For those of us watching on discord, nobody saw coming what ended up transpiring. A lot of people came out of the woodworks when they previously had not and even more decided that this year was the one to make a statement. Needless to say it went above and beyond everyones' expectations of what would happen.

That said, there was quite a lot of frustration around the contest, particularly around the donating experience, and the fact that the top cut for this year being extremely high, enough to lock out people who had previously played moderate amounts out of the running. On several issues, some frustrations were especially known:

Donating Gold: This is by far the most raised issue. As I've stated before (and others too), donating gold is extremely tedious and time consuming. Unlike tokens, which has virtually no timeout, gold seems to have especially long delays that don't ever seem consistent to itself. People have raised that it takes extremely long amounts of time to contribute, and thus many people don't even participate at all. This has to be addressed next year. I had raised this earlier, but it seems that it was said that there was no time to address this year. And from what we've heard, unless we're diligent about this next time around, the likelihood for any changes will likely not happen.

I have to be honest to myself, the donation experience has always been poor. And this year has made me seriously re-consider whether I should even participate the next time around in earnest. The experience of offloading gold should be fast, simple and straightforward. Which so far the contest has not seemed to have done much. Yes there were improvements made last year by not forcing you out of the menu, but all the change has done is forced us to wait around while the backend, for whatever reason decides it can only send in a certain number of requests at a time.

Announcing a Stretch Goal in the Middle: This added a lot of stress. A lot of people were already struggling to get by, and announcing the stretch goal gave a mid-contest surge that put a lot of people out of the running. For others, it forced them to put in more time into the game. People don't like when there's sudden changes because it also changes the whole calculus of the event of whether to participate or not, or what to do about the people who had already reached a certain level of activity.

Less Participation Prizes: There's been a lot said about this one about how there were no participation prizes. Yes we had stretch goals, but the lack of participation this time around was noted. This year, we only had faces for participation. The misc was decided to be given to the top 50 only, and there were no fixed-tier prizes unlike previous years. This seemed like a major regression on the part of donation contests.

Requirement of needing multiple characters to gain receipts: It's no secret that this is something a lot of people aren't happy about. Some people gain more than their fair share of receipts, while many don't get a receipt at all. And for how this contest was run, now more than ever if you didn't play at the beginning or the last 3 weeks, you had a drastically lower change of getting a receipt. No less the others whom often use multiple characters to effectively widen their net to gain receipts over others.

Now that those have been highlighted, there's a couple things I and others have thought of that could redress the situation:

A Streamlined Donation Process: This is probably the highest priority on the menu. All things withstanding, a clunky donation system was the single most important factor of how much someone was going to participate. Ideally, moving large amounts of gold should be an quick, automatic and easy thing to do. Not the current system of waiting sometime between 45-60 seconds per transaction. Changing this would make these events much more enjoyable, and drastically increase activity.

Fixed-Tier rewards for all rewards: This wouldn't even have to involve a change to the ranked system. We can still have ranks, but instead of only awarding items to the top X players, all it would require is awarding a prize to anyone who has reached or passed a certain threshold. A lot of people don't participate because they are of the belief they cannot win. There's a lot of potential people who would participate, but end up not due to this. Implementing this kind of change would also encourage participation and expand the pool to those whom never participate or usually don't. This would also redress the lack of participation prizes this time around.

A more equitable donation system: The current system is rife with abuse: If you have multiple characters, you will get more receipts than those who don't. If you play at *certain* times, you will reap an overwhelming benefit. This all means the people who in theory need it the most will never see the prizes, and the people who don't get the overwhelming amount of receipts. Changing this so everyone only gets a receipt at the end, and spreading it evenly across the board would do wonders for increasing equity on this front.

Anyways, these are my thoughts on the contest. I really hope that there will be changes (though honestly, I am pessimistic about this but won't rule out the possibility for). At least staff has noted that they're going to be looking at feedback. I certainly hope so. These things should really be the highlight of the year but for a lot of people it's just stress on top of more stress. To bring it to where it should be, we should really take note and make our feelings known.

