Only two weeks remaining until the end of donation contest!

PD -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/17/2023 22:24:48)

While we're tracking the contest, a fun fact: The top 20% of active days (13/64) in 2022 accounted for ~74% of the donations. Not quite Pareto but still very close. Other years (2018, 2020, 2021) also followed a very similar power law.

I wonder though how much the changed contest structure will affect the going trend. Historically speaking 50% of the donations don't even come until the last 3 days and we're not at that point yet. Which is crazy to think about when you realize we're already doubling up past years' performances. If the trend is similar to years' past I think there's a pretty good chance we'll hit that 30m stretch mark. I'm pretty curious about what that those bonus prizes will be.

Also hoping that we'll have a similar structure for the upcoming Winter contests. I think it's already been shown just how much more activity there is out there.

PS: Please look at fixing the Winter Gold contest ahead of time.

Small note: Updated my Token Tracker to use a custom tooltip and legend. With the custom legend you can now interact with each of the series to show/hide the season. I also added a better tooltip to compress the data and format it neater. Go ahead and check them out!

One week remaining until the end of donation contest!

PD -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/26/2023 12:00:21)

We just passed last year's total prize pool, nice going guys!

Also a crazy idea I had: What if going forward the top 5 winners of Summer/Winter Z-token contest were eligible to pick any past contest set/z-package? I'd imagine there's some demand out there for those who missed out on previous contests but would like to be able to obtain them somehow. I think for example, if one could obtain Veywild or Thunderbird by placing in the top 5 of a Summer/Winter contest that would drive up activity quite a bit for the top end of donators. Maybe some people might also want to pick up a rotational/unobtainable z-package that they also missed out on. For example if I wanted Ruby Rose I could get it by placing in the top 5 of the contest.

Kamui -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/28/2023 1:44:50)

Heya, everyone! You all passed the 20 MILLION tokens donated mark, nice going! Colour Custom has now been enabled for the Mermazon armour!

PD -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/30/2023 2:10:23)

When this contest is over, I want to as a weekend project create a timelapse video to show the progression/growth of the ranks in the contest. I think it'll be something that interests everyone from players to the staff. While we only just a week ago started tracking the real numbers of ranks I think even the approximations would be useful visualizations as at least in the lower amounts they' were more precise than afterwards.

Not sure if the reasoning is connected, but at least from a quick observation after the last set of changes were announced (real time updates and real ranking numbers), we started a massive surge from 14.5m to (as of this post) ~20.9m, a nearly 50% increase in the total prize pool. Today was slower than the last couple days in terms of pool activity but overall it seems to have had a positive effect on the prize pool.

I'll definitely be on the lookout to see how these last 48 hours will look out to be: If the 3rd phase surge was front-loaded this time around or if there's still going to still be a secondary surge within the current 3rd phase surge. Hopefully we'll hit that 30m mark and also get some interesting data points.

Also I just want to say to the staff thanks for making all the changes that you have. I believe many of the changes have made positive and significant contributions to activity and enthusiasm and hope that in the future we'll see more positive changes implemented.

EDIT: We passed 2020's total of 21.185m overnight (currently 21.851m as of this post), strong stuff guys!

dizzle -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/30/2023 19:40:36)

I also want to give my thanks to the devs for listening to players feedback, and trying something new with this contest. Seems like it’s a win win for all of us! It’s changes like this that keep it interesting at least for me and I hope we can continue trying new things and continue to evolve as both a player base and a dev team to keep this game rolling into its 30’s!

Grace Xisthrith -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/30/2023 20:01:38)

I'm also grateful to the staff, this has been a fun contest.

PD, I'm really interested to see how the last day turns out as well, I really like your resource to look at the trends and compare the years, it's very interesting to me. Thanks for putting in the time to make it :)

Korriban Gaming -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/30/2023 21:10:07)

Alot of good changes were made for this contest and I like them. I hope we get to do more different item categories for top 5 in the future!

decimallow -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/30/2023 23:12:53)

I would also like to thank the staff members for going above and beyond this year for the donation contest and also for looking into player feedback regularly. I will also say that this year's donation contest is the best one so far. Really looking forward to the Winter donation contest this year if a similar pattern is followed.

