a useful tool in progressing the story became nothing more than a week wasted just for a cutscene which ignored the actual result of the fighting. It ruined two of the better villains in game.

That said, it does give us an opportunity to get back to the Queen of Monsters, and maybe we will begin finding allies in unlikely persons. The concept of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" isn't anything new and if the villains are actually willing to work with us to beat the Queen, then perhaps the story will get more interesting as it goes on. Still, this doesn't excuse how pointless that war was.
