with text, almost always use defaults, (texts that come with the program, which is what you used) and select the box that says Antialising in the tool options, otherwise it will come out pixelated. with that sig, I'd probably make the text a blue color, one thing you could do is make a layer under your colored text and type the same thing in black, then move that layer 1 pixel down and one pixel right, to get a sort of outlined look. You could also make the text blue and go to Layer> Transparency>Alpha to Selection, then go to Selection>Grow and use 1 pixel, then make a new layer under your text layer and fill it with black. there's also alot of other stuff that you can do to the text, like you can use the underscore (you know, this: ___) and drag it into your text to add a little style and check out this tut, great for text: http://www.gimptalk.com/topic.php?a=v&t=339&f=8 If you want new fonts, go here: www.dafont.com
