Dialogue *In Sulen'Eska meeting room, a distraught Kara thinks on the failed peace parley as you, Melissa and Mritha try to help her.* Kara SuLema: It's happening again. It's all crashing down again. It's... Mritha: Kara, you need to rest... Kara SuLema: What I need is to make sure everyone's safe. Kara SuLema: Maybe we can head east. No, no, The Rose is sure to be blocking the roads. Kara SuLema: South? Doomwood would claim many, and Amityvale is long occupied by The Rose... <Character>: Kara, please, we're trying to help! Share your thoughts with us. Mritha: We're all in this together. Kara SuLema: I can't. Not again. Not like the Sanctuary. Kara SuLema: I can't lose you too. Melissa: If you insist on shutting us out, you're going to lose us whether you want to or not. Melissa: The peace talks were important to you, but even if they failed, we can still move forward, right? Kara SuLema: There is no moving forward. Not anymore. It's only a matter of time. Mritha: A matter of time until what? Kara SuLema: Until General Akanthus enters Betrubung at the head of an army and eliminates Sulen'eska and all who dwell here. *The Vind does not want the Rose to destroy Sulen'Eska.* Melissa: We won't let that happen! Kara SuLema: Don't be foolish. Even <Character> couldn't do anything against Akanthus. <Character>: So what are the options? You want to flee? Kara SuLema: I... I don't know. Kara SuLema: We still have refugees who call Sulen'eska home. We have folk who would rather fight and die than be uprooted once again. Kara SuLema: And even then, we have nowhere else to go. Kara SuLema: I had hoped that Jaania would have been at the parley, that I could reason with her. But Akanthus... <Character>: We had no resistance to him at the peace talks. He could have pressed his advantage. <Character>: But he didn't. He just... left. What makes you think he'd attack Sulen'eska? Kara SuLema: He... he wants the people of Greenguard on his side. Kara SuLema: By provoking us into throwing the first blow, he gains legitimacy for his actions in the eyes of the people. Kara SuLema: As much as we may have grievances with The Rose, the fact remains that they are and have been a popular movement. Kara SuLema: But a movement based on fear and hate needs targets, or people will lose faith. Melissa: He's manipulating them! Kara SuLema: The destruction of Sulen'eska would be another target, another victory. And more power consolidated under Akanthus' leadership. Kara SuLema: It happened with Popsprocket, it happened with the Sanctuary. It will happen again. Kara SuLema: And through all of this, not a single word from Jaania... <Character>: What makes you so sure she wouldn't approve of Akanthus' actions? Kara SuLema: I know her! She wouldn't. Kara SuLema: I just... I know. *Kara somnly continues to process the events.* Mritha: What if Akanthus has her locked up somewhere and took over the organization in secret? Kara SuLema: It's... a possibility. Kara SuLema: But true or not, that sort of speculation won't help us now. *Bajacu' enters the meeting room.* Bajacu': Excuse me, I hope I'm not interrupting. Bajacu': The um... guests are ready for you. Melissa: <Character> and I can handle it. Mritha, can you make sure Kara gets some sleep? <Character>: Of course. Come on, Kara. We can go over our options after you've rested. Kara SuLema: ... *On the ground, you and the Vind interrogate the captured Rose soldiers; among one of the captured soldiers is Carat.* Niki: Some of the Clawkin will be by shortly if you need anything else. Rose Soldier: Um... Thank you. Melissa: So the prisoners are ready to talk, are they? Bajacu': Took some time to convince them we weren't going to eat them. <Character>: Really? Bajacu': I wish. Carat: Wait... I know you! Carat: I remember you! Melissa: Do you recognize this one, <Character>? <Character>: Um... Carat: It's me! Carat! You and that scary elf lady let me go... <Character>: You were in the group that burned down the Clawkin settlement. Bajacu': Is that so? Carat: Er. I tried not to do any actual burning... I was horrified! I gave you that scroll, remember? Carat: I heard about the um, attack on the border prison. <Character>: Even after all that you still stuck with The Rose? Carat: You don't get it! Once you're caught up in it... everyone treats you different! You're somebody! Carat: And The Rose pays well, too! I had to take care of my family! Melissa: Money and fame over morals, was it? Rose Soldier: Stop making them mad, Carat! Carat: I swear, after the... incident... I requested a desk job! Paperwork for border passage! Carat: But when I heard about the peace parley, I just had to volunteer! <Character>: And now you're here. Carat: ...What are you going to do with me? With us? Melissa: We just have a few questions for you. Melissa: Answer truthfully, or... um... hm... <Dragon>: Or I'll fry you up and eat you for dinner! | *Menacing growl!