Archmage-related quest with a teaser armor reward to boot, WooHoo! Hope that face/hat is removable with use of custom faces while we await the long-anticipated Class release down-the-road.

If there is a ztoken bonus through April 5th, I sure hope they release new doomlights before that expires! That's a Tuesday, so Hopefully they do release new ones and on 3/31. We'll see.

Would it be possible to release the missing elements "Water/Wind" of the Booster Pets/Guests and
"Wind/Darkness" Bloodblade, so in this case we can get some Benefits of the Spring Z-Token Bonus?

I almost forgot, but after re-reading the newsletter again I realized this quest already exists and that this is an update release rather than a new quest.

But I hope maybe down the line the Aelthai questlines can get updated as well. There's a lot of nice equipment that is contained in her questlines and the game desperately needs niches to be filled on a permanent basis. Aelthai quest updates of course like this one can substantially help towards that goal. A few items I think people would appreciate specifically from her questline being: Boreal Bolt (What's with the weather?), Winged Lightning Staff (Nice Staff!) and Creptus (Quest for the Creptus). There are others but those are what's immediately on my mind. I didn't realize anyways that it's been THAT long since the first major phase (2009-2011) of the sweep was implemented and Aelthai's time was back then. Time sure does fly.

Also since this quest is nearly a decade old, I wonder if it's going to incorporate any Lore facts/developments that have happened since 2012-2013. The KoO in particular haven't really been a cohesive thing since the mid 2010's to be sure. Yes I know IMR and Kamui are still in the group but the process of "game balance" is more collaborative than ever now and the hand to balance and change things has been much more democratic in recent years as the community has matured and gotten better at understanding AQ's balance system. In-game this fact probably doesn't matter but the KoO as an in-game concept has really been an enigma or just hasn't been relevant to the in-game Lore in years, a decade nearly.

I do wonder what elements the Archmage armor will cover. It seems likely to me that it'll be a neutral-element armor, which is rather rare for AQ these days.

This is kind of besides the point, but when I went to the design notes about the class news on my phone, the forums were filled with ads. Some, I believe, inappropriate. Was this just me, some kind of minor malware on my phone?

@above: It's an ad network that creates popups in a way that blends into itself the normal browser experience by popping up when you navigate links and embeds itself into the page so as to trick you into thinking it's part of the normal browsing experience (it's not, and do NOT click it). I've actually noted this awhile back and it got very little attention. Unfortunately AE hasn't filtered the ad network they use to host the forums in years and a lot of malicious/spammy networks have been added to the network. The best thing you can do is get a browser on mobile that had an adblocker (or another wide-spectrum blocker) built into it like Brave Browser, DuckDuckGo Browser or if you're using Android, Soren Stoutner's privacy browser. I almost never go anywhere on the internet anymore without a browser that implements a wide-spectrum blocker as a default experience. It is kind of sad that the forums hasn't been maintained to the point where it can now serve as an entrypoint for malicious actors via ad networks because that automatically updates compared to the filter list which needs to be manually updated.

Anyways, the continuity for this quest is confusing to say the least (and Cray ought to pitch in to rectify this). This quest was made around 10 years ago, and there's been a lot of stuff that has happened in lore. This is supposed to at it appears be a bridge to the eventual Archmage class. But the actual quest itself in its current iteration doesn't really mention archmage besides it being Kalaynr's class, with a reference to Zephyros. I assume when Archmage proper is released that it'll incorporate all the developments and facts in lore that have happened up to that point. But unless some dialogue is going to chance I don't actually understand why the Archmage equipment is going to get teased to us when the quest itself only references Archmage because Kal has to reluctantly watch over some kids and they become the "Archmage Jr's" only in respect that Kal gives them a little knowledge; ie, trained BY an archmage, but not actually training to BE an archmage.

Reading the quest now it feels like it's more about the KoO (which I noted hasn't been lore-relevant in forever) and Kal being uncomfortable around kids than it is about archmages.

There are a lot of older items that are lower level before max level caps were raised with outdated and bad effects, and revamping them with quest revamps would be very cool. Also, there are old items with good effects that if brought up to date level-wise, might be changed to be not as effective , kind of negating the hope for a level increase. However, either way I would consider revamping old quests and bringing cool items up to current levels and standards a very cool weekly update, and welcome this. Weekly updates dont always have to be brand new stuff, and thats what we have seen a little bit of thus far this year, and hopefully continue to see that throughout 2022.

Just some ideas for new Shields as Z-Token Packages or Rare/UltraRare GGBs:

As examples

A separate new Shield with +105 Initiative Bonus and a stat Drive would be great.

MC and give up resistance or MRM defences for +105 Initiative Bonus and INT Drive or CHA/LUK/DEX/STR Drive?

Or, just with +105 Initiative Bonus, it would be fine.

