Dialogue

*As you regain consciousness, the Beastmaster bounds back and forth.*

<Character>: Ow... My head...
Beastmaster: ...
Beastmaster: You... You should not be here.
<Character>: Ugh... And who are you supposed to be?
<Character>: Those chains... So The Rose is making you guard their secrets, is that it?

*The Beastmaster scrapes its hooked hand against the inside wall of the Ivory Tower's basement.*

Beastmaster: I do as I want.
<Character>: ...Seems to me like you want a fight.
Beastmaster: You drew your weapon first.

  • Battle! - begins battle with Beastmaster (1).
  • Heal - fully replenishes HP, MP, and potions.
  • Run Away! - returns to Swordhaven (Book 3).

*After the battle, a sap-like substance drips from a wound on the Beastmaster's shoulder; it falls to the floor, and a sprout appears where it landed.*

Beastmaster: You have power, human. Why waste it here?
<Character>: The Rose is doing awful things! Look at you. You're chained up in a basement!
Beastmaster: I am here of my own will.

*You pause to contemplate the Beastmaster's illusion of choice.*

<Character>: And all the other creatures chained up here? What about them?

*The Beastmaster throws a barrel at you; you successfully avoid the attack.*

Beastmaster: You broke into my lair. You hurt those I care for. Not The Rose.
<Character>: I need to speak to Jaania! I'm going to stop the ones who captured you! You'll be free!
    Beastmaster: You assume too much.

  • Battle! - begins battle with Beastmaster (2).
  • Heal - fully replenishes HP, MP, and potions.
  • Run Away! - returns to Swordhaven (Book 3).

*After the second battle, the Beastmaster beats its chest, while you drink a potion.*

    Beastmaster: You.

Beastmaster: Your words and your convictions are misguided.

*The Beastmaster spits on the floor; mint-colored mushrooms sprout from where it landed.*

Beastmaster: The Rose saved me from servitude.
Beastmaster: These chains are for the protection of myself and others.
Beastmaster: All those I care for, I treat with the utmost respect and dignity. Yet you would say otherwise.
<Character>: Outside the tower... in the swamps and forests and mountains and beyond. General Akanthus is using similar chains to enslave and control.

*The Beastmaster pauses, unaware of this truth.*

    Beastmaster: ...Enslave...?
<Character>: They're burning villages, capturing people, and worse! Lady Jaania needs to know!

*The Beastmaster hangs its head and mournfully groans.*

Beastmaster: The Rose saved me. Saved me and my charges. Why would they do such terrible things?
<Character>: I... I don't know. I'm hoping Jaania can help me find out.

*Overcome with grief, the Beastmaster falls to the ground.*

    Beastmaster: ...
Beastmaster: An elf... he took my fist.

Beastmaster: A human... drew her blade across my flesh.
Beastmaster: When the elf Yalla arose, the elves "tamed" the lands. Took me and my kin as beasts of burden and war.
Beastmaster: The forest... the elementals... everything cried out in pain and I could not heal it.
<Character>: And now you're trapped inside a tower, shackled and away from the nature you love so much.

*Regaining its rage as you challenge its worldview, the Beastmaster twitches and groans with anger.*

Beastmaster: Your words bite at my soul. Let's see if your blades and magic do the same.

  • Battle! - begins battle with Beastmaster (3).
  • Heal - fully replenishes HP, MP, and potions.
  • Run Away! - returns to Swordhaven (Book 3).

*After the third battle, the Beastmaster appears closer to considering your worldview.*

Beastmaster: These exchanges have been a rare pleasure, human. You have given me many wounds to heal, and thoughts to ruminate on. However...

*All of a sudden, the air in the Ivory Tower's basement turns cold, and the sprout and mushrooms shrivel and die; an icy barrier appears between you and the Beastmaster as Jaania appears in the basement's doorway.*

Jaania: Hello again, <Character>. It has been a while, hasn't it?
Jaania: Come along. Join me in my study.
Jaania: I have much to share.

    *Scene fades to black.*

    Dialogue

*As you regain consciousness, the Beastmaster bounds back and forth.*

    <Character>: Hnngh...
    Beastmaster: ........
Beastmaster: You... you should not be here.
    <Character>: Ugh...
<Character>: ...pretty sure you don't belong locked in a basement either, buddy.

*The Beastmaster scrapes its hooked hand against the inside wall of the Ivory Tower's basement.*

    Beastmaster: Outside is not safe.
<Character>: Inside doesn't seem particularly safe either...
    Beastmaster: You struck first.

  • Battle! - begins battle with The BeastMaster (1).

Beastmaster: There is strength in you... and conflict.
<Character>: Really? The giant forest creature that lives in the basement of a stone tower in the middle of a city is telling me I'm conflicted.
Beastmaster: There's more to a pond than the surface.

*You pause to contemplate the Beastmaster's words of wisdom.*

    <Character>: I know a guy on Sho'Nuff that you'd get along with.

*The Beastmaster throws a barrel at you; you successfully avoid the attack.*

Beastmaster: You invaded. You hurt those I care for.
<Character>: I'm trying to stop the one who captured you and rescue you too.
    Beastmaster: Your methods require improvement.

  • Battle! - begins battle with The BeastMaster (2).
  • Heal - fully replenishes HP, MP, and potions.

*After the second battle, the Beastmaster beats its chest, while you drink a potion.*

    Beastmaster: Humans.

    Beastmaster: You're a confusing race.

*The Beastmaster spits on the floor; mint-colored mushrooms sprout from where it landed.*

Beastmaster: Long ago... I taught one of you the ways of the Beastmaster.
    Beastmaster: How to tame.

    Beastmaster: How to care.
Beastmaster: I still dream of the tiny town on the Bay... of the tiny human who would pet a Grinder fearlessly.

Beastmaster: She... she was my friend.
    <Character>: Wait... Grams?

*The Beastmaster pauses, believing you share a mutual friend.*

    Beastmaster: Gramercy lives?
    <Character>: I... I'm sorry... but I think she's gone.

*The Beastmaster hangs its head and mournfully groans.*

    Beastmaster: Was it you?
    <Character>: No.

*Overcome with grief, the Beastmaster falls to the ground.*

    Beastmaster: .......
Beastmaster: Another human... he took my fist.

Beastmaster: Another... drew her blade across my flesh.
Beastmaster: I was lost. The forest... the elementals... everything cried out in pain and I could not heal it.
Beastmaster: Then, the frozen one came... and gave me purpose again.
<Character>: With shackles? By trapping you inside stone walls?

*Regaining its rage as you challenge its purpose, the Beastmaster twitches and groans with anger.*

    Beastmaster: .....
Beastmaster: I wonder what kind of human you are... I can see darkness and light but I fear your head is made of stone.

  • Battle! - begins battle with The BeastMaster (3).
  • Heal - fully replenishes HP, MP, and potions.

*After the third battle, the Beastmaster doesn't appear any closer to considering your worldview.*

Beastmaster: Even with a head of stone you have a heart of fire. I will mourn you after snuffing it out.

*All of a sudden, the air in the Ivory Tower's basement turns cold, and the sprout and mushrooms shrivel and die; an icy barrier appears between you and the Beastmaster as Jaania appears in the basement's doorway.*

Jaania: The front door was available, <Character>. Antagonizing my Beastmaster and his charges... was unnecessary.

    *Scene fades to black.*