A-a-a-rgh.

Got kicked out of top 100 in the last minutes of the contest. Didn't have the tokens to donate on main character, logged in on an alt to move its tokens to shared vault, moved back to donation character to get them from shared vault...

Missed the deadline by literally ten seconds

Sweet relief for the contest being finally over. I have never farmed harder than now and I'm of the belief that nobody will ever break my record. Though I'm always up for surprises.

Congrats to the winners, and what a performance, especially on the last day! It doesn't seem clear when the prizes will be distributed but I'm certainly looking forward to what they'll look like.

An exciting donation event.

But we're in dire need of a drastic rethink of the whole system for various reasons so that the focus is on being a charitable community rather than a hoarding community beholden to the fear of missing out.

Hollow said that the Ballyhoo shops for us to claim the items will come in February 1st, which shouldn't be long now if all goes as planned. It's a similar case with the Paleskull set from the Summer Donation Contests, will be the case for further donation contests too.

I had a good time participating in my first donation contest (token version). It makes me happy to support the staff/game/players and I get to check out some premium content/equipment which is fun. I’ll have to play for 1-2 more years to get top 50 in the gold contest, but it gives a nice incentive for playing longer term.

Amazing seeing these complainers every year, but here we go again. If anyone wants to put in the time/money (financially supporting the game) to have more than 1 Account then they absolutely have the right to participate in donations with 1 character from those different Accounts imo. Especially since transferring between Accounts is not possible as everyone here knows. <Snips un-needed comment.> ~Anim

Biased opinion here as typical. There was a time when it wasn't top 50 but rather top 15 or even 25. The Staff did "rethink" the system by generously making the top lists encompass the top 50 and these same few people still want to complain! We should be thanking the Staff for expanding the participation requirement levels by a lot rather than complaining about it, but then again you can never please the always-whining nerf crowd. BTW, everyone is more than welcome to start a 2nd Account and participate in these drives by donating "charitably" to the community (like I have done and continue to do) with Z-Tokens/gold so they too can have folks from the tavern come here and complain about it. Also, Dreiko, it's not fomo or "scummy", for anyone who wants to put in the time/effort to charitably support the game by having more than 1 Account and generously giving from a representative character on those accounts. Plus the Staff already provides us with a convenient Shop so only 1 character needs to participate from each Account. I'll never understand the whining about receiving big donations from people like myself who have given out literally millions of Z-Tokens in these events.

Firstly congratulations PD was hoping hit half trillion and congrats to everyone who hit top 50 on either contest.
On the issue of limiting how we play and character inventories as William Wallace said FREEDOM.
I as single player hit top 50 last year, I have multiple accounts now but cause of 20 AE bonus which I mainly use for fun running Rares Which I enjoy like megoglin but I also enjoy discovering items in game never knew existed in the game even if rare.
On gold donations sorry all I like as tedious discourages sniping so keep as is

Trying it now, the Shadow Stalker set is certainly interesting. The weapon has a chance to do a Freeze-like effect for Darkness. The Shield defends from attacks from Shifter/Shadow type monsters the way that Holy Communicant and Paladin do for Undead. The Misc is the key piece that allows for added Freeze potency alongside enhanced defenses from Shadow/Shifter attacks. I'm wondering if this means we're going to fight more Shadow/Shifter monsters in the future. When combined with pieces like Spotter Drake, these items have a very strong potential. I don't have the immediate list of all shifter/shadow monsters, but I can only assume that if I went back to the Ultimon/Bizzare Flecks/War Between Shadows questlines these monsters which were previously very difficult would be much easier to face. Which is nice because I often go back to quest for items in these areas.

Looking forward to the Devourered Earth items, which I hope are coming soon! In the meantime, it seems that there are some hints about what the yet-to-be-released items do. It seems like the misc will help increase the power of your earth-element attacks, the shield adds extra effects on your attacks, the weapon having increased power when the enemy is suffering a damaging status like Bleed, Burn, Poison and the like.

