Lament

A piece of paper, stained purple with grief
A broken string, a fast decaying leaf
A ruined book, now stained yellow with age
Filled with words long faded from the page

A former sword, now melted mass of gray
A polished sheen, long since rusted away
A terror once, now only lingering fear
What was today, now distant yester-year

Once proud, a long since crumbled tower
Once fair, a long since desiccated flower
A dying tree, its ancient branches bent
A ruined bell peals out its death lament

Bereft

The fire of our love burned bright
Far beyond childish games
Like moths we were drawn to the light
Of each others flames

The passion filled us utterly
Bespectacled our eyes
So all around us seemed to be
A perfect Paradise

But then that day, oh wretched day
When cruel fate did scheme
That, in snatching you away
It could shatter the dream

So now, though you are long since gone
I’m left to struggle still
But all that was an Eden once
Is now naught but a Hell

Knowledge

Sometimes we seem to think that we
Know all there is to know
Believe that we can place all facts
In neatly ordered rows

But then something doth come along
That throws it all askew
Then we must drop our former thoughts
And start to learn anew

Thus we’re forced to reassess
And in the end, admit
That though we may know many things
There’s much we don’t know yet

Simple Gift of Love

I hold you child in my arms
And think of all you've been through
Wonder how I ever could
Try to make it up to you

There are many things that I could give
But most are not enough
So take this most important gift
A simple gift of love

I know your past is filled with pain
More than I can comprehend
But I hope that what I have to give
In a small way makes amends

There are many things that I could give
But most are not enough
So take this most important gift
A simple gift of love

An Angel Weeps

As sinks the sun doth Eden sink to grief,
Drowning beneath the deluge of its tears.
Amidst its pooling shade an Angel weeps,
A haunting dirge of long forgotten fears.

She sits, a marble statue in the park,
Bemoaning that Life set so high a cost.
An amber teardrop stains the gath’ring dark,
The last remembrance of what once was lost.

The Wind Does Not Forget

The wind does not forget,
When it first touched Adam’s cheek.
I’m sure a million years from now--
It will remember me.

The wind does not forget,
When man, astride the sea--
Contrived a sail, and caught it,
And danced before its breeze.

The wind does not forget,
When we watched the birds that sing.
And sought to rise above ourselves--
With artificial wings.

The wind does not forget,
When we sought our own demise
Dropped bombs that slipped betwixt its grasp--
To forfeit our own lives.

The wind does not forget,
When at last, we all were dead.
And it was left to wander o'er--
A barren earth instead.

No, indeed,
The wind does not forget.

Sing Softly a Tune of Alabaster Light

Sing softly a tune of alabaster light
Of stars that danced forlorn along their way
Amidst the empty recesses of night

Sing of the moon, flawed orb both pale and bright
That showered silver rays upon your face
Sing softly a tune of alabaster light

Sing of the perfect, immortal and trite
Novae that flashed only to fade away
Amidst the empty recesses of night

Sing of the wanderer, the meteorite
Ever denied the chance to pause, to stay
Sing softly a tune of alabaster light

Sing of the heavenly art, that in its spite
Makes all our efforts seem a worthless waste
Amidst the empty recesses of night

Sing of them all, the best of dark and bright
The souls that crossed your path along the way
Sing softly a tune of alabaster light
Amidst the empty recesses of night

Curious

The human life is a curious thing
A brief eternity
Like bird for but a moment perching
In eternal tree
But short years fly, and it takes wing
Nobody can say where
Perhaps its unrequited searching
Finds an answer there

After perching, after searching
Finds an answer there

We Are the Dead

We are the dead, and here we lie
Bedecked in blood-stained clothes
Our vacant eyes gape toward the sky
Where float black-feathered crows

We are the dead, passed briefly by
For lack of time and will
Our burial must come in time
The war, it rages still

We are the dead, now long forgot
Yet still we lack repose
Untouched, the eyes that watch us rot
Are those of black-winged crows

