Daring Design Notes

The Dread War is coming! Tensions between Legion and Forces are at an all-time high, and Delta V is poised to explode into all-out war June 21st. Will you fight for Freedom with the Exiles or battle in the name of Order alongside the Legion? This Friday, we will be launching the complete Dread Plains area, along with a new map / navigation system. Travelling the entirety of Delta V has never been quicker or easier!

Choose Your Destiny!

Starting this Friday, all EpicDuelists will be called upon to select an alignment to participate in the upcoming war. For those of you just joining us, this means you must choose to fight for the Exiles or Legion. I have taken the liberty of describing the corresponding alignments thusly:
    Exile

    The Exiles seek to overthrow Baelius and liberate Delta V from his tyrannical regime. To cast off this oppressive yolk and ensure a future free of terror and corruption, The Exiles must first defeat Baelius’ fiercely loyal minions: The Legion.

    Legion

    The Legion believe that obedience and order are the keys to Delta V’s salvation. However, this dream cannot be achieved without first destroying the world’s greatest threat to peace and stability: The Exiles.

    Choosing an alignment is not as simple as “good” and “evil” – both alignments have similar goals, but drastically different means of achieving them. Choose carefully – you will be able to change alignment later, however, to encourage loyalty, the price will be steep!

Bye-Bye Battle Tokens*

After much deliberation, as of next week’s update (June 21) Battle Tokens are being discontinued. Initially, Battle Tokens were intended as a currency based entirely on a player’s effort alone, since they could not be purchased with Varium packages and could only be earned through battle victories. However, since we no longer offer credits with packages, making credits an effort currency, it no longer makes sense to keep Tokens. They will be replaced by credits at a fixed rate, so you'll see a nice little windfall based on how many tokens you currently have. Token Boost will also be removed, and achievements will cost credits rather than Tokens. Missions awarding battle tokens will be altered to award credits rather than tokens at a fixed rate.

War Banners*

As we phase out Battle Tokens, War Flags will be transitioned into War Objectives, which will be captured and controlled by Faction and alignment battles, not donations. For the time being, however, the top contributor of each War Flag will own the War Objective for that Faction's alignment. So, if the Legion Faction “The Sparkling Vampires” holds the War Flag in “The Land of Terrible Fiction,” then they would be the first to claim the War Objective for the Legion in that area. But we are making these Objectives more challenging than simply dumping Battle Tokens into a flag. Also, there will be a control cap on each Objective, meaning that an alignment cannot build and insurmountable lead on an Objective.

These new War Objectives will come in the form of radar stations, turrets, shield generators, propaganda towers, and many other tactically valuable assets. Many regions of Delta V will have one or more of these Objectives ripe for the capturing. Some Objectives will even grant you bonuses toward defending or attacking other objectives, creating an interesting hierarchy of Objectives and adding new strategies to the global war.

*These features are still in development and the details may change by June 21st. We will keep you informed of any changes.

Delta V World Tour 2013

Travelling has never been easier. In order to allow players to jump quickly to each War Objective, we added multiple jump points on each region. You will be able to see at a glance which areas are contested, and which are firmly under Legion or Exile control.

Bike Night

Our special guest artist, the great Nulgath, has been gracious enough to lend his skills to EpicDuel for the construction of an epic new bike! Strike fear in the hearts of your enemies as you tear across the battlefields in this demonic creation!

Insect Facts Yay!

