J6 -> Direct Mod Questions (9/5/2005 15:09:49)

Here are some ground rules: Only post once. Your reply will be edited with an answer, that way we know what answer goes to what question. If you aren't a mod, then don't answer. ArchKnights can answer, if they know.

Keep your questions art related, if it has to do with programs or general tips and tricks for freehand drawing. I will be answering most of the drawing hints and tips questions, so don't be shy to ask.

Please remember that the purpose of DMQ is not to address personal issues such as a thread being moved. Issues like that should be addressed through PM.

I will be answering in This Green

Katy Kat: I will reply with this color if I happen to have an answer to give. ^_^

spencetrix -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/5/2005 15:12:26)

You know, most DMQ's let the members help out on the answering aswell.
Since most of the questions are not hard.

Thats why there's the Q and A board for the gallery, so that forum users can answer those questions and help each other out. DMQ is for quick simple questions some people might have. because only mods can edit posts, its easier to keep it clean if mods answer DMQ questions.

What is the process that you go through for your creations? I have always enjoyed the AQ art style, and obviously you have a lot to do with it. What is the process that you go through? What are some tips for those of us that enjoy this art style, and would like to perfect it? What role do vectors play in this?

If I'm making a character, I always start out with the geometric skeleton (simple shapes and lines) to get the height, mass and movement of the character. after that i work on clothing, and usually keep facial features until last, because its one of the most important elements of a character. If im doing a background, i'll set up a perspective grid. (this is a series of lines which all lead to a single point, to give the effect of perspective) you can see these lines best in the background for the special mission to the knights quest. all the lines fade into a common point in the mountains. if i'd give any tips, it would be to observe everything. looking at something for inspiration doesnt make you a bad artist. nearly all great artists had a model which they based their things on. for me, i look at people a lot and notcie the angles at which they stand, to prevent doing the overdone "looking straight ahead" pose. for the whole AQ look, there's not much i can help you there with, because i myself base it on oishii's work. i look at a lot of her npc's and base my characters off of those to keep a nice fluid look in the game. if you'd like to try doing aq styled art, look at how the proportions work in the game, and how each character poses. they all have something different to them which make them special. and vectors play a very important role. vectors use mathematical calculations instead of pixels, so it save an immense amount of space by using them. for example, a good wallpaper is around 600-800 kb, but a good AQ background cant go over 20kb (30 kb if it has an NPC in it). so vectors are great for size.

Thanks, J.

Dark_Wurm -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/6/2005 18:08:25)

Where did you learn to get so good at art J? How did you start off? I ask this because I'm in a pickle at the moment...I try and try but I can't seem to get much better at making my art...can you give me some more tips? Remember you and Leth were the ones who started me off. :)
I'll appreciate any more tips you can give me and maybe some sites you used as you learned more?
Anyways thanks alot and i'll talk to you later,
Dark_Wurm

I didnt really learn it, i just picked up a pencil one day and started drawing. I can't tell you a site where i learnt things from, because i just dont use them, but my advice is to keep practicing. i know it sounds corny, but its the best advice i can give.

lil boi blue -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/6/2005 21:49:19)

if questions are answered and people dont change the title to "delete" may we simply say"is your question answered? if it is please edit your first post saying 'delete' to indicate to the mods your done with the thread and it has been answered" just in case they forget

quote:

When the question has been answered, delete the topic or change the title to "Delete" i will do a daily pass and delete and answered topics.

(i just dont wanna be mini-modding, though i dont want Q and A cluttered with posts)

One more thing, J, did the answer to the flash jumpingaround with gotoAndPlayframe whatever prove useful at all or no (just want to know if my text instructions are good at all so i know people can actually get what im trying to say)([sarcastic]and of course i know i dont annoy you with all my pm's, comments, and questions o post 24/7[/sarcastic]^_^)

You can just let the post die on its own, if they dont shange the title, then its best to just let the question get nudged off the first page and forever forgotten.
and yes, your flash info was useful, everything worked out great.

lil boi blue -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/10/2005 23:49:32)

recently in all sorts of threads and contests you have been saying you'll use them as a "reference" for something else,

is there some big mysterious thing that your working on in the "basement of your house(GoCA)" lol

everything i do is big and mysterious, so you'll have to wait to see what i'm planning

loser225 -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/11/2005 8:07:30)

Dark_Wurm -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/12/2005 4:22:15)

This may sound like a stupid question...but are you really left handed? I am :D

PS: What are you going to do about that guys stupid post a few back(#4)?...it's getting really annoying...

Please keep your questions art related

Sorry :( I can't contact you anywhere else really that's all.....

Dragoneill -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/12/2005 19:46:37)

I have a sig that is 50844 bytes, am i allowed to use it?

No. i know its on the line, but i'd like the 50k rule to be followed to the byte. if its only 844 bytes off, im sure you can crop it a pixel and there will be no visual difference.

Ultima Bahamut -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/17/2005 11:17:46)

I am starting to learn GFX ... so I was wondering what special requirements and stuff is needed to get a Creative title ? I heard I need a gallery and a certain amount of images being seen whetehr am i fit for the title . i just wanna be confirmed with the requirements. If it gets too difficult I'll just forget bout it.

You need to be good at what you do. the gallery isnt necessary, its just easier to see all of your work. you also have to have no warnings, and have good behavior in the rest of the forum

onizahkeado -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/18/2005 21:16:07)

thank you very much, im extremely grateful........... now i have just ONE MORE art related question... remember how a few posts back someone asks how to get creative and you say they have to have had good behavior and NO warnings ,............ i have a question........ DO I HAVE ANY WARNINGS AT ALL in the history of me being on these forums? T.T is really curious*

Nope

Dark_Wurm -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/19/2005 6:24:08)

Hello again J. I have a question about backgrounds. Can you give me some tips on making more exciting backgrounds? Lately I seen to be having that problem. I've gotten alot better but now my backgrounds are lacking. For the moment they are my prime problem. If you have time please give me some detailed tips - about shading, light, colours (they are pretty good at the moment), types of backgrounds (defiantly my main problem - lately i have been using pixel strech WAY too much), brushes and blending.

