With the DragonLords taking charge, the Greenguard Alliance is sent to find any surviving Dragonslayers. But the fungal growths aren't the only threat in the twisted remains of the city.

Also this week, a couple updates!
  • The Dragesvard camp is now accessible from the Book 3 Travel Map, once it has been reached for the first time.
  • A new version of the Goose fight has been added to the Dreamspace 2 board.
    • The old Goose (Extreme) has been renamed Goose (Chaos).
    • This new version, Goose (Extreme), has the same drop as Goose (Chaos)

I was blown away by the ambiance of the new quest. Kudos to Verly, Dracelix, and Dove for crafting it, it was truly breathtaking in its presentation. I really, really enjoyed it.

I'm also extremely happy that we've stepped foot into Dragesvard, and that the story is moving forward!

I'm a bit torn on the quest reward. On one hand, I'm a bit put out that we got yet another BiS statted item from a story quest - it feels like we get 1-2 such items per month now, while we got 1 BiS item from the Inn in 6 months, and no BiS items from either of the overworld bosses from Tyndur's depths . To be precise, in the past 5 months alone, we've received the following items from Story/Reimagined: Self-Containment Unit v15.5 (BiS for % based heals, bis +WIS/+END); Clawkin Clasp (tied BiS offensive, BiS metal resist); Mosscrystal Pendant (BiS Nature resist, tied BiS Dark resist; Lost Adventurer's Ring (BiS +Crit/+LUK), and Maeve's Tears (BiS -health). (We didn't get a main story/reimagined in August.) This isn't even counting the BiS LUK and BiS +Mainstat weapons (and the BiS +Int Helm) from seasonal quests. In total, in the last 5 months, we've received 8 BiS items from the story/seasonal releases. Not only is this pace of power creep probably not sustainable in the long term, it also makes each new bis item feel less special. This is in contrast to 2020, where a new BiS item from either the story or the inn would be an exciting new event.

That being said, I do appreciate that the new helmet is at least not strictly better than its alternatives. With -7.5 net Health resist but +30 END, it's better than Vilmor's Helm (which has -10 net Health but no END) for % based heals, as the 2.5% less healing from health res is countered by the ~5% increase in HP; however, it's worse than Vilmor's helm for fixed heals like potions. While previous items like Mosscrystal or Clawkin Clasp were just better than their alternatives, this one has some amount of trade offs, which I think is a good direction to go in.

A nice start for what looks to be a promising storyline.

Some passing thoughts:
spoiler:

- Lestrade causes some inter-Alliance conflict that's not centered around racism, and I kind of appreciate that? So far the Alliance has been sufficiently vague on its command structure (when Victoria is not present), and I can absolutely see a militaristic organization like the Dragonlords having an issue with that.

- Ostromir brings up an incredibly valid concern. It's surprisingly rare to find long-term hazards acknowledged in a video game. Naturally, it didn't stop me from eating that suspicious glowing mushroom

- Draco's comment on his containment unit failing if he grows is played for laughs, but... it's actually kind of important? Not even the unit failure itself (though I kind of shudder at the possibility of a Hollow!Draco), but the problems with inter-character communication. Draco brought up a valid concern - yet nobody outside the hero could even understand him. I hope to see the issue addressed at some point, by the Magisters of no one else.


The first portal brought us a titan to dwarf all titans. Second, an energizer bunny invasion.

I look forward to what the Doverly cook up for us this time!

It was interesting seeing Kord. If you've gone through the Mount Ashfall Saga in AQ3D, you'll recognize him, and his importance.

@AstralCodex I'd say the item quality of recent story releases have been balanced if you ask me. Any outstanding stats in one area such as elemental resists or offence has meant very little or nothing in others. To it seems like the devs are taking a different approach to story rewards; they're of use to specific builds but aren't equipped for general situations and don't necessarily make Inn rewards redundant. With that said though, The Self-Containment Unit definitely trumps the Magi Guard Helm overall, as its lack of LUK and CHA is much more preferable to the Guard Helm's Crit and Bonus penalty.

I thought for sure this was a The Last of Us situation but it seems the Hollow are more of an attempt at mimicry from the fungus, rather than an infection. What a relief!

And I had a feeling that guy was Kord! Ashfall is my favourite part of AQ3D so it was cool to him and a similar design for the Dragonslayers.

It's both amazing and horrifying to visit Dragesvard again and see it totally destroyed. So many childhood memories from this place to see it absolutely into despair.