Most people while visiting the plant store would be outraged to find a late-instar caterpillar on one of the store's plants for sale. Most people however, are not me. Papilo polyxenes or the Eastern Black Swallowtail Butterfly lays its eggs on members of the Apiaceae or carrot family. I discovered my new friend happily nomming on some curly parsley, but females will oviposit on carrots, dill, Queen Anne's Lace, and fennel but will also accept rue as a more novel host. The early instar caterpillars resemble bird droppings in shape and coloration, but after molting are characterized by black bands and yellow spots. Short-photoperiod (fall) caterpillars that will overwinter as pupae are brown and long-photoperiod (summer) caterpillars who do not pupate so long are green. One pretty cool thing about these guys is that the caterpillars have a gland held behind the head capsule called the osmenterium. It's an orange, forked gland that resembles horns or a snake's tongue (swallowtail caterpillars tend to have characteristics that are snakelike to fool predators) and smells pretty terrible. After the caterpillar has eaten all he or she can possibly eat, it will pupate within a suspended chrysalis, which can be either green or brown depending on the environment. Upon eclosion (emergence from the pupal casing) the butterfly's gender can be determined by wing markings. Wings of both sexes are mainly black with a conspicuous orange spot, but males have a yellow band at the bottom of the hindwing and females have an iridescent blue band. This species is common throughout the North American continent and is the state butterfly of Oklahoma.

Few questions:

  • Will the Token : Credit ratio be the same for achievements as it is for the transfer of Tokens to Credits?
  • With no Tokens, does that mean our Credit rewards will be a bit higher (refer to fixed ratio for the transfer)?
  • Since Factions require Tokens for Flags, will these be completely revamped? I do not think we'll use Credits to maintain a Flag but who knows..
  • What is in this week's release? We were told passive to active skills change will happen before the war so there won't be a repeat of GYT and imbalance but there's no mention of this.

    Thanks in advance!

    I told you there is no such thing as evil and good in this game!

    ninja'd people that said that legion is evil and exile is good.

    Khalix -> RE: Epicduel Design Notes June, 13, 2013 (6/13/2013 11:11:16)

    The shifting of token missions to credit missions should help a bit with people complaining about the low rate of credit income.

    akiratoriyama -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 11:12:09)

    Makes me more confused whether to buy some cheevos or wait for credit conversion

    Ranloth -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 11:16:50)

    I am confused as well, akiratoriyama. XD Hence my question with the conversion.

    Khalix, it is a fix only if the Tokens will be transfered into Credits; so we will get more Credits in PvP to make up for the loss of Tokens. If it's only to boost missions + compensate for our saved Tokens, it's a mere band-aid that benefits new players. Those who did the missions for Tokens were played for suckers since it won't benefit us. So it's not exactly a fix unless we get a bit more Credits per battle. *although, Varium will be even less of a shortcut if you look at Core prices - totally not linking to my thread*

    Khalix -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 11:28:40)

    I'm thinking that the return would be similar to what happened at the start of Omega- The (partially) returned investment for enhancements.

    If it's just the missions, then I'm rather glad I practically didn't do any token missions.

    Lord Noonien Soong -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 11:30:56)

    Awesome! That makes much more sense instead of 2 seperate currencies

    kosmo -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 11:48:31)

    It sais that flags won t be captured with donations, so i m fine with tokens removal, but if archiviments will start to cost 15k they have to increase the credit reward from battles or this will be just another disappointing nerf to credits that already are hard to earn.

    Charfade -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 11:48:47)

    Will the Token : Credit ratio be the same for achievements as it is for the transfer of Tokens to Credits?
    As far as I know, the final ratio rate of exchange hasn't been confirmed yet. Rabble will hopefully fill in more... I blame my inability to understand Maths

    With no Tokens, does that mean our Credit rewards will be a bit higher (refer to fixed ratio for the transfer)?
    Blarg, I couldn't answer this one yet, I think Rabble has more Maths to go over.

    Since Factions require Tokens for Flags, will these be completely revamped? I do not think we'll use Credits to maintain a Flag but who knows..
    Flags are getting re-purposed completely. They will still have a huge impact on factions. Especially for the upcoming war. Influence will be a huge driver to the faction overhaul system.