Finally had a chance to try out the Devoured Earth, and I really like the items! The weapon itself has a lot of healing potential. When combined with the shield, you can heal almost 300HP / turn, which is a pretty big amount. The Shield skill cost is quite expensive but if you use an SP regeneration item it'll refill itself back up quite quickly. Plus Damage and potency items are always welcome, so misc is nice too. Wind monsters are quite common so this is a nice welcome, and there's no shortage of items that will make use of the set's status potency.

Overall I was left satisfied with the design of the items. I think there's big potential in both sets that might come to be useful at a later time.

100% agree with this statement. They are literally giving away tons of extra gold and tokens to everyone as well as giving more sales to the game for that additional spot. It's wild to me how some people can call this selfish.

Agree with this as well. It sounds like sour grapes from people who wants the rewards without working hard or spending money. You expect people who work hard all year round and/or spend a ton of money to get the exact same items as someone who comes in last minute without spending a dime? That is ridiculous on so many levels. Such a suggestion not only makes it unfair for those who are willing to put in the time, effort and money, but you're literally suggesting to KILL the game. Reducing time played and reducing amount people spend. What exactly can the game survive on then?

So many people have benefitted from the extra tokens and gold given away from his alt character and you're complaining because 1 guy lost his spot? Sacrificing a forest over 1 tree isn't a smart idea. As with any choice made, there is a cost and that cost is 1 person losing the spot. The community benefits more overall from his generosity.

The whole event has always traditionally been a contest format. It's literally in the name. It's also no secret that this is what makes them the most money. AQ isn't as big as AQW. Taking away the competitive aspect would undoubtedly have a big hit on sales. If you don't have the means to take part you absolutely don't have to.

The whole "spirit of donating/giving" thing doesn't speak to me. A better way to term these events would be a charity auction. The items are being offered to the highest bidders while the proceeds goes to "charity" i.e the rest of the playerbase. You call them selfish because those who want it more prove themselves through donating more gold or tokens and that's why they are deserving of it. This doesn't take away the fact that whatever they give goes back to the playerbase and doesn't diminish the "charity" aspect of it

Now for my review on the items. Oh boy where do I start.

Token Misc: Bland and only good because of the 20 universal status potency with the FSB. Apart from that I'd rather run Optico if not using the full set. 6.5/10
Suggestion: Bump the universal status potency without the FSB to be a bit better, 12 or 15 would be nice

Token Shield: Horrible. The cost is super high and the Poison and Burn is so weak. Absolutely not worth using in it's current state. 0/10
Suggestion: Cost either needs to be significantly reduced or the Poison and Burn power needs to be significantly increased

Token Weapon: Wasn't a big fan of it originally but it grew on me. Autohit + Heal is decent when combined together. 7/10
Suggestion: The buff to the heal with statuses can be increased. Currently it's insignificant and not worth going out of your way to inflict statuses before healing. I'm healing about the same amount with or without statuses

Gold Misc: Not a big fan because Crystal of Restless Shadows exists and is a free item. Using with Ultimon's Armour and the Shield from this set makes it give the exact same resistances as Crystal of Restless Shadows. There is close to 0 additional benefit to carrying this item over Crystal of Restless Shadows when facing a Shadow monster. It's not bad on its own but low rating from me because this is supposedly premium and a free item can do almost the same thing. 3/10
Suggestion: Increase the resistance to x0.4 instead of x0.5. It needs to be better than a free alternative

Gold Shield: Niche but I like it. Finally a better replacement for Exalted Paladin Guard. 7/10

Gold Weapon: Probably the best item out of the 6. I love that we're getting another source of Void damage even if it's niche. 8/10

Overall, alot of the items needs a buff. These are some of the most premium items in the game for crying out loud. It can't be bad or comparable to free items. Do better

  Lorekeeper
And Pun-isher

Items can be tweaked if they have issues, but as has been explained in a thread I've linked once or twice, power is not arbitrary. To increase the power of one aspect of the item would require shifting its power budget away from another, and we can't arbitrarily reduce costs without decreasing power nor increase power without an adequate cost. Something can be made efficient or overcharged, for instance, but not pay an efficient cost for an overcharged spell. It would be as destructive as, say, making quick-cast spells have the same power as regular spells.