If I maybe humble enough to make a suggestion: The Summer donation Contest 2020 for the Veywild Set had a Spell: Veywild Crash awarded to top 100. For this year's contest, I would like to suggest some names for the spell if the staff is interested: Wingweaver's Flight/Wingweaver's Ascent/Wingweaver's Retribution.

In future donations, it would be nice if the weapons can be extended to the top 250, Spell can be awarded to top 150, Pet to top 100, armor to top 50 and rest can follow this year's contest. This would increase the incentives and encourage more people to donate.

Also, sorry for the long message, the 30 million z-token rewards for the community drive looks really beautiful. It would be nice if the staff can show some leeway if we make it closely. A 25 million z-token target would be nice.

PD -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/31/2023 0:00:03)

@Grace Xisthrith: Thank you for the kind feedback! Glad that some people were able to make use out of it. I will also plan to make the same improvements for the upcoming winter gold/token contest so you can also look forward to that when the time comes.

@decimallow: I think at this rate there's going to be a very strong chance that we'll hit the 30m stretch mark (we are at 23m as of this post right now). Traditionally the last day usually contributes anywhere from 25-33% of the total prize pool so if history holds we should be well on track to achieving the last stretch goal.

24 HOURS TO GO, we're in the home stretch now!

I really hope we get a 500M button for Gold donations during Winter contests, its very tedious donating only 100M at a time with a 30? seconds cooldown between them.

Sapphire -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (8/31/2023 8:53:28)

The big variable this year, though, is two factors. With the refesh rate now at
2 minutes for the list and the exact amounts being shown, players will know exactly how many tokens they need to donate to snipe. So the cat and mouse game will be massive. Will this facilitate more donation or less? There are those who took advantage of the large refresh time in the past, to snipe. The big obstacle now is will you have enough time to win a battle on your chars? Those who don't rely on donated tokens are at and advantage.

But before we we had the 50k+, 75k+, 100k+, 200K+, etc benchmarks there'd be no telling where people were. Did it make players go all in to surpass someone? Did it make them hesitant?

It will be interesting to see how today plays out. We are now at 24.1 million donated total. Will we see 5.9mil+ in the next approx 15 hours?

PD -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (9/1/2023 0:00:04)

And the contest is over, and we smashed the 30 million stretch goal!!!

I will write a small celebratory retrospective later but for now, what an effort and finish by the community!

Rastaban -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (9/1/2023 6:04:02)

Congratulations!

Sapphire -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (9/1/2023 7:27:54)

Never before have I ever felt satisfied, relieved, and yet, disheartened and in disbelief all at the same time. Spent WAY more than I wanted. Had to.

But I am very excited for the set, especially if the one a lot of us that spent the past week helping collab is chosen. And the 30 mil stretch goal items, hopefully those turn out great.

Maybe the pet will be the panic eater that Fae's "lost" out on damage with a +50% or 100% for damage for HP cost (or some other cost) all rolled into one. That'd be your offensive pet for sure.

Great job everyone!

Strange Doctor -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (9/1/2023 8:15:35)

I wonder what happened to that Smaite Omega char. He was on the third place but couldn't find him on the entire list anymore.

kreem -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (9/1/2023 8:26:30)

Smaite Omega and Chaotic aren't his normal usernames. A few leaderboard characters used joke or copycat names even at the end including him.

PD -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (9/1/2023 9:21:16)

Now for the retrospective...

First of all: The Token Tracker has been updated with the numbers from the last day. I apologize for the delay but there was an unprecedented amount of activity preventing Wayback from indexing the data in a timely fashion.

Second of all another round of thanks to the entire community for an unprecedented performance! It'll be really hard to top this year but who knows, maybe we have it in us to do it again!

Now for some fun facts:

  • The previous record for donations was 21,185,000 tokens from 2020 [Veywild]. We completely obliterated this record!
  • The last day performance this year was the best single-day performance ever, going from 23 million to 36 million, contributing to 36% of the overall pool.
  • The top 5 donators contributed to ~37.8% of the overall pool.
  • Assuming that people bought packages from the most efficient tier ($250 for 200k tokens), this contest donated ~$45,035.4375 worth of tokens (total pool / 200,000 * 250).