    What is in this week's release? We were told passive to active skills change will happen before the war so there won't be a repeat of GYT and imbalance but there's no mention of this.
    This weeks release is all the back end stuffs to prep for the war. You will have to chose your alignment this week. And this is a permanent choice going forward, unless you chose to switch sides as a steep cost. You'll be able to see all of the Dread Plains map screens, HUGE overhall to the current EpicDuel world map ( Its gone HD thanks to NW's high-tech geography instruments ) Titan also sneaked in some interface adjustments to frequently used buttons.

    As far as Active skills go, this is a Rabble Q, he's going to fill in that for you shortly in a follow up post. ^^

    Also I be checking in from time to time because ALOT of things are changing and I know you all will have tons of new questions. Which I'll do my very best to answer.

    Edit: Side note, anyone that would like to have any questions answered its best to ask in bullet form like format Trans did. Its easy to read and understand what your asking in this manner :)

    Ranloth -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:01:06)

    Ah. Ain't that bad since we still get a "brief" update of the new map + expanding of the Dread Plains which would have to be done sooner or later (better sooner to avoid delays)! Interface adjustments sound quite interesting as well, I wonder what they are. :3

    I can't say I'm pleased with it since it won't affect the PvP experience at all + lack of balance changes (passive to active) will mean okay balance for yet another week or two but the same old PvP. On the other hand, if the passive change will be postponed until later date, it gives the Testers + Devs to balance the skills out and test thoroughly thus not messing it up and causing imbalance (which is a good thing :P)!

    I do hope the War will change my view on it and make things interesting - especially with many Faction changes that were mentioned! Let's hope at least. I wouldn't want to end up quitting the game due to various reasons like I did with DF sometime ago.. :/

    Lastly, I shall see if Credit rewards will get boosted up even by a little. The pricing on certain items is outrageous and flawed in certain areas, and the lack of PvP drops which made Credits easier to come by in Delta did cripple it a bit more so it'd be nice to see even a little boost in Credit rewards just to make it a bit better. Only flaw - as I've already mentioned - would be Varium and the definition of shortcut (again, refer to flawed pricing + 'EpicDuel's Economy' thread).

    Thanks for answering the questions, Charfade (and soon Rabble)!

    kosmo -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:01:58)

    Even if archiviments cost 1 credit they are costing more than before.I don t understand who benefits of this....or maybe I do?

    RabbleFroth -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:16:58)

    quote:

    Will the Token : Credit ratio be the same for achievements as it is for the transfer of Tokens to Credits?

    Unsure yet. We have rough ideas of how the conversions will work, but we wanted to get player feedback on the general idea of getting rid of Tokens before we really drilled into the details.

    quote:

    With no Tokens, does that mean our Credit rewards will be a bit higher (refer to fixed ratio for the transfer)?

    Still discussing how to handle this. I'll try to get a more concrete answer out by the end of the day.

    quote:

    Since Factions require Tokens for Flags, will these be completely revamped? I do not think we'll use Credits to maintain a Flag but who knows..

    To follow up with Charfade's post, Flags are being revamped yes, and they will be controlled by doing actual battles on the map they are on.

    quote:

    We were told passive to active skills change will happen before the war so there won't be a repeat of GYT and imbalance but there's no mention of this.

    My fault for being quiet on this front. This has been put on hold to work full-time on the war system. Good progress has been made here, but the new alignment war is a much higher priority. Would like to revisit once things have settled down on that. So much to do, so little time!

    kosmo -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:23:40)

    Flags being controlled doing battles in that area.I love this, people wont be only hanging out at slayer and oz w6.

    Yo son -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:26:53)

    No offense, but before you guys decide to introduce another controversial step in the game, this might be more controversial than removing enhancement considering I don't see the point; have you stop to consider that this is out of the blue? when was the last time some chevos that actually cost tokens was released? How about those that have been saving them up for just for the purpose of buying awesome chevos?

    King Helios -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:45:02)

    I'm a bit peeved. My faction has 253 flag captures. Will this just get wiped away? What about All-Time Flag Capture? Thanks!