Frostval

Once again, the time draws near
Children come and hear the tale
The air outside is cold and clear
But warmed by glowing fire here
I’ll tell you of Frostval

For in this special time of year
O’er wood, and hill, and field, and dale
All people, be they far or near
Spend time with those that they hold dear
To celebrate Frostval

It is a time of joy and love
A time for sharing food and ale
The stars high up in heav’n above
Like golden light, reflect the love
Poured forth during Frostval

Presents are shared, and gifts exchanged
Bright shining swords, and coats of mail
And one and all, our hearts are changed
Priorities are rearranged
Our focus is Frostval

It matter not whether we’re good
Or if to evil’s call we hail
For once we all act as we should
Our quarrels have away been put
In honor of Frostval

Thirteen Ways of Looking at Trees

I
Great things can come from small beginnings
Much like the biggest trees can grow
From the smallest seeds

II
Those who truly aid their fellow men
Are like a tree, in whose supporting branches
The blast-beruffled birds can take refuge
From the violent storms of life

III
Nature is like a tree
In that but one trunk
Supports hundreds of branches, thousands of leaves

IV
We must be like a tree
And firmly set our roots in stable soil
Set for ourselves a firm foundation
Lest we be washed away

V
I hold an admiration for
Those who, when caught in the winds of strife
Don’t snap or shatter, like brittle panes of glass
But rather bend, like slender willow trees

VI
The apple does not fall from the tree
But it can from its landing place be carried

VII
The tree goes through a cycle every year
Much like the cycle that our lives become
It springs to life, slowly matures
Ripens with age, then seems to die
Only to flower again

VIII
Much as a tree absorbs its energy
From the yellow radiance of the sun
So too do we, as humans, absorb joy
From laughter shared with friends

IX
Trees coexist in peaceful harmony
Sharing the earth, the silver rain that falls
I wish we were as wise

X
As trees, each year, shed leaves no longer needed
So too should we shed that we which need not

XI
On a hot, hot day, I sat beneath a tree
And appreciated its shade
So freely given, no recompense desired
To all who wander by

XII
Trees are celebratory sorts
In honor of a another year past they
Dance with the Northern Wind

XIII
Sometimes I wonder
What it would be like to live
For thousands of years
The Methuselah Tree knows

Twinkle

Twinkle, twinkle,
Darkness wrinkles
Folded by the piercing light

Twinkle, twinkle,
Stars o’ersprinkle
In the vast expanse of night

Swish, swish,
Make a wish
On the star that arcing falls

Hush, hush
Ease the rush
For a downy pillow calls

Sunset

Sunlight trickles through the shades
Pooling on the tufted floor
Late afternoon’s lethargic rays
Bend and break, and burn no more

Taking on a softer hue
A less intensive glow
The sky drinks in a deeper blue
And night’s first stars begin to show

Sometimes I Cannot Help But Sing

Sometimes I cannot help but sing

It's not like I'm trying
To carry out a plan
Or perform for an audience

If anything, I am the audience

As if the song that comes bubbling up
Like water from a mountain spring
Is meant for me to drink

And in the words and music
Harmoniously mixed
Is such exultant joy

Sometimes I cannot help but sing

Love: A Fragment

Flittering, fluttering
Doubting, wondering
Does she really feel that way?

Bumping, turning
Guessing, learning
What am I supposed to say?

Empathy

On the days when the rains come
And it all just falls apart
When you’re left with naught but empty hands
And an emptier heart

When shadows cloud your teary eyes
And you cannot see the light
I’m waiting here, with open arms
To tell you “it’s alright”

To hold you close, until the storms
That plagued you pass you by
To still your fears, and catch your tears
Till you have no more to cry

For I know that were our roles reversed
You’d do the same for me
The beauty of a friendship lies
In its empathy

Miracle

There’s a poet in all of us, to some degree
And beauty, if we choose to see
There’s music in us, if we let it sing
And hope for what tomorrow brings

So in the times when you feel frail
And wonder why you’re here
Do not forget the miracle
That stares back from the mirror