    And now for some commentary:

    The cutoffs: While the cutoffs this year were higher than they were last year while having double the winners for the top cut, I think it's fair to say that the true "buy in" was much lower than in previous years due to the sheer velocity of token distributions. I didn't personally keep track of how many tokens I farmed and received over the course of the contest but I personally started out the contest with ~216k tokens in my vault and ended with ~180k. Since I donated 251k my guestimate is that I'd received and farmed ~215k tokens. Thus I myself only really "spent" 38k tokens for the top cut. Others were likely in the same situation of being heavily subsidized in their quest to be at the top. For those who spent nearly a same amount and did not win a top prize, this might be a little more heartening to hear. For those who did not go all in or even try at all, you're likely sitting on a mountain of freely-gifted Z-tokens and probably won't need to buy any more for a very long time if ever.

    I think given the levels of enthusiasm that community showed it was capable of, another conversation could be had around adding yet more top cut slots. Perhaps we could expand it from 50 -> 60/75 for the upcoming Winter Contests or next years' Summer Contest. Despite our record performance, I don't think we've hit our optimal balance between the demand for winning an item vs the supply of winners to be awarded. Doubling the number of winners this year not only did not decrease the cutoffs significantly (purportedly last year's T25 cutoff was 280k vs this year's 285k) but one could even make the argument that the expansion actually made the contest much more competitive. When you increase the number of winners, more people will come in when they were previously discouraged from doing so.

    The prize structure: I think it's fair to say that most people have come away with this contest very satisfied. While we likely haven't achieved the happy balance like the above point yet, I'm hoping that we'll continue to do it this way around going forward and also for the Winter Contests. Perhaps the upcoming Gold Contests could also have a similar structure of prizes.

    Community suggestions: My big question around this point is what direction the staff will go. I think one of the reasons that the contests post-2019 have been as active as they are is because of the community's ability to input suggestions. After all, people want items that fit to their needs/wants. Yet my concerns around this are several in that this inevitably causes discussions about who's suggestion to pick and for what reason. Several people approached me asking me to support various suggestions (to which I wanted no part of) and I only ever put suggestions out there to have other people bounce ideas off of or get inspired by, never intending them to be taken seriously or even demand them to be implemented. Given that contests now occupy 4/12 months (plus 2 weeks to implement the contest prizes) of the year contests are becoming an ever more normalized part of the game.

    There are valid discussions about why someone's idea should be taken over another but I am increasingly concerned about the state of the game where it is being increasingly premium-driven and the ability of the staff to execute on a desired technical-creative direction. With an increasing part of the game becoming premium/rotational we are going in a much more fraught direction. While it hasn't completely boiled over yet there have already been a few bad episodes of this dynamic. Of course this is the result of the game's state of affairs and this is one of the few paths that it can take to be a sustainable product given the dynamics of it all. My only hope here is that the increasingly stakeholder-dependent nature of product development doesn't become primary over fixing the technical-logistical issues that the game has.

    A subpoint, but one way to reduce said stakeholder dependency issue is to think about advertisers. A long time ago Ballywho used to play 3rd party ads but not anymore. I'm not sure why this isn't the case anymore but perhaps it might be a good time to start thinking about bringing in advertisers and think about reducing the need for certain keep-the-lights-on releases like golden giftboxes and contests.

    Being proactive about the Winter Contest: Now I've already said this as have others, but with the end of the Summer Contest comes the Winter Contest in a few months and we are demanding that the Gold contest's donation timer be fixed or removed. Or give us better donating options (1b or 500m options). I'm not really looking forward to the Gold Contest given the previous years' experiences. Hopefully since we've said it enough times now the staff will be more proactive about it.

    Off dropped from like 70s and ended up at 98th lol. It's amazing how rapidly the chart shifts in the last 24 hours!

    Weeum -> RE: =AQ= 2023 Summer Season of Giving (9/3/2023 16:37:28)

    This is a sidebar question not directly relevant to the contest (I was directed here for the question), has there been any internal discussion as to what is possible for a hypothetical golden dev armor ticket with regards to subraces that have a transformation? IE if you selected to reskin vampire could you do both the base form and the transformed form with one ticket?

    @PD, thank you for the excellent work in compiling the data. I know it is very late, but I want to help contribute to your fun fact with one essential detail. The screenshot from WayBackMachine above was taken ten minutes before midnight. Here is a screenshot taken extremely close to midnight for a more precise token amount. See the description of the screenshot for more details.
