Rebalancing the Equation
Hi there EpicDuelists! It’s that time of the week again, time to let you know what’s on our agendas for this week!

Balance Changes

Last week I promised that we’d implement some balance changes soon, and we’re finally ready to release the planned balance changes!

Here’s what we’ve confirmed:
• Static Charge gets a buff, no longer being reduced by the enemy’s defenses when calculating the energy gain (similar to Atom Smasher)
• Slight nerf to robots, now using either the robot’s attack or its special ability will send both options into cooldown
• Buff to Plasma Rain, and Multi-Shot as they will now improve with each 4 points invested in Technology or Dexterity (to match Artillery Strike)
• Fixed Damage skills will now improve with your character’s level
• Percentage based skills (Berzerker, Bludgeon, Double Strike, Massacre) will now work like Deadly Aim, applying to the relevant equipped item instead of the entire attack amount

This is not meant to be the “be-all, end-all” Ultimate Solution to Balance, but as I’ve said before, we’d rather go in with a scalpel than a sledgehammer. The improved scaling with cast spells required Titan to program a new scaling system, which is a big reason for the delay. This list is subject to last minute changes as testing progresses!

Code Improvements

We’ve managed to fix a few bugs, including one where removing a buddy does not unlink you as allies, one of the sources of lag (hung battles), and a few bugs on our moderator tools.

I’ve also been getting a lot of questions as to why we haven’t implemented more bots into the game, or added more dynamic options (such as battle pets) to the game. The system that bots currently use needed fixing, and Titan is currently building a better system for robots, as well as several other new useful features. We like building new features, and it’s really fulfilling to be able to set the ground work.

New Banners!

Charfade’s back from her holiday, and she’s been working on giving the webpage a facelift. I’m not sure when this’ll go up, so I don’t know it has gone up or not when you’re reading this. If it has, good job Charfade! If it hasn’t, also good job, but not as enthusiastically.

LQS Restock

As stated in last week's DNs, we plan on restocking the Telsa and Lady Tesla Armors once again with the new release on Friday. This restock will be small, but we'll try to give everyone who missed out on it last week a chance to grab it! This is the last guaranteed restock. After this weekend, restocks, if they happen, will be very small and entirely random. We want to provide a fair chance to as many players as possible to grab the LQS items, but we also want to retain rarity and value of the item for those who were lucky enough to grab it immediately.

More?

We'll see what we can squeeze in before the end of the week! Could be anything!

Now we’re E/I!

Not really, but when I asked on Twitter how the players would respond if I started putting an “Insect Fact of the Week” on the Design Notes, the response was overwhelmingly positive. So, this feature will be a regular occurrence!

Here are a couple facts about insect maturity!

When insects mature, they molt- that is, shed their exoskeletons- until they are mature. The developmental stage between each molt is called an “instar”. Since insects do not molt after reaching maturity, the term “instar” only refers to larval or nymphal forms of the insect.

The process of maturing in insects is called “metamorphosis”. Homometabolous insects undergo complete metamorphosis, where the larva forms a pupa, and undergoes a dramatic change. You know about this if you’ve ever seen a caterpillar turn into a butterfly. Hemimetabolous insects go from a nymph to an adult through gradual changes, and the nymph often resembles the adult. An example of this kind of insect would be a dragonfly.

Gamma bots are weeping.

DeathSpawn -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:38:11)

Very much looking forward to this update.

Lets see how it works :)

Also will the restock time be announced? Says Friday....lets hope we get a time for the LQ armor...

Also keep things on topic? If someone wants to know about insects just use google...

Calogero -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:38:38)

I don't get it... really I don't...

I am happy for Plasma Rain and Robot but...
When You Say ' Caster Revamp ' That's more than just Plasma Rain.

Digital X -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:38:59)

Hmm, given that bot information, i might change builds. Or go back to CH.

Decisions, decisions..

But on the other hand, changing class because of one balance adjustment, would be silly i think. Right?

Sipping Cider -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:40:48)

Interesting, i thought metomorphosis was only with butterflies.

