Dialogue

*Somewhere, in the Swordhaven Forest, Akanthus and Bolemira are having an exchange.*

Akanthus: What is so important that you require that we meet immediately in the middle of a battlefield?
Bolemira: Smooth Talker, I am returning to Nieboheim.
Akanthus: And this concerns me... how?
Bolemira: It appears that Volkenraand has launched an assault of forbidden magicks against the Shapeless Empire.
Bolemira: A true attack. The largest in centuries.
Bolemira: Now is the perfect time for me to perhaps... ensure that certain safeguards are not in place.

*Akanthus pauses briefly before responding.*

Akanthus: So you came to brag about your ambitions.
Bolemira: As well as warn you. Should the Magesterium fall, these rifts will not be closed.
Bolemira: You, of anyone, know all too well where they lead. And what secrets they hold.
Akanthus: ...
Bolemira: No words from you of all people? I'm honored to have witnessed such an event.
Akanthus: You have wasted my time, Magester. This information does not change the path I have chosen.
Bolemira: Such ingratitude.

Bolemira: So be it.
Bolemira: Farewell, Smooth Talker. May our paths never cross.

*Bolemira turns and walks away; Akanthus reaches for his sword, but decides against it.*

Akanthus: Petty ambitions, empires, and kingdoms.

Akanthus: None of it will matter.

*Meanwhile, back in Swordhaven's lab, Amadeus is working on adjusting the unknown device Akanthus recovered previously.*

Amadeus: What is that idiot thinking, having me work on this in the lab here, in the city?
Amadeus: If I were to make a single mistake, all of Swordhaven would no longer have to worry about that Tytan's siege.
Akanthus: Then you better not make one.

*Unbeknownst to Amadeus, Akanthus is now standing behind him.*

Amadeus: I don't plan to.
Akanthus: Good.

*Amadeus glares at Akanthus.*

Amadeus: I must warn you against using this to destroy the Tytan.
Akanthus: And why do you offer this warning?
Amadeus: If I've modified this to your specifications...
Amadeus: ...the destruction and ensuing magical fallout would likely destroy Swordhaven as well, if not more.

*Akanthus displays no reaction to this revelation; this informs Amadeus that Akanthus' goals lie elsewhere.*

Amadeus: Unless you're not–

*Akanthus attacks Amadeus, destroying his illusion, revealing him to be Sepulchure to Akanthus.*

Akanthus: Curious.
Sepulchure: You would attempt to slay me over such a realization?
Sepulchure: Do you know who I am– what I have done?
Akanthus: No. Am I supposed to recognize you?

*Sepulchure is surprised by Akanthus' lack of knowledge of his reputation.*

Sepulchure: I refuse to work any further on this device.
Akanthus: Then I will tell Jaania–
Sepulchure: You don't know what you've seen.
Sepulchure: Any other person on this continent would have dropped in terror!
Sepulchure: Jaania wouldn't believe you. Nor would she care, once I've told her myself.
Akanthus: Assuming you leave this room alive.
Sepulchure: You are a fool, Akanthus.

*The standoff between Akanthus and Amadeus presumably continues, however back in Swordhaven Castle, Queen Victoria calls a meeting with Kara SuLema and the DragonLord, Magus Hansa, and yourself, as Ostromir and Vseslava join remotely.*

Queen Victoria: So, what's this plan you've come up with?
Vseslava: We don't know much about Tytans, but the conclusions, drawn by the Vind, make sense to us.
Ostromir: It is a natural being, and so, it makes sense that it is bound by natural laws.
Kara SuLema: From comparisons of physiology to creatures existing on Lore, we've determined that this Tytan is likely peaceful by nature.
Magus Hansa: It also did not start retaliating until we attacked first.
Kara SuLema: A good point.
Kara SuLema: As such, if we are able to threaten it in such a way that brings it great discomfort–
Queen Victoria: Then instead of fighting back, it will retreat through the rift!
Kara SuLema: That is our hope, yes, Your Majesty.

*Queen Victoria takes a moment to ponder this plan.*

Queen Victoria: ...I can see a lot of things going wrong with this plan.
Queen Victoria: What if this just makes it angrier?
Queen Victoria: What if it flees further away from the rift rather than back into it?
Queen Victoria: Can it... even fly backwards?
Kara SuLema: That is where <Character> comes in.
Magus Hansa: As we saw when the ballistae were fired, it simply floated out of reach before retaliating.
Magus Hansa: If we were to apply a threat to its front, then it will most likely retreat from that threat.
<Character>: So, I'll get up to its head, try not to melt, and just start attacking it until it backs up through the rift!
<Character>: I've been working on thinking about staying solid, and not liquifying.
Queen Victoria: <Character>, I'm... I'm not sure that it's that simple...
Kara SuLema: Don't worry, we have a solution for that!
Magus Hansa: With some of the research The Rose has developed regarding magical creatures–

*Kara SuLema briefly glares at Magus Hansa, as their definition of "research" is very different.*

Magus Hansa: As well as some... creativity from the Vind, we believe that if we can secure a part or a piece of the Tytan–
Kara SuLema: We'll be able to develop a spell to protect <Character>!
Queen Victoria: I see! And with the ballistae that hit it then fell, there's sure to be some Tytan bits out on the battlefield!
Queen Victoria: How are you faring, Golden Hand?
Vseslava: Ostromir has almost finished wresting back control.
Ostromir: We should be ready when you are.
Vseslava: There was a minor... distraction... from back home, but nothing to worry about.
Queen Victoria: Wonderful. This plan still seems... optimistic though. If the Tytan doesn't retreat, or it redoubles its attack...
Queen Victoria: We must trust that Jaania's barrier will hold, should even the worst occur.

*Queen Victoria ponders the plan some more, factoring in all of the new information.*

Queen Victoria: It is decided. We have incomplete information, and we cannot predict the future, but with what we have, this is our best course of action.
Queen Victoria: We proceed with this plan.
Queen Victoria: However, we must not let our guards down. We will continue planning for even the unexpected.
Queen Victoria: <Character>, it's up to you to find some remains of the Tytan.
<Character>: At once, Your Majesty!

*You fight your way through the Swordhaven Forest, battling various elementals, until you find a chunk of the Tytan.*

<Character>: This must be it! Now, to fit it in my backpack...

*Meanwhile, Jaania is transfixed by her magic mirror, attempting to view all of the possible timelines and avoid any avoidable errors; she hears a knock at her door.*

Jaania: I asked not to be interrupted!
???: Lady Jaania, there's been an incident. Spymaster Amadeus has been captured by unknown assailants.
Jaania: They infiltrated the tower and no one stopped them?
???: There were a few casualties, and General Akanthus was wounded, but the kidnappers managed to get away.
Jaania: So many possibilities... but which ones are true?

*Jaania neglects to answer whoever is at her door.*

???: ...Lady Jaania?
Jaania: I cannot be sidetracked by these distractions. Have General Akanthus pursue the attackers.
Jaania: And increase the guard. The magical defenses are still intact, so whoever took Amadeus must have entered the tower normally.
???: As you command.

*Jaania returns her full attention to the mirror, although she has yet to take her eyes off of it.*

Jaania: More and more choices, more and more branches...
Jaania: Every choice, every moment. There must be a solution.
