Going off of the "greater cousin that spits poison and kills" clue: Bifid cipher, which is related to a Trifid cipher, and "Trifid" looks an awful lot like Triffid, a fictional plant that can spit a stinger coated with a fatal poison. EDIT: Going futher, the Bifid cipher also fits with the "even square" bit: it uses a 5x5 grid, which requires the removal of one letter to remain a square. If J is the letter in question and the alphabet is, as speculated above, backwards, that gives us the grid __1 2 3 4 5 1 Z Y X W V 2 U T S R P 3 P O N M L 4 K I H G F 5 E D C B A Further edit: The Wikipedia article claims that longer messages, which this one would certainly qualify as, are split into equal groups called periods that are encrypted seperately. The problem here is that the letter count comes to 661, a prime number. However, using this handy prime factor generator and some multiplication I was able to determine that 660 has the following factors: 1 660 2 330 3 220 4 165 5 132 6 110 10 66 11 60 12 55 15 44 20 33 22 30 The simplest solution would be to make periods of one of the lengths above and add the extra character to one, however finding the period length and the appropriate section for the spare could take a while.
