Goony -> Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:21:28)

Hello All,

I am writing this to discuss the plight of Mercenaries. As most of you are aware we had the Frysteland War recently where there was a campagn to "Save the Yeti". The Exiles failed to achieve this and the full repercussions of that are yet to play out in the storyline. The Yetis are now being transformed into forces for evil and we can only watch in horror as they are mutated.

The plight of Mercenaries is almost as bad, they are almost extinct at level 34 with varium and non-varium players avoiding that class at all cost.

What does this mean?

Well in terms of balance it is horrific, having a class deserted means that the diversity in the game is reduced and the mercenary class is one of the keys to the reducing the Cyber Hunter and Tech Mages population. The Mercenary class should be able to reduce the influence of these classes in the game, thus providing a more varied PvP population. We all know that when you click 1v1 these days the main classes you will encounter are Tech Mages and Cyber Hunters with a sprinkling of Tactical Mercenaries, Bounty Hunters and Blood Mages...

So, I want to ask 3 questions that will help refine the discussion:

At level 30-34, in PvP mode, how often would you see a varium Mercenary?
Do you think it is easy to defeat that class?
Would you like me to make a video to show you the full plight of Mercenaries?

Thanks in advance for your feedback, I know that not all people will want to see the Mercanary class rise from the dead, but please keep your posts on topic. Humor is allowed :)

NO BALANCE SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

liy010 -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:32:24)

Mercs are easy to kill because they can't regain Energy...

Now that I think about it, I've never seen a level 30+ Merc in a long time...

Elf Priest JZaanu -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:35:22)

I have just been notified that Elf Gypsy JZaadu has joined the cause. As my sister alt, we will find balance for this ancient class to compete once again.

Renegade Reaper -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:36:27)

At level 30-34, in PvP mode, how often would you see a varium Mercenary? I've seen maybe two or three since the balance update.

Do you think it is easy to defeat that class? if its not used properly, then yes its easy to kill. if they are true pros, they can still keep up with the
new classes though.

Would you like me to make a video to show you the full plight of Mercenaries? i think we all know that merc needs to be updated.
but if you made a video, then i'd watch it

i think all classes should have a good chance at winning battles, whatever mode they play in.

Silver Sky Magician -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:36:29)

Actually I never really understood why the Mercenary Class came to be perceived as a UP class. Just before Tactical Mercs came out, complaints were rife about the power of tank and strength mercs. As far as I know, other than the change to Hybrid Armour and Field Medic, the merc class hasn't been touched at all. I don't see why a class considered OP before the release of the new classes can now be considered UP. My rationalisation has always been that the merc class only seemed UP because it was dwarfed by the Tactical Merc class, and because so many mercs class changed to that class. In actuality, it isn't. I have seen the strength merc build making a partial comeback, with considerable success, for example.

So what do you think?

Elf Priest JZaanu -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:42:26)

The issue is, tactical merc took many of the best qualities of merc, and added the powerful additions from mage and bh, Tac Merc became the improved version of Merc. What specifically needs to be done, I am not sure. The Merc class can be broken down by all classes except BM.

Silver Sky Magician -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:49:14)

The new skill Mercs are going to get which will replace Blood Shield apparently allows them to have an advantage in terms of rage. I think that might spark a revival in the strength merc build (just great, more strength spamming) and perhaps even the tank merc build (surgical strike decreasing opponent's rage, new skill increasing its own). I don't think there's much point discussing about what should be done when reforms are already underway.

AQWPlayer -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:51:25)

Someone might as well pay mercenaries for their services.

ND Mallet -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:53:04)

Personally, I see cries out for buffs like this a challenge issued directly at me to come try this class out for yourself. I think I shall. I've been missing my favorite build of all time(Strength/Support Field Commander/Artillery Build). I was going to make it for TLM but I think I'll enjoy the merc challenge more.

DeathGuard -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 0:55:53)

G00ny last time I fought you, you beated me with it, you're a great player and I would like to see more mercs to play with other builds than tanking.
I will help your cause, I will start playing once again on my lvl 29 merc Cyberbakio

At level 30-34, in PvP mode, how often would you see a varium/nonvarium Mercenary? Varium mercenaries none, 3-5 mercenaries per 2 days
Do you think it is easy to defeat that class?Depends on the build they're using, if they spam, they're screwed against me, if not it will be an interesting fight.
Would you like me to make a video to show you the full plight of Mercenaries? Would be nice but I'd already live it, thanks for that rare opportunity

Goony -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 1:00:52)

@ Silver Sky, it's been a long time between drinks for the Mercenary class... Yes, what you say is true to an extent, but prior to the last update it was almost impossible for a Mercenary to beat a CH or TIM due to the skill combinatios that they used. Some players have switched, but the advent of the biobrog robot has again shifted that balance away from the Mercanary class. While, what you say about strength is true, iRhian and Paranoid Dreamer have used the strength build with some success, but it is in no way as effective accross all the classes as a CH or TM... In the main, the only way to have any decent strategy with a Mercenary these days is to have a decent heal, something all classes can do.

