Houses burnt down to smoldering ashes. Townspeople losing their homes and loved ones in one man's fit of anger and madness. Fear struck them down, constricting any hope from their hearts. The mage rampaged across the village, one pair of the townsfolk decided to take a stand. Using any means necessary, a man and a woman, both members of the King's army, were ready to defend their home and their young daughter from this murderous mage. As he approached, the pair took their swords and stepped outside, ready to face him. "Hm? What's this? A couple of King's little worms think they can hurt me? ME? HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! *cackle crackle* I'LL BURN YOU DOWN TO YOUR BONES!" The mage charged at the pair. The man pushed the woman aside and yelled "TAKE ARIDANCE AWAY, FIONA! I'LL HOLD HIM LONG ENOUGH!" Reluctant, the woman ran to the house, understanding that they must put the safety of their daughter at first. As she ran upstairs to get her young child, she heard a devastating scream of pain. Knowing what had happened, she quickly took her daughter, ran downstairs and headed for the back door. As she got outside, the crazed man was already waiting. "What's the rush, pipsqueak? The party is just starting! HAAAAAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!" "I will not let your hurt my daughter! Step away!" "Or what? You're gonna try and plunge that sword in me? Be my guest! Do not be taken by surprise if you find that metal stick melting long before it reaches me though! HAHA!" As the mage shortened the distance between him and his victim, the woman attempted to flee back to the house and escape through the front. However, mere steps away from the door, the woman stopped dead on her tracks and turned around, just as a violent explosion consumed the house in its entirety, launching her and the child in air. Pieces of wood and stone shrapnel everywhere. The woman laid on the ground, having taken the brunt of the explosion to the back that resulted in fatal wounds and broken bones, including her right leg. Miraculously, the child was unharmed. He approached. "On today's menu; ONE CHARRED HUSBAND! HAHAHAHAHA!!! *cackle crackle*, the mage said, flinging the burned corpse of the woman's beloved next to her. "Well don't worry, I'll send you and that little brat straight after him! It'll be quick, but I can't guarantee it'll be painless! HAAAAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" As he formed a fireball on his fist, the woman was ready to accept her fate, pressing her young child against her body, hoping the flames wouldn't reach her. He threw the ball but suddenly, a barely visible, ball shaped shield with a faint color of orange formed around the woman and her child, deflecting the fireball. The mage was both astonished and angered. "What?! There is no way she could've deflected that ball without magic! Wait... It wasn't her... But that child..." Though they averted a sudden death, it wasn't strong enough to deflect all the damage, and the woman suffered a bad burn on her back. The mage came right next to the woman, grabbed the child and silently inspected her. Suprisingly, the girl was still asleep. "It must have somehow activated from her subconciousness..." "GIVE ME BACK MY DAUGHTER!!!!" The woman yelled in pain and agony. Sparing only a glance to her, the fire mage turned away and began to walk, taking the child with him. "STOOOOP!!!" The woman yelled. For her surprise, that's exactly what the mage did. "... This child now belongs to me. With you, her potential would dwindle and eventually fade. But with me... She will become something great... Hehehe..." With that said, the mage began to take his leave. However, the woman would not have it. With her last ounce of strength, she stood up. Even a broken leg would not stop a mother from taking her child back. The mage stopped once more. "Impressive. For a mere human. Takes extraordinary parents to have an extraordinary child, I suppose", the mage said with a belittling tone. "Seems to apply only to you, as your now-burning husband wasn't quite all that. HAHA!", the mage continued his sadistic banter. The woman picked up a broken sword and readied herself. She knew that with the burn on her back and a broken leg and sword, she'd stood no chance, and even without those her chances would not be any better. But for the sake of her child, she was ready to die. "Give me... back... my daughter", she uttered in pain. In the blink of an eye, the mage appeared right in front of the woman, and plunged his scorching hand through her chest. "Not. A. Chance", he said, with a malicious grin on his face. "A-A... Ari...d-dance", she gasped as her last words, as her eyes grew colorless. The flame of her life now extinguished, the woman fell. "Hmph. Humans. Beings of such fragility and weakness should just learn their places and stay in them." The mage began his journey towards his lair, with a burning village and countless dead in his wake, with only one young child as a survivor... ... ... ... The mage arrived at his lair. The heat inside could make dragons sweat, the heavy, thick layers of smoke would choke any living creature. Creatures of flames and darkness roamed the tunnels, all bowing to the mage out of fear and respect. Reaching his 'throne', he sat down and began inspecting the child on his lap, silently watching her. "This little runt... I can sense an unusually strong pyrokinetic power within her. Despite being a mere child, she possesses unimaginable potential. She will make a powerful tool for me to use against the Blue Mage, but it will take time to teach her the ways of pyromancy and how to fully control the flames. Yes, it will take time, but she will be my ultimate weapon! "HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" The man's lunatic laughter woke the baby up, and she glared at the him. Hardly any expression could be seen on his face, but his blackened skull, surrounded by intense flames, would make anyone mad with fear. Seemingly unafraid of him, she began to laugh as she thought the fiery skull was amusing. Confused by the child's first impression of him, his own impression of the child's true power had yet to reach its conclusion. "Now then, little ru- No... Aridance, right? That's right...", he lifted her up. "Xan is going to be your new daddy." END OF PROLOGUE CHAPTER