As it has also been explained to a point that there's no room for doubt that it has been read: The official (Not a Lorekeeper opinion but an AQ team standard) rule is that premium items and standard items follow the same balance rules. If donation rewards need a buff or are in any way outcompeted in their own niche by other items (Feasible for Devoured Earth, dubious but with room for discussion for Shadowstalker given the Eclipsed functionality is the first implementation of the effects), we're certainly receptive to feedback. But one last time: Please stop requesting that said buffs go Pay To Win and not follow the rules.

So, since the previous player post was a profoundly negative review, I'll balance things out with a positive review because I really like these items.

Shadowstalker Guard: -26 to Shadows/Shifters is definitely a niche effect. However, it's quite the different story when one considers the options available for Darkness. I'll use the AQ Wiki as a reference.
Eclipsed Dragonlord's Will? I can't exactly use that unless I invest in Str, or the SP -> Barrier HP conversion will be a net loss.
Lunar Eclipse Shield? That's only if I play dodge and have no other shield I want to use, which I most certainly do. *cough*Titan's Fall*cough*
Terror Totem? That costs Z-Tokens and eats Fear, which makes it only usable against bosses without Freedom/stun immunity altogether or remove it at some point. The latter kind of boss usually has a mechanic where I really want to stun the boss during that window when the boss loses Freedom, so eating Fear isn't exactly the best idea. Also, I just don't have sources of Fear on a lot of my characters.
Eternal Twilight's Regalia? I dislike such randomness on my shields, and it's again a dodge-related effect.
Luna Defender? This is indeed good for 100-proc users, but many of my characters don't use 100-proc weapons, and the damage reduction is relatively minor.
The only shield I have that compete are Chaoswrought Shield, which I only have one copy and is also a Donation Contest rare, and Bone China Bulwark, a perma-rare shield that costs Z-Tokens and will get elemental variants every year. Nothing can truly replace Shadowstalker's niche, and I've gotten into enough Shadow battles to know I can definitely benefit from this niche.
Shadowstalker's Ferocity/Cunning/Wisdom: Darkness Freeze skill! Also, Harm compression against Freedom bosses along with true Void compression with the FSB. This is absurdly strong, completely broken. This is one of the strongest nukes in the game against bosses. I'm actually surprised this was released. I thought the devs had learned from Primal Fear that this kind of effect is ridiculous, but I guess not. In all honesty, I'm not a fan of the FSB. It sets all kinds of precedents that I find really alarming. It's an FSB that doubles the power of an item. It's true Void on a very common trigger. It's a game-warping level of power on something only 50 players can use.
Shadowstalker Charm: x0.5 to Light/Dark that also works on all attacks from Shadows/Shifters and +20 Eclipse Potency. I'm a bit disappointed that we're continuing to get Freeze Potency miscs that only work on a single kind of Freeze instead of all variants, but that's a minor gripe. This is a modern dual-element resist misc that costs a basic amount of SP. This completely stomps Insightful Twilight Mirror. Also, since it's a modern misc, it's better than the old misc Crystal of Restless Shadows at higher resistance %. Since most people don't carry Shadow armors, they usually have at least one resist much higher than the low resists required for old flat subtractive resistance miscs to be superior. This is usually going to be better for resists. This is basically the best option "available." I certainly can't complain about that even though the SP upkeep cost is strangely low. Since it looks like it's only paying for one resist, it seems like it "should" pay around double what it does now unless this is a new standard. I think it'd also be okay to make it just a standard compression misc since the Shadow trigger should already work for almost all monsters one would need both Light and Dark resists at once for.

