Counter This room seems to be both a storage room and a makeshift mess hall. OK Rack When you enter Magus Hansa's room and approach Magus Hansa: ???: I thought I heard a commotion. <Character:> Magus Hansa, I presume? Magus Hansa: You are correct. Magus Hansa: And you are...? Magus Hansa: Wait. Let me guess. Magus Hansa: Even with the loss of the gift of sight, I can still sense how one has focused the magic they were cursed with. Magus Hansa: And I sense great power from you. Power, hesitation, and confusion. Hm. Magus Hansa: You must be <Character>. Magus Hansa: And if you are here, then you must be looking for answers. Interesting. Magus Hansa: Ask away. <Character:> What is The Rose doing? What are you trying to accomplish? Magus Hansa: We are protecting the people of Greenguard, of Lore, from the atrocities of magic and magical creatures. Magus Hansa: We bear no ill-will toward any of our... guests. However, some of our members turn out quite overzealous. Magus Hansa: I do my best to control them, but I can understand their frustrations. Their pain. Can't you? Magus Hansa: Lady Jaania is doing her best to formulate an end to this plague. Magus Hansa: The people of Lore would no longer need fear for their homes and family. Magus Hansa: Their loved ones would never rise from the dead to attack, or be stolen away to be sacrificed. Magus Hansa: Their sight will never be stolen by an errant spell. <Character:> But people are afraid of The Rose. From what I've heard, you're doing more harm than good. Magus Hansa: Hmph. Magus Hansa: That sounds like a very "Falconreach" sentiment. Magus Hansa: They don't understand how much magic harms those around them. Magus Hansa: They refuse to comprehend the threat that thrives in their midst! Magus Hansa: But worry not, our orders are to leave Falconreach be. Direct orders from King Alteon. Magus Hansa: I leave it to Lady Jaania to negotiate the details. <Character:> What are you planning next? All of this preparation can't just be for show. Magus Hansa: You think I would just tell you? That I would share all our secrets? Magus Hansa: You are still a variable, <Character>. An unknown. Magus Hansa: Are you a threat? Or an asset? <Character:> Um. I'm just trying to find out what's going on. Magus Hansa: Hm. Magus Hansa: Lady Jaania may not approve, but I'd like to show you the good of our work. What The Rose has already done for the Kingdom of Greenguard. Magus Hansa: I've been called to lead a contingent of soldiers to the Sandsea. Magus Hansa: You're welcome to follow, and find out for yourself how The Rose acts for the benefit and protection of all. <Character:> So... I can just leave now? You're not going to try and stop me? Magus Hansa: You've done nothing wrong besides giving some recruits valuable training experience. I will have to send word to Swordhaven, however. Magus Hansa: Lady Jaania will be most interested to learn that you're active again. Magus Hansa: Now please, try not to harm too many of our recruits on your way out. Most of the ones here are new to the cause. Leave - returns to Magus Hansa's room. If you approach the book to the left of Magus Hansa's room: quote:
The Nature of Magic (Inside) Property of Jaania, Apprentice of Brump (Page 1) Contents: The Leyline Theory Drawing From Leylines Teleportation Magic Focus Stones Conclusion (Page 2) The Leyline Theory The most accepted theoretical model of magic in the Kingdom of Greenguard is the Leyline Model. Other cultures and fringe researchers across Lore have come up with their own theories, but this is the model that has been taught for hundreds of years. Who came up with this? Mana on Lore is contained in ley lines which spiderweb across and throughout the planet. Where these ley lines intersect are considered nexuses of mana which act as reservoirs. Towns and cities tend to be built on such locations of power. To perform feats of magic, a mage must draw on the mana contained in one of Lore's ley lines or nexuses. Which came first, the towns or the leylines? (Page 3) Drawing From Leylines In controlled amounts, mana can be safely drawn from normal nexuses and ley lines. The amount possible seems to be dependent on the mage in question. More powerful mages are able to coax more mana for use, although whether an individual's maximum amount is a result of training or natural ability is still unknown. Natural capacity, tempered by training. The largest nexus is in the center of the planet; referred to as the Mana Core. It contains the most pure mana available, as it is likely the conflux of all leylines. Conflux or source? As it is buried so deeply within Lore, as of yet, none have been able to attempt to draw directly from it. (Page 4) - contains some theoretical diagrams of leylines. Are leylines supposed to be above us? Under us? (Page 5) Students must be careful to not overstress themselves when drawing mana from leylines. Drawing more mana than one is capable of using often results in unpredictable effects, from exhaustion to spontaneous combustion, to loss of limbs, life, or sanity. While it is ultimately up to the individual mage as to how much mana they are comfortable using at once, training is important to refine one's skills and temperament. Severing a mage's connection to the leylines is an oft restricted area of research, as such experiments tend to end poorly for their subjects. There is a connection to be severed? (Page 6) Teleportation Magic Teleportation is a most tricky form of magic. Doing so requires intense focus and massive amounts of mana. Failures are commonplace and disastrous for all involved. Permanent portal gates can be constructed with much effort. However these are extremely rare, and those with the knowledge to create such wonders are not available for questioning. Very few permanent portals to the Elemental Planes have been discovered, even fewer intact and functional. Regardless of their origin, if encountered, it is highly suggested to refrain from exploratory endeavors. Where did these come from? (Page 7) However, if the dangers of teleportation magic are not enough to sate your hunger for knowledge, it is recommended to begin with small inanimate objects. Many mages have been able to master the ability of sending written scrolls or small trinkets across considerable distances, and with practice and luck, such feats are quite attainable. Should be an interesting exercise! (Page 8) Focus Stones It is possible, although difficult (as most endeavors tend to be with magic), to store mana in specialized receptacles. How large can this be scaled up? Such batteries are known as "Focus Stones". Focus stones can be drawn on, much like leylines and nexuses, reinvigorating their owners with their stored mana reserves when exhausted. How precise must a focus stone be cut? However, creating these miniature nexuses is a tricky task that leaves many an inexperienced mage comatose or drained for long periods of time. Mana inheritance? Is this mana disconnected? (Page 9) Conclusion The study of the nature of magic on Lore is a deadly, dangerous, life-changing, and rewarding field. Those mages that find themselves lucky enough to master the flow of mana are few and far between, and unlikely to share their secrets. Unfortunately, much research has been lost to time and disaster, and so further exploration of the leyline and other theories of magic must be left to those who are brave enough to risk their lives in search of greater understanding.