The Mercenary skill tree is often rendered useless due to the energy drain attacks and not having any regenerative skill other than the extremely high cost surgical strike. Even that skill is ineffective, due to hybrid armor and the high damage attacks of the other classes meaning that rage often occurs before it can be deployed...

When you say the Mercenary class hasn't been touched, you are neglecting to account for the change to the way melee attacks are calculated. This had a serious knock on effect on intimidate and the energy required to use these attacks to do the same damage. Also the reduced crit % defence ignore, reduced rage % defence ignore and removal of stun % defence ignore effected outcomes for Mercenaries. While these are not specific nerfs to the Mercanary class, it has impacted on them the most...

Hope that helps with some background ;)

Zeoth -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 1:05:41)

Last time I saw a level 30-34 Varium mercenary was awhile ago, it was Illuminator. We had a very tough fight and it led to my defeat, i am happy to say I lost to a player of his caliber

When I see the class I see a shadow of the former nightmare I use to be. They are still pretty tough but less difficult than I will say Tms and such.

And as for a vid, I've lived it I'm fine.

Stabilis -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 1:14:55)

Mercenaries are pro-offense. There are no viable skills to profess in defense for. A skill such as Bunker Buster could use a nerf (for example removing the critical chance, or both the critical chance and defense ignorance)... in return I would give Mercenaries a defensive skill, perhaps a limited barrier that absorbs all forms of damage, cannot be stacked, costs no heal/energy except for 1 turn to use, dissipates when the barrier exhausts out of shielding points.

Example:

Mercenary lv 30 VS. Tactical Mercenary lv 30

95 Health________________95 Health

Turn 1: Mercenary casts Fortify (30 points of shielding)... Tactical Mercenary casts Double Strike (20 damage calculated)

Fortify's shielding takes 20 points of damage, it is now at 10 points of shielding.

95 Health________________95 Health

Turn 2: Mercenary casts Artillery (20 damage calculated)... Tactical Mercenary casts Sidearm (15 damage calculated)

Fortify's shielding takes 10 points of damage, Fortify dissipates and Mercenary takes 5 points damage from the remainder.

90 Health________________75 Health

Goony -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 1:18:13)

@ Depressed, I specifically asked for no balance suggestions, they don't belong in this topic... :(
What I was trying to guage was the level of support for the Mercenary class and was wondering why it had been abandoned by the community.

@ ND, this was not directed at you! I'm pretty sure Delta V doesn't revolve around a moose and I also think that you sometimes can't see the forest for the trees...

Good luck with your build, I will also be interested to see the results of some people trying the class again. Thanks for the feedback so far :)

@BlueKat (below), I was trying to avoid this becoming a discussion about balance suggestions for Mercenaries, this has been covered in the balance thread many times over!

BlueKatz -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 1:19:58)

What do you think about the new Rage Passive? I think it's not the best idea at all. The problem that Merc use up a lot of Skill Point I can't image how Merc can make any other build with Rage Passive beside BB Sup build

midnight assassin -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 3:35:14)

^ Maybe they are planning that mercs will be an anti-tank class.

Sageofpeace -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 8:26:02)

we just need a new passive really bad,as we are the class is on good on 2vs2 AND THAT IS IF WE GET A GOOD PARTNER

Oba -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 11:13:29)

I am a Merc now. And I think its way better then BM (as I was before I changed to Merc). Yet I only find it possible to use a STR build.

TurkishIncubus -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 12:21:40)

What? reducing TM population??? i face with 5 BM in every 10 battle :/

and mods already told they will buff merc (probably in 6 months :P)

Oba -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 12:33:30)

^ True dat! There so so many STR BM's now, yet they all suck [:)]

XxKirachanXx -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 13:27:41)

Actually, for me as a lv 30 merc, I'm not even sure if it's worth switching to a tac merc.
I would be parting with 50k credits, which could be put toward a skull card or enhancements.
Not to mention maul, which has helped me win many a battle.
With a high strength/decent defences, with a high level heal, and a buster to use if I get rage before the energy is gone ;3
I still feel that I have a fighting chance against a varium player at a similar level ;D

Cookielord12 -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 13:36:44)

Congrats Mercs are getting a buff

Remorse -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 13:38:59)

I vote nerfing all other classes down :D

Power and buffs are actuly a large cuase for balance problems.

Eg. Oh no the STR build we buffed last weak has become oped, lets buff the other classes to be more powerful....

Oh no those classes became oped.... lets buff the other clases....

Oh no! e.e

Hun Kingq -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 18:46:30)

One problem I see with players playing the merc class is bad builds, they have two very powerful non block-able attacks, bunker buster and Artillery strike I have not yet seen a high tech high support build. Another thing they don't use is Atom smasher on other players but me.

So a challenge to all players that plays a merc make a high tech/support build don't be strength copycats be original experiment.

PD -> RE: Save the Mercenary Campaign (3/14/2012 18:55:54)

There used to be extremely powerful Support Merc builds which dominated 2v2 (almost all 2v2 leaders were support mercs). Artillery strike used to be a near double kill when used with rage due to the high dmg + huge def ignoring.