    Calogero -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:47:12)

    This is like Xbox One... We are getting things we didn't ask for =/

    ^^

    Very true lol. Xbox all about TV -.-''''.
    Too bad ps3 cuss them saying ''Ps3 isn't made for entertainment, It's made for games''.

    martinsen5 -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:52:11)

    @Calogero, that's because it's not YOUR game..?

    Calogero -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 12:58:49)

    Everything is about Supply and Demand... If you don't know this than you know little about how things go in the world.
    Tell me, who here ever asked for Tokens to go non existant? We did ask for Tokens only shops but not the removal of it.
    For more proof, read posts about xbox one, which doesn't know what the subject above is all about

    Ranloth -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 13:02:44)

    That's why this was posted. It's not confirmed they will go away and everything may change, hence why it says so in DNs and Rabble wanting to get player feedback before making the change. You're doing exactly what Devs want, giving your feedback.

    Mother1 -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 13:02:47)

    @ calogero

    And that Demand is what ruined the game IMO especially with many biased balance requests due to some people being lazy and wanting the staff nerf stuff rather then them finding their existing counters.

    Also that is the staff oh i don't know thinking for themselves since it is their game! We didn't ask for a lot of things but the staff brought them upon us because they wanted to.

    Ranloth -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 13:08:17)

    Erm... I don't think that's what Calogero meant with Demand and Supply. I'll link you to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand

    That's what he's meant by Demand and Supply. Not players demanding stuff and Devs listening to them (too much), such as balance issues. >.>

    Clutch -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 13:33:18)

    Wow this is a huge change, and since credits are an effort currency now, I can see where the idea of tokens can be redundant. A few questions:

    What will happen to the all time flag captures? Will it remain and there just be a different way of capturing these flags?

    Under the column of tokens under a faction page, will that column be removed completely?
    (I think it'd be awesome if perhaps the amount of tokens you donated could transfer into influence as the war cannons once did)

    RabbleFroth -> RE: =ED= June 13th, 2013 - Daring Design Notes (6/13/2013 13:56:48)

    quote:

    How about those that have been saving them up for just for the purpose of buying awesome chevos?

    We would convert those remaining tokens into Credits, which you could then use for Cheevos, or weapons, or whatever else you want.

    quote:

    I'm a bit peeved. My faction has 253 flag captures. Will this just get wiped away? What about All-Time Flag Capture? Thanks!

    They will not go away. There will still be Flag Captures in the new system, but the way you get them will be a bit different (and interesting, we think). Those with current Flag Captures will likely be at a bit of an advantage starting out.

    quote:

    @Calogero, that's because it's not YOUR game..?

    Not a fair argument. An MMO isn't a closed experience, and the players should be an important factor in the evolution of the game.

    quote:

    What will happen to the all time flag captures? Will it remain and there just be a different way of capturing these flags?

    There will be a different method of getting Flag Captures, but the current amount your Faction has accrued will not be reset or deleted.

    quote:

    Under the column of tokens under a faction page, will that column be removed completely?
    (I think it'd be awesome if perhaps the amount of tokens you donated could transfer into influence as the war cannons once did)

    We were thinking the column would be removed, possibly replaced with some other tracking mechanic. Open to suggestions here since we haven't discussed that part in depth yet. We're not sold on doing tokens contributed -> Influence because of the issue where switching or leaving your faction resets this number.

    quote:

    Anyways, removal of battle tokens is quite a shocker and kinda stomps on those veterans with large hordes of tokens that have been saving for faction domination's.

    The Tokens you have saved up would be converted into Credits, which would be a far more universal currency than before. Additionally, tokens you have already contributed to a Flag will help you out at the beginning of the new system. More details on this in the future.

    I would like to note that even though we're openly discussing some of the mechanics of this new system, they are subject to change before launch. Will try to do our best to keep you informed of such changes if they do happen.
