Choose a Faction

The Rose, the Vind, and The Magesterium's Golden Hand each have their own missions, but there is only one of you, hero. Choose a faction to aid in the conflicts to come. Note that this decision cannot be changed until the conclusion of the Proclamations.

  • OK

  • Rose Faction - Magus Hansa and Jaania

Magus Hansa: <Character> approaches us, Lady Jaania. Have you come to assist us in the defense of the people of Greenguard?

Magus Hansa: You're surprised to see me here, <Character>! I can tell!
Magus Hansa: Well, with the magnified threat of the rifts, Lady Jaania has asked me to return to lead the Rose's defense of the citizens of Greenguard.
Jaania: Unfortunately, my own tasks necessitate my full attention. It was with the greatest regret that I asked this of you, my dear Hansa.
Magus Hansa: Even if you had not, I could not stand by, idle, while the people of Greenguard suffer.
Magus Hansa: But <Character>, we could really use your help. The Rose forces are spread thin across Greenguard, holding off the invasion as best they can.
Magus Hansa: I can personally attest to your prowess in the defense of innocents. The Rose could certainly use your help here.
Jaania: Do decide quickly, <Character>. My research beckons.
    Magus Hansa: Lady Jaania.
Magus Hansa: Your relationship with <Character> may be strained, but you must be respectful.
    Jaania: Hmph.
Magus Hansa: Worry not, <Character>. You'd be reporting to me, not Jaania, in the coming storm.
Magus Hansa: Think about it, okay?

Golden Hand Faction - Ostromir and Vseslava

Ostromir: <Character>! Come to join us? The Queen lent us some of her knights, but we could use all the help we can get!

Ostromir: Our mission is to head deep into invasion territory.
Vseslava: At the base of the rift, there is a trio of foci that can be used to adjust the rift's potency.
Ostromir: Luckily, we should only have to reach one of them. They're connected, you see.
Vseslava: However, our own magical abilities are limited without ignominious present.
Ostromir: The Queen Victoria has lent us a number of her knights to escort us, but...
Ostromir: Well. You've seen the glory of Nieboheim and her people. These knights are certainly no heroes, am I right?
Ostromir: And I'm sure with your assistance, it will be as simple as a walk to the Forums!
Vseslava: Leaves us time to perhaps get to know each other better.
Vseslava: Give it some thought, yes?

Vind Faction - Kara SuLema and DragonLord

Kara SuLema: <Character>, Queen Victoria has tasked the Vind with the defense of the front lines. It will be... difficult.

  • Join!
    quote:

    Help the Vind!

Are you sure you want to join the Vind on the front lines? This decision cannot be changed until after the conclusion of the Proclamation.

  • Yes - joins the Vind Faction, teleports you to The Greenguard Alliance - Vind Faction.

Kara SuLema: The Vind and our allies will be the first line of defense against the rift elementals. It is a dangerous assignment.
Kara SuLema: The Atealans may still be recovering, but they have sent as many soldiers as they can spare to aid us as well.
Kara SuLema: We must hold off as many of the invaders as possible to give the Rose and the Golden Hand time. It is not an enviable task.
Kara SuLema: However, with your assistance, I am certain a lot of us would feel much more at ease.
    Kara SuLema: ...
Kara SuLema: My apologies, <Character>, I... have a lot on my mind.
Kara SuLema: Please, consider lending us your strength.

  • Reset Progress - appears only after completion of Awakened Depths: Epilogue (All Versions).
    quote:

    Reset Quest Progress

Are you sure you want to reset quest progress of the Greenguard Alliance, The Royal Resistance, and The Awakened Depths? This cannot be undone, and will require you to join a faction and replay the quests in order.

  • Yes - resets player's progress from The Rose Defense: Swordhaven / Golden Hand Escort: Swordhaven / The Vind Defense: Swordhaven to Awakened Depths: Epilogue (All Versions).
  • No

  • If you attempt to leave without choosing a faction:
    quote:

    Game Over

You decided that the decision of who to help was too difficult, and so, you fled and decided to go fishing instead. Generations later, the only survivors of the harsh and twisted land of Lore would tell tales of a lone dragon, forever searching the wastelands for their friend, who had the power to prevent the calamity, but caught a rather tasty trout instead.