* Melissa: Yeah! What the dragon said! Carat: I- I wasn't planning on hiding anything... Rose Soldier: We're supposed to be afraid of that tiny lizard?! *Your dragon breathes fire at the Rose Soldier.* <Dragon>: Say that again, I dare you! | *Incredulous grumble* <Dragon>: No, don't, I'm angry enough already! | *Furious growl* <Dragon>: Ooh, you better hold me back, <Character>! | *Violent, yet adorable outburst* *You carry your dragon as it continues to breath fire at the Rose Soldier.* <Character>: How about you don't antagonize the fire-breathing world destroyer of prophecy. Rose Soldier: Sorry! I'm sorry! Yes! Yep! Understood! <Dragon>: I'm watching you! | *Menacing purr* Niki: Let's start with the questions then. Niki: What is Akanthus planning? Carat: We... we don't know. Up until the fighting broke out, we thought it was just going to be peace talks. Rose Soldier: I don't think they'll be happy back in Swordhaven to hear that you attacked us. Melissa: Kara's impression of the situation seems more and more like reality. <Character>: What about Jaania? What are her plans? Rose Soldier: Lady Jaania leads The Rose to prevent the misuse of magic. Carat: It's rare that we get to see her in person, though. Niki: Perhaps she's being used as a figurehead for whatever reason? That seems odd considering her actions in the conflict against Yalla. Rose Soldier: We would never doubt a hero like her. She saved the world twice already, after all. Carat: It's true she hasn't made as many public appearances as before the war ended, but she just wants to keep everyone safe. <Character>: Safe?! Carat, you saw for yourself what The Rose did to the Clawkin! Carat: ... Niki: Do people in Swordhaven really not hear about the enslavement and oppression? Rose Soldier: I... We're told a different perspective. Carat: It's all justified. Many genuinely believe in what they're doing, others make themselves believe, for the greater cause. Melissa: So what if we brought it all to light? Showed the people of Greenguard what The Rose has been doing? Carat: No one would believe you. No one would want to believe you. Not with the successes of the Sandsea and Doomwood and beyond. Rose Soldier: Greenguard as a whole is at peace. You magic-users are stirring up trouble. <Character>: I've seen many threats pop up as if from nowhere. Do you really think the Vind are the root of all magical problems? Rose Soldier: I don't see why not. It's all magic, after all. Niki: Putting all the blame on a single name helps their cause. Melissa: As much as I hate to admit it, Kara's option of going into hiding seems more and more like the safest choice, for now. Bajacu': For the safety of all, perhaps. But the Clawkin will be hesitant to move from our lands once again. *As the Vind processes the information, Carat wonder what will happen to him and the captured Rose soldiers.* Carat: What's... what's going to happen to us now? Melissa: We can't just let them go. Carat: Can I... join you? I'll get my family, leave Swordhaven, live here with the Vind! Rose Soldier: Carat! Are you out of your mind? Rose Soldier: Although, I guess it's better than being eaten... Bajacu': We're not going to eat you! Carat: Knowing what I know... I can't go back to The Rose. It would be insufferable, being surrounded by the beliefs that I know are wrong. Carat: I'm... I'm scared. But I want to learn more about The Vind. About magic. Niki: We'll take that into consideration. *Odgne enters, scaring the Rose soldier.* Rose Soldier: I knew it! They're feeding us to the dragons! I'm sorry! I'm sorry I'm sorry! Odgne: I... What? | *Confused growl* *Mritha enters with urgent news.