Any help thoroughly appreciated,
Dark_Wurm

Show me what you've done so far and ill try my best to give good advice based on that.

Alright would you like me to post it here or pm? (i'll post here for the time being)

5 latest (no particular order) - Not including Requests. (Notice ALL have pixel stretch) :(

[image]http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/Dark_Wurm/grafh.jpg[/image]

hmmm..well, i've always avoided that problem by always using an image as my background. even if it wasnt always obvious, after lots of editing and manipulation, you can make a photo of your grandmother look like a great action-packed background. but i'd ask the sig community for more help

Thats what I did when I first started. Head over to www.pixel2life.com dark_wurm. In there search area type in the type of BG you want i.e fire,space, ect. You should find some nice tuts. If you use PS I know there is a real nice fire BG tut that I have used in the past that looked nice. -Grafh

lil boi blue -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (9/20/2005 19:54:53)

what is the difference besides pinned and stickied threads (basically when the threads in the upper part of this board have pinned (yellow pin) vs the ones without the pins

ummm, i think there's no difference, the yellow pin means someone has posted within the last 24 hours

siris99 -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/1/2005 17:08:24)

Am I allowed to create a thread on here that outlines the specs of the different weapon types (I would define a hilt,tang. guard and such for a sword)?

Better explanation: I want to create a thread that goes over each peice of a weapon. I would outline the peice, and its importance. I would start with the different sword types and explain them. is this ok?

If you drew the weapon, it can go in the gallery, if not, and you;re just writing outlines about the AQ weapons, it might fit in legends of lore. But you'll have to speak to the head mod there

Nightbird435 -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/2/2005 15:54:02)

May I create a Gallery of my writing no it's not a story it's just different pieces of my writing.

Yup, writing is creative.

firmater -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/2/2005 16:18:24)

My Sigs [&o] They Need Work
Do You Know Any Good Tips/sites That can help me with GIMP?

Could You Rate Some Of My Sigs?(click sig)

I`ve never used GIMP, so I can`t help you with that, and to rate your sigs, i`m sure there are people in the sig sub-board who will help you out with that.

Mysizaar -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/3/2005 1:07:02)

J...i was just wondering what you liked about my art and why you gave me a Creative! title...

Also i was wondering if you draw stuff that goes in-game on paper first then scan it in and then re-draw it in flash or do you just draw it in flash from scratch?...

I liked that there were a few different styles and materials, but mostly a lot of pencil-based, which is always refreshing to see. What really caught my eye was the weapon redesigns, I thought that they were very well done.

As for my flash work, it depends. if its a character, i draw it on paper then send it to someone to have it inked (for time management reasons. I used to do my own, but its quicker to send them to someone while I color other things.) If its architechture, i usually sketch a small thumbnail, but draw it straight onto flash while looking at my sketch instead of scanning it.

Dark_Wurm -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/10/2005 1:10:49)

My Story: A few days ago my local area had a blackout and I decided to start to draw to spend the time.
Note: I haven't drawen for ages and I've never actually spent alot of time on a drawing.
So I started to draw....and after 30 mins to 1 hour the light popped on. I thought "Hmm....maybe I should go on the computer and do some photoshop" but I decided "What the heck! This is fun! May as well finish it". I continued to draw for another 30 mins or so and there a finished it...my little paper beholder! It couldn't really do any zappy things with it's eyes or anything like in those D&D games... and it was a pretty boring beholder...but still! I was proud because I drew it!

Well I haven't scanned it yet....but when I get some spare time - and I'm not contagious anymore (conjunctivitus) - I'll do it. Then...when I have the right program (I don't know what that is), I'll colour it :)

That brings me to my question :)
What program is the most effective when colouring a scanned drawing and is there anywhere which tells you specifically how to colour a drawing in it? (I'm guessing you use Flash MX?)

Thanks J,
~DW

there are two simple ways to do it. 1st) use photoshop, either on a new layer or with really dark lines. if you can get it right, it will look beautiful, but if you do a so-so job, it will be pixellated and unsuccessful. the 2nd way to do it is with flash, import an image, vectorise the image and then you'll be able to do a very precise colored image. i use flash because photoshop is just too big of a program to just color in something. but if you want nice gradients, go with photoshop.

Alright thanks alot J :)

bob210899 -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/12/2005 20:40:11)

how do i make a sprite page?

and how do i add a sprite sheet to my message or put up a link?

Ultima Bahamut -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/13/2005 22:16:48)

Its me J again !

Well you see , I don't really like the idea of 500 x 100 sigs . Its a really weird ratio . I'm not suggesting changing the rule , but I have lots of designs that has dimensions of 400 x 150 . Where do I post these . The height is just too short IMO . DO I post it in the Gallery of Creative Adventuers or Sig and Avatar makers assiocation ?

Unless J thinks other wise, Fourm Feedback might be a better idea. It has been already noted in the sig area. ~Grafh

Dark_Wurm -> RE: Direct Mod Questions (10/16/2005 7:42:00)

Can anyone make a new "Rate the Signature/Avatar/Title Above You" thread if need be?
Also, can you please give me some tips on my current sig?

Thanks J,
~DW

I got it. Was sleeping. But the new one is up now. ~Grafh