  • Stay
  • Leave - returns to Swordhaven (Book 3).

  • Other information
  • This zone is temporarily inaccessible after initial faction selection; faction can NOT be changed until completion of the Awakened Depths: Epilogue (All Versions), as stated in the November 15th, 2019 Design Notes.
  • Faction selection also impacts The Royal Resistance and The Awakened Depths quest sagas, including Awakened Depths: Epilogue (All Versions).
  • The Reset Progress option was added on November 18th, 2022.

Konnan, Swordhaven Citizens, and Rose Soldiers

    Konnan: <Character>.
    <Character>: Are you leaving, Konnan?
Konnan: Yes. While Swordhaven is the focus of the war effort now, the Deadlands and other areas will struggle.
Konnan: I won't fight, but if my weapons can support those who can...
Konnan: Well, it will be something.

Woman: Thank you, <Character>! Those elementals would have been the end of us if it weren't for you.
Man: It's a shame about the house but...
Woman: Oh hush, we should be grateful for our lives!
Man: I am, I am! I just wish the Rose would hurry up and fix this.
Man: I do feel safer, I do. But the world could always be a bit more safer, you know?
Woman: If only. Maybe I should sign up to join the Rose.
Man: Oh, I couldn't let you do that—

    Man: I—
Woman: Well, you're not going to defend yourself, are you?
    Man: ...
    Woman: ...

    Energizer: Shh, is that <Character>?
Manahunter: It is! Didn't s/he beat up your platoon a few months ago?
Energizer: Ugh, I still have nightmares.
Energizer: At least s/he is on our side this time.
Manahunter: For now. I heard s/he works for the Vind!
Energizer: Yeah but aren't we working with them too now?
    Manahunter: For now.

    Grandiflora and Grand Magus Hansa

Grandiflora: Oh, hello <Character>! Sorry, I hadn't seen you there...
<Character>: Grandi— I mean, Commander Grandiflora! How are things shaping up?
Grandiflora: Frenetic... It's an organized chaos progressively setting itself up.
Grandiflora: It's both very stressful and very exhilarating all at once...
Grandiflora: But now that I see that you'll be here while we take everything that gets past the Vind...
Grandiflora: ...I am reassured. Thanks for coming to our aid, <Character>.
<Character>: Glad to be here! Can't say I would want to imagine what would happen if those Elementals went and flattened the entire region...
Grandiflora: I have the same feeling.
Grandiflora: Sorry... I'd chat more, but I should really be getting back to focusing on leading the troops for now.
Grandiflora: I hope you won't hold it against me if I cut things short?
    <Character>: Not at all.
Grandiflora: Then take care of yourself, <Character>.
Grandiflora: When this is all over... I'd like to think we'll all be raising a cup or a mug with the troops to a successful campaign.
Grandiflora: It'll be hard to do that if both your arms are in splinters. Stay safe!
<Character>: Thanks. Same to you, Commander.

    G. M. Hansa: Ah, <Character>. Glad you could join us. As you can see, we are all set to assist the people of Swordhaven.
    G. M. Hansa: Unfortunately, as expected, it appears that a good number of elementals have made it through the Vind defenses...
    G. M. Hansa: ...so it's up to us to ensure the safety of the city.
    G. M. Hansa: Now I...
    G. M. Hansa: <Character>, I sense... unease from you. What is on your mind?
<Character>: I'm not sure I agree with Jaania holing herself up in her research when she could be out here fighting the elementals with us.
<Character>: I know she's a powerful mage. She turned me into a hero-sicle! She fought off two magesters at the Gala!
<Character>: So why isn't she helping to protect Swordhaven?
    G. M. Hansa: ...
    G. M. Hansa: It should not be my place to speak of this, but since Jaania herself is unlikely to disclose this to you...
    G. M. Hansa: ...
    G. M. Hansa: Jaania is afraid of her magic, <Character>.
    G. M. Hansa: Not in that she believes she cannot use it at all...
    G. M. Hansa: ...but that should she unleash her full potential, she would lose herself, and do more damage than good.
<Character>: Is she afraid that she can't control herself?
    G. M. Hansa: That may be part of it. While you were frozen, there was an... incident.
    G. M. Hansa: A disaster, more like.
    G. M. Hansa: That would perhaps be a tale to continue another time, though.
    G. M. Hansa: We have a city to defend!
<Character>: Very well. But you will continue this later, Commander Hansa?
    G. M. Hansa: Of course, <Character>.

