NagisaXIkari -> (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (12/2/2018 8:07:01)

Master thread for not only Ocean of Hopelessness: Redux, but other works set within the same continuity for the sake of organization.

“If I am mad, it is mercy! May the gods pity the man who in his callousness can remain sane to the hideous end!” ~H.P. Lovecraft "The Temple"

The Wilting Rose

With Espina Rosa's fall, a location for a new prison is sought out. Under the command of Captain Roland, his squad of what could best be described as misfits set out through Doomwood to uncover such a location with little information to go on besides some rumours.

Chronologically the first story in the series delving into the history and nature of Arkham Asylum.

Credit to Dwelling Dragonlord for the title.

A New Home.
A New Home Discussion

A young man from Amityvale learns a grandfather he doesn't recall meeting left him a house in the obscure town of Dunwich. What was supposed to be a journey into adulthood becomes a terrifying struggle to maintain his sanity.

Prequel to Ocean of Hopelessness: Redux introducing locations and at least a prominent character in the main work.

Ocean of Hopelessness: Redux.

A young Ascendant experiences a vision involving the stars above accompanied by a mysterious voice. Traveling through Doomwood, she meets a Soulweaver in the strange town of Innsmouth and the two share horrifying experiences in forgotten parts of the region. Elsewhere, Baron Jaysun Valtrith prepares to challenge Kathool.

The rewrite. Prelude and first two chapters remain similar to the original while the third chapter and beyond is where the differences begin to show.

The Long Dark.
The Long Dark Discussion

A Paladin wanders the halls of Arkham Asylum, slaying the undead that haunts its halls, but the deeper they venture into the asylum, it becomes apparent things are not as they seem.

Set some time after Ocean of Hopelessness: Redux building on a prominent location and offering some background on a minor character.

The Hunter

Set some time in Lore's future, The Hunter follows the travels of a Shadow Hunter who puts more emphasis on the Hunter aspect of their job as they track and slay monsters that the world's great heroes have not slain themselves. But it's not just the prey that attempt to track the hunter, but memories of a past life and how those events shaped them continue to not only haunt, but hunt The Hunter even in their dreams when transported to a strange world unlike their own.

Ocean of Hopelessness.
Ocean of Hopelessness Discussion

The original work left unfinished due to too many inconsistencies with DragonFable that'd take far too much effort to go back and correct and I think writing it off an AU fic is kind of a cop out. Serves as the foundation of the rewrite.

Potential Future Stories

Ideas for stories I may write in the future that I mentioned in other discussion threads. How they'll fit chronologically is up in the air, this is really just so I don't forget and if anyone is actually following this, maybe they might like this.

Story set in the Sandsea as for when, who knows. Maybe I'll try to keep it ambiguous, but any references to in-game events would give it away. Expect madness in the desert.

Story reminiscent of Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of the Madness," set somewhere probably made-up in Dragesvard.

Something set in the jungles of Sho'nuff Island involving what the locals refer to as The Skintaker.

"If Only I Had A Heart" - Originally planned to be a spin-off story from the original "Ocean of Hopelessness," but with the rewrite and given how it initially came out of nowhere, I scrapped that aspect of the idea, but am still fond of the idea. Starring a spectre or something, I'm not actually sure what it was beyond being something with red eyes and a penchant for devouring living things to sustain itself and discovering new emotions while huntings its prey.

"The Darkness Is My Lantern" - A Paladin slays the undead and forces of darkness without a second thought, but how many wonder what the ghosts, zombies, and skeletons were like during their life?

"On This Day" - Short story from the point of view of Iustitia reminiscing about their life and the events of "Ocean of Hopelessness: Redux"

Fourth chapter up. Here I demonstrate I don't know how Ascendant works, but I at least try as well as show action scenes aren't my forte.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (12/10/2018 8:05:04)

Chapters five and six up. For chapter six, I took cues from chapter six and seven of the original work and essentially combined the two as why bother having the first meeting of the main duo spread out over two chapters.

Already I'm preferring this version over the original just through better decisions on characterization.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (12/16/2018 7:34:35)

Chapter seven up. Would've been earlier, but I started nodding off when writing then got sidetracked on other days.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (12/29/2018 9:10:17)

Eighth chapter up. Ninth should be up by tomorrow if all goes well.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (12/31/2018 7:45:42)

Ninth chapter up before the new year at least.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (1/3/2019 8:08:20)

Tenth chapter and first chapter of the new year up.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (1/8/2019 4:30:52)

First interlude and chapter eleven up.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (3/11/2019 15:09:16)

New chapter up after too long without. Short to the point I shouldn't even call it a chapter and demonstrates I'm still bad at action scenes no matter how brief.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (3/29/2019 9:09:55)

Another short chapter up and still bad at action scenes. Maybe even getting worse at them.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/1/2019 10:17:35)

A longer chapter up and boy did I notice I have skewed the order of events from the original work, but whatever. Continuing the trend of bad action scenes which will continue into the next chapter which will conclude the Miskatonic arc and then onto Arkham which was certainly my favourite one to write in the original.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/2/2019 6:41:21)

Another short chapter that is honestly an anticlimactic ending to the Miskatonic arc because and I can't stress it enough, am bad at action scenes.