Devoured Vengeance: This one I won't say much because it's pending some potential changes. I'll just say I love the concept and the save. Earth is quite the stacked element for shields, so I'm not sure how I'll fit it in, but I'll try to make it work.
Devoured Apex/Conquest/Pinnacle: +5% MC and a toggle between a standard mode and an autohit mode that pays 30% damage to heal 12.66% Melee per hit triggered against DoTs to heal 14.66% Melee per hit. This healing has a x0.75 for Magic, scales off Earth resist, and has a hit cap of 4 hits. This is our first item with the post-stat-revamp auto-hit valuation. That's fantastic news and hopefully means we can see other items get fixed as well to use the stronger x0.8 penalty instead of x0.65 penalty. Beyond what this precedence, this is just great in general. Wind monsters are often the dodgiest in the game, so Earth auto-hit's particularly useful. I also really like auto-hit healing guaranteeing that the heal will occur. The heal is decent, but the other thing is how well this works with the shield. Since the shield's statuses rely on hits, auto-hit guarantees the maximum power. Inflicting those status effects then buffs the heal, and the HP healed from both the Siphon and the weapon can then fuel conversion to SP for more inflictions. It's great.
Devoured Stone Memory: x0.5 Earth resist or +20% Earth damage with +10 Generic Status Potency. This is really good. It's the first Generic Status Potency misc we've gotten that has an element, so I don't have to compress misc elements to fit it in, which makes it the best for this purpose. I also just don't like using Optico due to not liking Hypercrit, so I'm really glad to have another option now. The FSB makes this crazy though. +20 Generic Status Potency from the misc, weapon, and shield slots is definitely a first. If one uses Necro with the title, that's 27.5 Generic Status Potency from those 4 slots. That surpasses the 15+10.99 one would have previously gotten from Frostwyrm FSB + Optico, though the +50 Luk from the latter is situationally better. This is also just superb Potency compression. 27.5+1.5 Level+20 Major+2.5 Minor is guaranteed status infliction with a neutral save. Things like Boss Boost and monster stat build variations obviously affect this, but this is still fantastic.

If I can add my two cents, I found the gold set to be absolutely perfect. It's exceptionally useful, but only in its own very narrow niche. It's not a must-have, not blatant power creep (outside the void damage thing), but every once in a while, when the staff release a powerful shadow boss like Rocky, you remember that you have something like this in your inventory and go "holy crap, I'm going to totally own that sucker".

This, I think, is what donation sets should truly be like.

I think it's time we got rid of limitations on donation rewards and instead go with milestone unlocks so everyone can enjoy the gear. Exclusivity from donation rewards hurts the very idea of generosity. Nilak was done perfectly and should be looked to as an example.

Nilak donation revolved gold only (I was in hiatus) ? Personally if the change is implemented, only persons charitable at heart will purchase(donate) Tokens.

I got the gold donation shield, but kind of sad I missed out on token donation shield.

I still feel strongly that exceptions should be made especially for items as premium as these but fine, let's go along with the idea of sacrificing something else in return.

Token Misc: take a bit out of the Earth res, make it x0.6 and/or take a bit out of the damage, maybe 15% instead and channel those into a higher universal status potence. Generally the complains with this aren't huge and I'm not super dissatisfied with this or anything. While certainly quite usable in its current form, we do already have multiple variants of 20% damage boosts and certainly alot of x0.5 resist items so I think I would appreciate a better universal status potency item

Token Shield: reduce the duration to 3, heck maybe even 2 turns. The burn and poison combined is currently barely able to do 100 damage on a foe with 100% resist. That power needs to be at least tripled

Token Weapon: again, not a hugely problematic item. I would be fine if it stayed the same. I just feel that the buff to healing when the mob has a status on it could be very slightly more, the difference currently is almost non existent. Maybe pay like 5% more damage or something? Idk

