To be honest, I'm a little on the fence about this. There is so much you can do with photo-manipulation these days that it rarely impresses me anymore. Don't get me wrong, there are some very great manipulations out there, but very few really capture my interest. To me, photo-manipulation is just a shortcut or excuse not to put lots of effort into a great photo with well planned lighting, props, costumes or clothing, makeup, and background. A photograph with all these elements in most cases is more impressive to me. On the other hand, there are so many cliche and overused methods used for photography that just get boring and cheesy after a while. In our day and age anybody can take a photograph and just as many people can apply basic Photoshop filters or effects to those images. Very few people can actually achieve artistry with their images though, but when they do, whether it is through manipulation or careful planning, it is much more impressive and captivating. Though this may not exactly fall under the technical definition of photo-manipulation, I think that mixed traditional media added to photography is most interesting to me. Paper + scissors + tape/glue + pencils/paint + photographs = epic.