Troposhield took CiT's place

At least for Earth/Energy/Fire

CiT today wouldnt be an issue, since it seems as though its just about making sure boss fights are challenging. And damage caps, not to mention damage back to you, would make it undesirable in that situation

Not justifying Bu kek's suggestion, just saying.

And Pun-isher

I'm afraid that nothing about the original Chieftain's Ironthorn effect would be fine today. It provided a constant x1.5 damage bonus, which was excessive for such an effect and does not belong on a shield by modern standards. Its was also only paying for a fraction of its effect's worth.

In comparison, Troposhield effectively compresses a skill. This is a single-turn effect that can be resisted and properly pays for its effect via SP cost and a MRM drop. It's far from the destructive effect that CIT had on balance and design space.

I agree with most of that.

Its not the same, and CiT certainly didn't have the downsides to balance the upside.

Yes, Troposhield does have an SP cost. Yes, it can be resisted. But in terms of a shield slot boosting damage, Troposhield took the place of CiT, for 3 elements...for all intents and purposes, despite some better balancing.

CiT did make the game more boring. Just equip and click. Other things have taken the "equip and click" crown though. But modern boss design mechanics would effectively negate even the absurdity that CiT was, making it, I feel, a bit less absurd in this single scenario.

So I am revising the statement to say it wouldnt be an issue vs bosses if it were to still be the same as back then. And negating the challenge in challenge fights seems to be a larger focus on balance more so than regular gameplay, which is understandable.

As for the quest and potential for updating old items, the verbiage in the news letter suggests as much, and if so, IDK why, but looking forward to old updates more so than brand new stuff. IDK why. Maybe it's just nostalgia setting in.

Apprentice Archmage armor has no description.
    spoiler:

Spellcaster lean. 2 skills, 1 pays SP to reduce MP costs of water spells. Second skill casts a mana shield. Not quick cast, can stack with other man shields like the shield and with itself.

    spoiler:

The water witch was a reference to that old horror movie that scary movie did a parody of, made me laugh.

The rewards are plenty. Some old I guess revamped ones, with odd levels like the old days. News ones are..

Archmage Apprentice armor- Water spellcaster lean armor. 2 skills. a 97 MP gandolphin like clone, but also adds +12 blocking for 3 rounds and +10 status resistance. The status resistance I think is permanent. This costs a turn, though. So idk seems not worth it. <--Edit- NM, the usefulness of this seems it stacks with itself, so you can cast it every turn and the blocking and barrier build higher and higher for just 97 MP. The barrier *is* hitting your MP more via monster attacks, but this is acting like a perpetual defense builder, until you dont have Mana. This could be good use for beastmages trying to tank. The 2nd is a 345 Sp quick cast to make your next water spells cost less mana. I tested, and this doesnt work. Cant report by how much.

Light shield that takes 114 MP per turn @ L150 to do the Necromancer anima post-spell barrier. Two casts thus far has resulted in 84, and 89. It lucky strikes, and with frostval crown did 178. Im sure this will be called a bug and luck will be made less useful otra vez. It stacks with necromancer's for a larger amount.

Summon/Call iron golem- Earth guest (there's also a pet version, both are ztokens) that the description says one mode does greater damage versus I'm guessing monsters with INT, or those that spellcast. The other mode tries to hit the monster MP, reduce it to 0 similar to warlics oblivion sphere, or some such attribute. Not going to spend the tokens to find out. Hopefully an info subs will be there soon.

Abominable assault G (l149 ice spell) is there. I cannot remember what else but I think some lower level light spells. Blah forget the rest, not in the shop anymore

Had a chance to play the release:

    spoiler:

The bosses were really tanky (Abominal Snowman and Iron Golem). Not only the universally low resists (50% at highest with fire) but also the even lower than usual damage cap. Usually damage caps are around 300-400, but these were very low.

Reading and comparing the old dialogue, there doesn't seem to be any changes to that.

A little tip for the Iron Golem Boss: Remember his MP attack is energy, and his normal attacks are earth. So keep that in mind. Otherwise it'll be a slogfest.

As for the items, it doesn't look like they updated the tiers for Jr. Archmage and Abominal Assault, although I would have hope they'd do that. Not the worst thing since they still go up to 149, but that extra up to 150 would have been nice.

    spoiler:

Updates to the Archmage Apprentice Armor from my last post. 1. The +10 status resistance now has added turns, where before it seemed permanent. But I have gotten it to list twice. Still bugged. The spell cost reduction is in MP only. SP cost spells do not get reduced. Also, the "spell reduction cost" seems to be the entire 653, but unsure if overcharged would wholly be reduced.

The armor is interesting. It's essentially converting your 653 spell cost to 392 SP, and instead is using your MP bar as a HP barrier. So this is indirectly very defensive, and stacking effects with geocastellum makes for some powerful results, especially the interactions between MP barrier stacking with HP barriers, like from dragonlord shields.