Gold Misc: increase the SP cost and make it x0.4 to light and dark instead. Regular shadow mobs can typically be nuked so using defensive miscs against them is not something I would even consider to be necessary and regular armors are where the misc would supposedly shine and do better as opposed to crystal of restless shadows. I would only consider bringing specialty shadow equipment vs tough shadow bosses like virophage, rocky and to a smaller extent, ultimon. When using specialty shadow equipment, the misc is on par with crystal of restless shadows. This is what bothers me. In the case whereby I almost certainly need specialty shadow defensive equipment, it's not better than a free alternative

I find this statement quite ridiculous. It's very good yes, but certainly not on a game-breaking level. I find it even more odd that after paying 200b through the nose you actually want to see weaker items instead of better ones

This would be nice. This is a little iffy with the token-system since it's real life currency. Would the top donators be alright with a top X list where the rewards they would get would be color-customized items similar to war rewards for top spots in addition to a milestone-type system?

Sure, and it would be fine for those top ones to get rewards which scale too while the rest have permanent shops with items for individual levels. It works for wars, probably would be fine for donations too. One of the flaws with the limited rewards coming from the donation reward system is there are last minute misses due to people rushing then. It's unfair to the ones not around then who thought they were fine. A system where rewards depend on milestone donation amounts, whether individual or group effort would prevent that.

Sounds like the gold items are not too bad, and shine in the fsb. The shield by itself is something I will literally *never* use. Anything that reduces damage specific to a subset of monsters IMO makes it too situational, and undesirable, but that's just me. It might be ok versus a specific quest/war that carry such monsters, but outside of that It will stay in storage. But using in a Fsb mode seems worthwhile. It feels like you need to run all 3 items or none. Nice to see dark freeze finally, hopefully more to come...and hopefully scaling effects vs light GET LOOKED AT, as I continue to find things that don't work vs freeze like effects.

That's one seemingly available strategy that players can utilize but when items don't work properly with them it diminishes the effect, which already usually isn't great as an everyday carry due to freedom (this stuff has a great idea to change to vs freedom, though)

The Token items are a mixed bag. I personally do not use auto hit, so for those that do it may be good for them. The magic weapon version gave me approx 70 heal in my werepyre test, which isn't enough to use. I like infernal's, and the elder blades poison heals much better.
The shield isn't too shabby, but suffers from spreading the power out too far. Korri suggested bumping the power or lowering the SP, but that's not going to happen. The SPcost-> total melee power of the effects are balanced likely, but it can be tweaked to use less turns which would increase the per turn potency. To me, that's the best play. I'm ok with larger than normal SP/MP costs on things. I think the idea of the shield's effects is fine, not bad in fact, just the 5 turns IMO should be more like 2 or 3.

The token misc is "meh". 20 all status potency is quite good, yes, but I mostly play a BM and using Optico for 10 + pet LS and then going on top with a shield's specific status potency for 20 like choke/panic/blind etc IMO is a better play for *me*. The token misc will definitely be better for non BM"s.

The donation system does have flaws. Yeah things have changed over time. Nothing will ever be perfect. For me, I donated and pushed to 26th, and planned on watching to maybe donate last minute. But I ended up getting stuck putting my 6 month old to bed again (he woke up) and once I was done it was 2 minutes past the deadline. I was like "oh no". But I went to look, at approx 4 minutes past, and I was listed at 48 and gave a sigh of relief, and went to bed pleased. Woke up and was 51st, and was upset I got sniped and although the "refresh" wasn't the cause, and I was stuck IRL and that was why I got sniped, at the end of the day the list should be refreshed at the deadline.... not refreshing at the deadline IMO should be addressed. Had I know I was 48th 2 minutes to go, I would have donated some more and made a push to be under 50th....

But in retrospect, that wasn;'t worth a potency misc I'll never use, so I'm good actually.