Anyways, I can not wait to see exactly how the level of your character effects fixed damage skills.

elm street -> RE: =ED= Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:46:02)

wait are u serious? even if i dont hit physical robot damage it will still go into a FOUR turn cooldown? ok no thats too much.... it was two of the 3 weapons i used in my tank build. guess im moving to str over this.. the rest of the update i like, but that makes no sense... that completely cripples the whole point of the gama bot

Ashari -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:46:14)

andy123, this part is the caster revamp Cindy was talking about: "Fixed Damage skills will now improve with your character’s level"

Abilities like Plasma Bolt, or Overload that have a fixed base damage will now have that damage scale to your level. At level 33 they will do more damage than at level 1 so they'll remain useful at every level.

aqwshadowking14 -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:46:35)

This seems pretty cool but when is the LQS restock.

Calogero -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:48:56)

It's not those skills that I am woried about, it's Super Charge...

this is the skill that pretty much no experienced BM/TM uses
due to it being UP'd.

With 63 + 63 + 50 Dex and a lvl 8 Supercharge I hit a 40 while a lvl 1 SS can do about the same damage

goldslayer1 -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:50:03)

hmm
so again its back to weapon damage.
33 X .7 = 23.1 damage over the strike.
hmmmm

Dendavex -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:50:57)

This DN killed me.

MrBones -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:51:43)

/DBag picks up the remains of his GammaBot....

Sniff.... well we had some good times little bot..

Now I am off to a strenght built, like 95% of the other players.

Ranloth -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:52:16)

LQS restock is on Friday.
Anyway I love the balance - even thought it won't affect me so much I still love it! People will moan about Bots but now actually Assault has more of a tactical use (debuff and gotta wait then) and Gamma is for sheer damage but Focus 5 was getting too strong so this is for everyone, they won't be that strong anymore.
Base skill improvents affect all my chars so love it too! ;D And do we get any changes for TLM? I am one but just curious if anything will be changed at all? ^_^

elm street -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:54:14)

so why is a rare varium bot now less effective than an assualt bot that even f2p can get....... am i the only one seeing the bs in this? gama bots were rarely even used now because everyone is str... now we have to evole but im a tank not a str and never will be so i guess i quit for awhile.

aqwshadowking14 -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:55:39)

@Trans I know its Friday but what time.

IsaiahtheMage -> RE: =ED= Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 13:58:40)

Everything looks good except... ok when I use my Assualt Bots energy attack or special debuff ability or even if it gets blocked BOTH options go into cooldown for 4 turns? Thanks a lot complainers! [:D]

O_O
dude atleast over half of ED was 5 focus and the other half was str, support, tank,

Digital X -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 14:03:02)

I'm still 5 Focus :)

But the update on Friday might change that, might. I still have 3, 4 abilites/attacks i can use in between cool-down so it's not too bad.

elm street -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 14:03:44)

maybe its just from personal run ins but around 70percent i ran into was some sort of str build, 20were 5 focus, and rest were f2p

Drakadh -> RE: =ED= Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 14:04:39)

This thing kills my build! ( Since I use a sword xD ) But Lets see what happens

Master Volcon -> RE: =ED= Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 14:05:06)

I am not trolling or complaining I just think that things could have gone a bit differently.

-They Nerf health so you have to have low HP
-They Nerf attribute points and make it cost an insane amount of points to get any damage or defense
-They Nerf Skills to do less damage
-They Nerf Skills that have been fine since the start, such as Double strike, and make them do low damage... This completely ruins str. builds except for BH in which they can still get HP back.

-They Nerf Robots... when everyone had to turn to focus because of what they did ^^^^^^ they Nerf what people basically have to use to stay alive.

This game shall soon become a 1 build per class game unless things get better.
Everyone will use the same build because the Nerfs limit what you can do.

Buffing Static Charge was ok, but what about Blood Mage?

aqwshadowking14 -> RE: Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 14:05:57)

I reread the balance changes again and now I think Blood Mages are dead. 5 Focus is much weaker, and now Blood Mages can't spam strength because their berzerker is getting a nerf. Strength bounties are going down to because massacre is one of their main attack forces. Strength TLMs aren't getting a single nerf other than a weaker Double Strike.

Giras Wolfe -> RE: =ED= Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 14:06:18)

I might switch to CH now as a matter of principle.

Also, "small" nerf to robot? Heh, no.

Sipping Cider -> RE: =ED= Design Notes August 03, 2011 - Rebalancing the Equation (8/3/2011 14:10:29)

Well, I see myself creating a caster build.