    Swordhaven Knights

Unsure Knight: My family is still in the city, and I'm out here, risking my life for some... foreign weirdos?
Bitter Knight: I know what you mean.
Bitter Knight: They're going on about 'Shapeless this, Shapeless that,' and 'What do you mean there's no murshrom brew?'
Unsure Knight: Queen Victoria trusts them, but she's...
Bitter Knight: She's our Queen, and I trust her completely. But she's...
    Unsure Knight: She's not Alteon.
Bitter Knight: At least Lady Jaania is working on a solution too.
Unsure Knight: Oh, uh, hey, <Character>.

Nervous Knight: What are they going to do when we get there?
Serious Knight: Apparently they're going to make all the elementals go away or something.
Nervous Knight: Yeah, but how? What if they sacrifice us to their Shapeless? Oh by the Avatars...
Serious Knight: Don't be silly. <Character>'s here. I'm sure s/he will defend us if it comes down to it.
    Nervous Knight: Right... right...
Nervous Knight: Hey, <Character>, you'll protect us, won't you?
Serious Knight: Get ahold of yourself! You're a knight of Swordhaven!
    Nervous Knight: Yessir!

    Vseslava and Ostromir

Ostromir: And here is <Character>! Didn't get lost on the way out here, I see! A true hero!
<Character>: Hi Ostromir, Vseslava. About that hero stuff—
Vseslava: Don't worry, <Character>, we know all about your secret identity!
<Character>: Secret? Um, all I did was sign a piece of paper—
Vseslava: Did you get the pierogi discount?
    <Character>: I—
<Character>: You do both realize we're at war here, right?
Ostromir: War? Ha! We've seen war, <Character>.
Ostromir: Maybe that's what the Vind and Rose are doing, but what we are doing...
    Ostromir: This is maintenance.
Vseslava: We're glad you decided to join us, <Character>. It's good to have an, albeit tenuous, connection to home in these foreign lands.
<Character>: About that. Who exactly are you? You said you were sent by the Magesterium...
Vseslava: Ah. We are technically magesters.
    Ostromir: Technically!
<Character>: Wait, does that mean you were there when my dragon came out and there was a vote and—
Vseslava: Oh yes. We were there. Well, I was. I believe Ostromir was out on a mission.
Ostromir: A very important mission! We had these new golems, you see, and there were some adjustments that—
Vseslava: Anyway, while we are technically Magesters, we are deployed by the Shapeless when there are... unpredictable matters to attend to.
Vseslava: As such, among the Magesterium, we are equals, but not equals.
    <Character>: Wait what?
Ostromir: It's like... The Shapeless can tell us where to go and what to do, right? And we have to do it.
Ostromir: But we also get the opportunity to see so much more of the world.
Ostromir: And so the Shapeless affords us certain liberties that other Magesters do not have.
Ostromir: Our votes in the Magesterium count the same in the eyes of the Shapeless, but perhaps we aren't always around to vote.
    Vseslava: It balances out.
    <Character>: That sounds... complicated.
Vseslava: Faith in the Shapeless and obedience in its decree make it quite simple, really.
Vseslava: Anyway, I believe we have a job to do?
Vseslava: These 'Knights' seem capable enough, but with our limited access to magic, it's good that you're here as well.
<Character>: I have some more questions...
Ostromir: Later, perhaps, hero <Character>. We must prepare!