* Mritha: Good you're all here. Mritha: Make sure the prisoners are secure, but we have to prepare, quickly. Mritha: Odgne spotted The Rose forces mustering on the western border of the swamp. More than any previous assaults. Bajacu': Are they insane? They will lose many in Betrubung before they even manage to reach Sulen'eska! Melissa: Something tells me the well-being of the soldiers isn't a priority in Akanthus' mind. Mritha: They're still people. We can't let Akanthus use them as he sees fit! <Character>: So what's the plan? How's Kara doing? Mritha: Kara is still recovering. I'm taking command, with her blessing. Mritha: The only thing I can think of is... If we can head them off at the border. Mritha: If we can provide a big enough show of resistance, we might be able to push them back to regroup. Niki: Do we have enough resources to mount such an offense? I'm all for saving lives where we can, but we have to consider our own first. Mritha: ...I don't know. I don't. If only we had a few more dragonriders, I'm sure we'd succeed. Mritha: But at the very least, we'll be able to buy time for Kara to lead the remaining refugees out of the swamp. <Character>: What about Akanthus? If he's leading the charge, I don't know if we'd be able to stop him. Mritha: Odgne didn't see any sign of him yet. But if he does take the field, there's nothing we can do. We'd have to retreat. Bajacu': ...The Clawkin will fight. But our people grow weary of conflict. Even for their own lives. Bajacu': We are a carefree people. Being forced into causes takes its toll. Melissa: Then we'll have to give The Rose a show to remember! <Character>: What do you think, <Dragon>? Ready to fight against the odds, once again? <Dragon>: It's what we do best! | *Confident roar!* *You fight your way to the Rose camp, fighting various monsters along the way; as you leave Sulen'Eska, you listen to various conversations from other members of the Vind.* Elf Scout: The road to Falconreach is long and dangerous, especially without the company of your fellow Clawkin. Elf Scout: Take this. Some traditional elven sweets to keep your energy up. Lone Clawkin: Thank you. I understand most of my people want to stay, but my mind wanders and my legs grow restless. Lone Clawkin: Your gift is most appreciated. Elf Scout: Come on, you don't need to be so formal! I'll have to visit you when this is all over, wherever you end up! Sturdy Elf: Careful, careful! Helpful Mage: Nature magic is the essence of care, wind elf. Just hold the rope steady! Sturdy Elf: I'm sorry! I can't help but worry. These are our homes, after all. Helpful Mage: If The Rose makes it to Sulen'Eska, the extra reinforcement will do much to help. Sturdy Elf: You're right. Apologies for my impatience. Elf Guard: Oh, it's you! Heading out to the border to face The Rose, are you? Elf Guard: We'll send backup once Mritha sends word to Odgne. None of us can understand the dragon, but a roar's a roar. Elf Guard: Oh, and watch out for Tommy the Watchtog. He's guarding the other side of the bridge. Elf Guard: He can sometimes be a bit over-enthusiastic about his job. Just stun him and he'll be no trouble at all. Elf Guard: I'd help you of course, but I'm busy keeping guard. Good luck out there! Wounded Scout: Backup's here, huh? Took you long enough. Wounded Scout: The Rose have their camp just past the old border fence. Wounded Scout: With how much logging and digging they're doing, I'd guess they're planning on staying a while. Wounded Scout: I know you're the best, but be careful. There's a lot of soldiers and chained creatures. Wounded Scout: I'll be fine! Once I finish this potion, I'll head back to Sulen'Eska. If we want to keep this conflict out of the swamp, we'll have a lot of work on our hands. *Meanwhile, in Swordhaven, Jaania is transfixed by her magic mirror, attempting to view all of the possibile futures.* Jaania: There are too many possibilities. Jaania: Too many threads to follow. Jaania: But the path the mirror doesn't show... Jaania: A world without magic... Jaania: ... Jaania: No word yet from the Magi. But they're doing their best. They're doing their best. Jaania: They'll find something, I know it. Jaania: The answer is out there. *Jaania continues to be transfixed by her mirror; scene fades to black.* Complete Quest Loot for DCs - opens CW Loot for DCs shop. Other information A fairy circle acts as a healing source during the quest. Pop-up headlines during the quest: quote:
Niki: "Mritha, how was Kara when you left her? I'm worried about her state of mind." Mritha: "She was doing better, I think. Her wings are carrying so many burdens, but she's strong." Melissa: "Well, it's up to us to buy time for her to recover. But I don't know how long we'll last against an army." Mritha: "Whatever happens, the safety of the people of Sulen'Eska comes first." Melissa: "Easy there, Tommy. We don't want to hurt you..." Niki: "Doesn't look like there's any way past other than through them. Sorry." Melissa: "The swamp border's just up ahead, right? Past that elemental." A fairy circle, far from home, but just as effective! Mritha: "Hold on. We can probably sneak past that one." Melissa: "That's their camp over there! Alright. Time to make some noise!"