Next up will be leading into Arkham and all the introspection and dialogue that comes with it.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/4/2019 10:55:30)

One new chapter basically combining Chapter XIV and Interlude II from the original and a second chapter which I had to login to DF for the first time in ages and go through the Maleurous storyline to write which didn't actually yield a whole lot.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/5/2019 4:54:55)

Another chapter. That's tree in two days and four in the same week.

Also reread A New Home and fixed a couple spelling errors and fixed a contradiction

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/6/2019 8:52:17)

New chapter up, holy cats am I on a roll. Some slight edits made to the previous chapter and with the next chapter, we'll be halfway to where the original "Ocean of Hopelessness" was canned.

Next chapter is going to be a difficult one as in the original it was when Samael was introduced, but can't do that here due to the events and existence of "A New Home," and the other thing I had in mind was nope because of chapter seventeen now up to nineteen.

Action scenes aren't all I'm bad at, but foresight as well.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/7/2019 8:19:09)

Chapter twenty up, solving the dilemma I had previously, in theory. Second interlude also up marking the beginning of the asylum arc. Actually excited for this as it was my favourite part of the Arkham arc from the original work.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/8/2019 8:28:05)

Chapter twenty-one up. Was nodding off near the end, so might need to make some edits.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/11/2019 12:00:33)

Slight changes to the previous chapter which I had titled as chapter twenty-six. Otherwise three new chapters up since one is fairly short, but also basically a word for word copypaste from the original work not that the following chapter was any different.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/12/2019 6:43:36)

Slight edit to the previous chapter, nothing major just another line to some dialogue. And the twenty-fifth chapter added.

It occured me that Dragonfable and perhaps other AE games, but mostly Dragonfable as it has been many years since I played AQ and I didn't play a lot of AQW or BattleOn 3D or whatever it was called has influenced my writing mostly in the sense of peppering my works with many pop culture references, but Stephen King one of my all time favourite writers did the same, but not to the same extent.

I don't expect anyone to find them all let alone look. I'm confident no one is actually reading this with "The Long Dark" (the title of which does come from a totally unrelated work) being the last story someone other than myself has read.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/14/2019 9:00:34)

Edited the OP of this thread to include same notes of what is potentially to come in the future of this series. Also four new chapters added with the Arkham arc nearing its conclusion. Next up will be the Dunwich arc leading to the convergence of the storylines of Xalia and the Soulweaver with the Valtrith storyline.

The original "Ocean of Hopeless" featured a sidestory beginning with the end of the Arkham arc involving, I can't recall a spectre of sorts or something. That story was initially going to lead into its own story, but eh. Looking back, it really just came out of nowhere.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/17/2019 12:42:26)

Chapter thirty up and we are now ten chapters and an interlude away from where the original "Ocean of Hopelessness" was dropped. Having only my own views to go on, I can at least say I think this version is the better one.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/18/2019 7:56:10)

Third interlude and chapter thirty-one up. Dunwich arc is set to be different than in the original work due to the events of "A New Home."

Think this will be the last of this type of story I write in the sense of multiple groups in a semi-intertwined conflict and just the nature of the conflict as its antithetical to the tone of the story. Also because I'm bad at action scenes.

Also going through the original "Ocean of Hopelessness," the sidestory of the spectre or whatever was going on after Arkham is something that I think I'll do as its own solo story as intended, just a more standalone story minus any nods to existing stories rather than beginning in another story.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/20/2019 9:06:46)

Thirty-second chapter up. To think part of why I began writing the original version of this story was to sort of try to rehabilitate the image of Valtrith because his aesthetic is on point and has plenty of potential, but that potential wasn't realized until the Gathering Shadows storyline and even then it still fizzled out.

And then there's my portrayal of him and it's like I am going in the opposite direction, but I suppose before you can rebuild something, you gotta tear down the original first. Except for the part where the previous story ends with his resurrection. I swear I have a plan.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/23/2019 8:54:23)

Two more chapters up. Either it's because I don't sleep and my own poor vision or everything is italicized and I don't know why.

NagisaXIkari -> RE: (DF) The Madness Chronicles Discussion (4/24/2019 11:47:38)

Thirty-fifth chapter up. Also italicized for reasons I cannot fathom.

And would you believe it, non-existent readers? I am bad at action scenes.

EDIT: April 25th update. Not a new chapter as I'd just make a new post for that, but solved my italics problem. Had the wrong tag halfway through chapter thirty-two which bunked up everything. I am not a smart person.