    Wind Elves and Alz'ein

Concerned Scout: I'm not sure how I feel about this.
Anxious Troup: I know what you mean. Working with the Rose? What if they betray us?
Concerned Scout: Exactly! Here we are, on the front lines, taking the brunt of the attack. What if they're just waiting for us to be weakened then— bam!
    Anxious Troup: Backstabbed?
    Concerned Scout: Backstabbed.
Concerned Scout: Oh uh, hey, <Character>.
    Anxious Troup: Don't mind us.

Alz'ein: Jatiw, <Character>! Once more we battle alongside each other!
    <Character>: It's good to see you, Alz'ein.
Alz'ein: And you as well. Atrea may still be recovering, but the Riftwalkers are never ones to shy away from a good battle.
Alz'ein: And here we are, at the aid of the Vind, just as you recently came to ours.
<Character>: Is that okay? If your people are still recovering then perhaps it would have been best to—
Alz'ein: Nonsense! Atealans are a hardy people, and we've seen what these rifts can do.
Alz'ein: We can't let them go unchecked, or there will be nothing left to recover, in the end.
Alz'ein: But enough talk. I'm itching for a fight!

    Melissa and Kara SuLema

    Melissa: Hey, <Character>!
<Character>: How are you holding up, Melissa?
    Melissa: Well enough, well enough.
Melissa: I'm just glad that with my return to Swordhaven, I don't have to wear that awful dress!
<Character>: If only it were under more peaceful conditions.
    Melissa: Agreed!
<Character>: Where are Mritha and Niki and the others? I'd have thought they would be around.
Melissa: They're out leading some expeditionary forces currently. Speaking of which, I must get back to preparations.
Melissa: It was good to see you!
    <Character>: You as well!

    Kara SuLema: Hm?
<Character>: How are you doing, Kara?
Kara SuLema: Oh, sorry, <Character>, I didn't notice you there.
Kara SuLema: I've just been so worried about Jaania. I don't...
    Kara SuLema: I...
    <Character>: Is everything alright?
Kara SuLema: I don't think I ever told you how the Vind came to be, have I?
    <Character>: No, never.
Kara SuLema: No. You were simply thrust into the heart of our conflict against the Rose with little to no explanation as to who we were.
Kara SuLema: And for that I apologize.
<Character>: It's okay, really. I like helping out where I can. And the Vind seemed like a good cause to follow.
<Character>: It was my own choice.
Kara SuLema: That's heartening to hear, <Character>. While we have some time, would you care to listen to our story?
    <Character>: Sure. I don't see why not.
Kara SuLema: After you were frozen... Jaania was distraught.
Kara SuLema: She had been locked away, helpless, watching, but unable to act, for so long, and now that she was free, she was going to make a difference.
Kara SuLema: For a time, she traveled Greenguard, doing good deeds, trying to mend the damage done by countless generations of war.
Kara SuLema: But it was not enough.
Kara SuLema: Always, always there was more suffering, more pain for her to encounter.
<Character>: If she needed help, she could have unfrozen me! I would have been glad to assist.
Kara SuLema: Perhaps. But it seems that she was always wary of you.
Kara SuLema: It is undeniable that multiple Lore-changing events have revolved around you and <Dragon>.
Kara SuLema: Perhaps she thought that keeping you out of the way would have curtailed any malicious forces.
    <Character>: That's crazy! She'd blame me for—
Kara SuLema: That's just my own guess. And to many, it made sense.
Kara SuLema: Here was Greenguard, recovering in a time of peace, and at the helm of this peace was Jaania.
Kara SuLema: But the peace was not to last.
Kara SuLema: My apologies, <Character>, but maybe we should continue this later. Swordhaven isn't going to defend itself, after all.
<Character>: What? You're going to stop there? What happened?
Kara SuLema: Another time, <Character>. Another time.