Kord's character introduction is curious, given he appears on AQ3D and
spoiler:

in the end of Ashfall saga, he takes Galanoth's job

Can't wait to see more interactions with him!

After taking a break from the game and coming back (who knows how many times) catching up to the main story has been spectacular, I absolutely love this game. It is admittedly more fun playing in bursts to get the full story in one go.

I am excited to see the story unfold more. Thanks to the Royal Resistance missions I was shown how lacking my previous classes were and hopped on Technomancer (had to train it from scratch), after finding out how overpowered it is, now I get to enjoy the game even more.

I love Magus Hansa's continued development and am looking forward to see if Captain Lestrad can come to terms with losing control and accepting a more coordinated approach with his alliance members rather than his overly strict hierarchy mentality.

Whoa am I late to the party

Some thoughts:

Lestrad is still a buttface

Draco sliding down the ice was fun

On the matter of the fungus, while the Hollow fortunately are not former living creatures that essentially have had their bodies infected with fungal spores and repurposed as essentially as horrifically enslaved canon fodder/spore seed beds, I'm still not wholly convinced we won't end up with cordyceps or flood scenario with the the Hollow or that the spores at the very least won't cause an immediate problem, but I guess I'll have to see what source of all of this before I'm fully convinced. Can't say I'm exactly confident in the self containment unit's item description either, but nobody tell Ostromir and Vseslava I said that.

Well at least this time people are taking precautions to a foreign substance that they're aren't sure of the exact nature of rather than just winging it and breathing the air like there's no tomorrow.

There is of course the very curious and perhaps concerning note of all in this quest and that is the mention of Darkness being involved in the fungus as much as nature magic. This makes sense as fungus in the real world does grow better in dark and moist areas as they do not operate through photosynthesis like plants do and even at times can have their growth diminished if they're in area with too much light. From in universe perspective this is noteworthy because as this fungus came from the rifts, it would mean in came from somewhere from the Plains and is potentially yet another remnant from the Exalted War. What has me curious though if darkness and nature magic was used in its creation than is this plausibly a weapon the Elements came up with on their side of the war? A magic the Elements essentially refined.

I don't think it would be too out of the question that in their efforts to destroy the Exalted they would put their heads together to come up with means that would combine their powers, beyond like conventional means, to destroy Exalted controlled towns or cities in the Elemental Plains that would force citizens to then flee to other areas that haven't fallen yet but without the knowledge that they would be carrying these spores with them which would cause the mayhem and havoc they just escaped from to start all over again. Not only would you have basically ticking time bombs ready to go off and destroy and repurpose built structures when people finally start to feel they're safe but you also potentially have a supply of soldiers that will mimic the likeness of the people you're attacking and unnerve them. Basically keeping this patter up until they had nowhere else to run but Ehr'Ishin

Hearing GenoKratos can halt the growth is a bit comforting but hearing in general the Great Dragons have a bit of sway over the elements they're aligned to does make me curious just by how much in truth that can extend for all of them. Obviously Dekanor probably wasn't going to hold much sway for anything Shadowsychte related, I think, but I do wonder if they could have countered their spread a little while they were in progress in Greenguard at times.

That's an interesting thought. I hadn't considered that this may be a biological weapon used for or against the Exalted during their war. We know (or at least have reasonable grounds to assume) that the Tytan whale above Swordhaven was probably forced to fight for the Exalted against it's creators judging by that " Stardriver" and it's design. So it's quite plausible that the source of this fungus may be another relic of that time.

I keep thinking about what Hansa said about the source as well. If it really is deep underground, below the seafloor, does that mean the Rift is there too? How will we be able to close it with it being so out of reach? Heck, how did the Magesterium get those tetrahedral focus point thingies down there anyway? Did Bolemira drop them over Tyndur's Depths on her way back to Azaveyr? Is that why Tynderspawn are fleeing the depths? Will I ever post speculation about the story without so many blasted questions at the end????

Thing is we did see the Dragesvard Rift well right behind Dragesvard before it had drifted away from its original location so presumably it's still at that spot unless the Rift somehow moved with the shrooms then we might still be in trouble here on that front. The problem seems to be that the source of the thing that generates the Hollows and the giant mushrooms is what's deep under the ocean now. The problem as you mentioned is the Tyndurspawn because presumably if it was that below to make something like that be forced to flee it's home then it's spread way too far throughout the ocean floor already and likely too deeply rooted which unless attacking source stops it we're going to have long term threat on our hands.
